... the other Black experience

I was wondering what kind of hair dye do you all use? The girl that does my hair uses jazzing and I like it alright, but the color isn't as bright as I'd want. I love the jet grape color. I have a relaxer in my hair so I can't bleach, right?
I've checked out manic panic, but I don't know how it would react on my hair. Does anyone have and advice?

I've tried henna ( a plant with dye) and after that no artificial dye matches up.

I used to use Special Effects Wildflower.
i've been wanting to dye my hair for so long now! i bought 'jazzing' in ebony, but i haven't tried it yet. how do you like the product; it doesn't burn, does it? i like manic panic, but i have to let it sit on my hair forever to get the color to seep in. if you're thinking of bleaching + dyeing, PLEASE get help doing it (professional help is the best kind). i bleached + dyed my hair using manic panic products, it was a disaster! the bleaching was ok, but the purple i was going for didn't set in right, and i came out looking like a pink/orange sesame street monster...

please don't bleach + dye alone, your hair (and anyone looking at you) will thank you.
I've never tried to dye my hair myself, but jazzing is good. I've never had any bad burning with it. Only if you use a red it with bleed on pillows.
Here's a chart of jazzing colors. I think it's pretty accurate. I never bleached, but I lighted with hydrogen peroxide and makes good highlights.

jazz is good, but i'm more of a fan of manic panic or special effects since i like wild colors. but definitealy only use these with a professional.
Do they still make Manic Panic? How COOL! I remember doing that when I was 19 and I wanted blue hair. Unfortunately, I was too stupid to realize I was supposed to lighten my dark brown hair FIRST. So I ended up with burgundy color hair in the summer. It was pretty. ;)

http://www.hennaking.com has a lot of neat colours. They sell the stuff for hair as well as the lip and eye stain products.

As far as coloring your hair if it's relaxed, according to my friend the hairdresser, who is really experienced with color, she told me if you have just relaxed your hair (even if it's just a touch up), you should wait 7 days before coloring your hair, especially if it's the permanent dye. Just to be careful.

The semi permanent stuff called Cellophane is nice, more subtle than drastic, but it was really good with my hair back when I was still relaxing it. And it washed out after about 10-12 washes, which was good for me then, because I tend to change my mind about my hair a couple times during the year (I like variety usually).

Which is completely insane, now that I just cut my hair short. I'm taking it easy for awhile.
how do you get your hair color to get so bright and stay in?? I've tried to dye my hair twice and it always washed out! I used Jazzing once and some other brand another time..I even left one in overnight and it still washed out. I'd like to dye a few of my dreadlocks once they lock more.
As far as hennaking goes; i don't really trust any henna that advertises coming in different colors; sounds like it might be synthetic so be careful.
Big Word to Hell Cat.
Henna with any other additives is unpredictable, but especially when metallic salts are added. When applied to hair that has been chemically processed, for instance with relaxers/colors and the like, the hair shaft can literally break down and melt away or be totally trashed beyond repair. I'm not talking about a bad color, I'm talking about you being bald as a bean! The only henna to use on your hair is 100% pure henna, no synthetic or "botanical" ingredients added! The fresher and finer the better. Try ordering some BAQ (Body Art Quality) in bulk from a reputable site.
Oh, it's an extremely safe bet that henna that deposits any other color than red on your hair is compound (bad) henna. The real deal is only going to do condition and add red to your natural color. Think your natural hair after being out in the sun for a week. Very pretty, but sometimes very subtle on some people. Still, it's worth it for the conditioning alone!
Try this site for info, it's the only place I order my powders from. http://www.hennaforhair.com/

I hope all that helps! Good luck!!
Nice, ST that's the same site I use *high five*
I've been using it in a yogurt/conditioner gloss for conditioning only but now I think I want to do it for color since I see they have it henna with a finer sift.
You can bleach, actually, but be very, very, very careful. Definitely do not bleach on your own. Make sure your stylist knows what the hell he or she is doing------have them use a strong leave-in conditioner and nourishing shampoo after they bleach. Anyway, I used L'Oreal Color Pulse mousse while they still made it because it was water based and gentler than most dyes. Now I use Herbal Essences, which features aloe and a lot of deep conditioners.
The ONLY way you're going to get what you want is to bleach. I just bleached my hair to dye it red after dying it once and the color only showing in the sun.
That some good information, ST. That site too is interesting. Starla, yes I too have a few gray hairs already. I suppose the certified good quality made for hair use henna is a good idea for that. But frankly, I just don't give a shit about the few gray hairs I see on my head. Funny, I always think it's dust until I look for it real close and realize it's hair that's shiny gray.

Ladies Who Henna, I have a question. I remember trying henna about 15 or 20 years ago, back when I was straightening by chemical relaxers.

Now that' I've been natural for 7 years: do you know the effect on natural hair versus straightened hair?
I remember my hair felt a bit strange when it was chemically relaxed, and I want to know how henna-ing your NATURAL hair feels once your hair has dried. I'm curious.
