Rap? U find that shit in the gift shop(jk, just wanted to quote Andre 3000)

These are the HIP-HOP records I've listened to in the the past week:

Ghostface Killah-Bulletproof Wallets("niggas gon fuck around and get they ballon popped!"-I love his stream of consciousness rants, so funny)
Lupe Fiasco-Food & Liquor
Lupe Fiasco-The Cool
U-God-Golden Arms Redemption(save for 1 or 2 songs I reminded myself of why I hadn't listened to it in so long. Dude definately can't carry a whole album, He's good with his 16's on Wu trax-most of the time)
Meth and Red- Blackout 2

The Roots and Q-tip are lined up next.

I think I might go on a CoFlow/Def Jux binge in a minute..
i really like old LL Cool J ... that guy is a true poet! i like hip hop not rap...as those two are totally different imo.
for sure.
hip hop is not just a music genre, its a lifestyle.

In the UK most decent black people have become so disorientated with the whole 'rap culture' thing, that over here is about Grime and kinda endorses murder, drugs etc so have completely moved to the indie/nu rave scene.
Its so typical for us to destroy something we have created.

it's typical of any movement.

i HATE drake. he has these sprite commercials at the movie theater...that turned my bleah indifference and occasional moments of laughing at him as the guy from Degrassi into a firm dislike of this guy and the commercial machine behind such fakery. but no one will ever top Kanye West. ...no, not even Lil Jon or Lil Wayne or whoever.
i disagree.
normally movements are destroyed by something else, theyr not so self destructive.
AGREED about kanye though.
its refreshing to see/hear someone with an educated basis for their music.
x♥

it seems like no one appreciates anything from the period of hip hop's birth anymore. these youngin's praise young jeezy and drake but cannot stomache epmd or big daddy kane it's like....wow. i think a lot of urban youth dispose their history the minute it gets a few months old pretty sad.
Rakim had a performance in nyc recently not one black face it's SAD !!!
K-os from my town absolutley one of my fav emcees/musicians...

I like the idea of Rap but even some of the underground artists ( Like Talib) engage in the boasting and ego centric games of the mainstream and of yesteryear. Right now I'm listening to K-os: a guy who has production and instrumentals on his track to rival anybody. I also like Bus Driver and Cadence Weapon. I want to start getting into the cool stuff coming out of Minnesota.
Actully, I sorta think Hip Hop being legitimized as a "culture" is where rap went wrong. As soon as that happened, sometime in the early 90's, is when marketing departments and Mtv figured out you could sell hip hop "culture", ie baggy pants and dance moves, without having rappers that could actually rap. It's the difference between "Yo! Mtv Raps" and "Mtv Jams".

"Culture" is a trap, the ultimate marketing tool. I'd rather just listen to good music and nevermind the pigeon holes.
There are some really creative people doing hip hop out there though, I just picked this up today, another Madlib masterpiece, love this guy--

Jackson Conti, Sujinho
