Over 50,000 people agree. Fuzzy Wednesday’s is the spot to relax, relate, and release every aspect of their creative beings. As Virginia’s longest running open mic, Fuzzy Wednesday’s proves that it is not just another trendy “throw-away”. It has become the essence of artistic expression in the Hampton Roads area. Participants travel from as far Florida, Washington DC, and California for the rare opportunity to perform their music, poetry, comedy, and other forms of art.

Fuzzy Wednesday’s was created in 1997 as the long awaited answer to a complex problem; the absence of available venues through which one could channel their creative energies. The answer was birthed from the minds of two; Duane Smith and Paul Saunders.

As graduates of the famed LaGuardia High School of the Arts in New York, they were well aware of the challenge that lay ahead of them. It began small; a restaurant, a mic, a few patrons, and the foundation of what would soon become The Fuzz Band.

Growing rapidly, the venue has been forced to relocate several times over the years to accommodate its huge public response. Word has definitely traveled in large circles.

Fuzzy Wednesday’s and its feature band, The Fuzz Band, have been influential in the reintroduction of live music into the urban culture of Virginia. As a result they have played host to a multitude of locals, travelers, and celebrities alike who desired to be a part of this revolution. Some of those who have graced the “fuzzy” stage are Jill Scott, Eric Roberson, The Foreign Exchange, Jaspects, Bilal, Nottz, DMP, Dead Prez, Weldon Irvine, Jaguar Wright, Faith Evans, Sy Smith, Mike Phillips, Winans Phase II, and Blue Cantrell.

One can only imagine how this open mic has maintained, evolved, and increased its presence in an era which hasn’t been kind to the concept of live music. There are many possible responses, but my guess would be that people are not as simplistic and naive as this business would have you to believe. They don’t just want to sing along, be entertained, go to a concert, or enjoy a meal. They want it all. They want to participate and be involved. They want an experience; the “fuzzy experience”.

Described by some as a simultaneous overflow of emotion; defined by all as unforgettable.

Who knows what you will get…on any given Wednesday
