Ann Arbor, Michigan (August 30, 2011): On Saturday, September 17th, the best established and up-and-coming afro-rock musicians in Southeastern Michigan converge at the James L. Crawford Elks Lodge, located at 220 Sunset Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan for the Cosmic Slop Music Festival. More than a dozen bands showcase the diversity of Michigan’s rock music scene. Bands will perform from 1pm to 2am. Admission for the All Ages event costs $5.00.
Drawing its name from Funkadelic’s classic 1973 album Cosmic Slop, the festival celebrates Michigan’s legacy of progressive, minority-led rock bands that began with bands like Death, Black Merda, Funkadelic, and Enemy Squad, and continues to this day. Cosmic Slop is organized by a multi-cultural group of rock musicians and entertainment industry professionals from the Metro Detroit area who hope to shine the spotlight on an often under-represented segment of the Michigan rock scene.
The festival was the brainchild of singer/songwriter Deekah Wyatt, leader of Detroit rockers The Spiral Effect. “I looked around at all the talented minority rock bands I was a fan of from the area,” she explains. “It made me wonder, ‘Why don’t we have a festival?’ So here we are; coming together to show the world we’re here and we’re ready to rock!”
The lineup includes performances by Nadir, FluxPhonic, NuRokSol, Cody Stagefright, The Spiral Effect, Blackmail, Eprom Colony, Ren Cen Coolbeanz, Duane the Teenage Weirdo, and many more. In addition to a large outdoor stage, there will be several performance spaces featuring intimate musical happenings, poetry, film screenings, and art exhibits.
