!!! AGAINST THE GRAIN: POST YOUR UNPOPULAR OPINIONS !!!

It's BACK!

An all time great thread from the AP 1.0 foundation.

Massive props goes to the originator Onomatrix who brought us this powerful forum, inspired by by a forum on Playahata.com (if I'm correct). Ono, get on here and set it off with your unique perspective.

Objective: express the opinions that would normally get your run out of town if vocalized or presented. Example:

= Obama is not the best candidate but he's all we've got

= Black folks are our own worst enemy

= Women are too emotional

= Men are too emotionless

= Censorship is a good idea

= All women with perms hate their natural selves

= All men with dreads date white women

= Folks under 30 don't know anything about good music

= Chocolate owns vanilla

= J-Dilla couldn't touch Premeir, Large Pro, Pete Rock or Dre

...and so on (disclaimer: all the above examples do NOT represent my personal views, one or two maybe...).

This is not a place for full on debate & violent conflict, but please be free in how you express. And keep the page long flame-wars to private messages and off the boards.

Ready? Let's go!

XDDM,

Please post a link to that full comic if possible.

Part of that whole thing is something I have seen and heard on this site and elsewhere. I think it boils down to "I don't want to be mistaken for 'that type' of Black person." I hear people from other ethnic groups express the same thing with different words often. I think if you are worried about being mistaken, there's a good chance that you really are, but you could still be a great human being. Conversely, there are plenty of people who have a cache of whatever the "cool" thing is this week, but are horrible people.

I straight snatched those images from our God of Gods of the internet, Holy Google (praise be upon him ha).   I saw the comic panels & thought the same, 'where did these comes from?'  so I'll start digging.

To an extent I see what some punk fans might feel of not wanting to be mistaken for the trendy 'hipster' who's dipping into their steelo but if you're real about your culture you know you only have to wait a sec.  The winds will change and all the 'hip' folks willbe  on to something else because that's what being 'hip' is.  Whether it's rappers incorporating punk/rock styles or vice-versa.

Though I think I saw another corny smug anti-rap tee on the AP mainpage, I'll check in later...

^^^ have to add on: the drawing of ex-singer & infamous Sugar Hill records co-founder Sylvia Robinson.

The artist captured all beauty, glamour, style, shrewdness, savvy, scheming and capitalist hustle that Sylvia had a notorious reputation for.  Along with her co-founder husand Joe Robinson (also ghostly drawn) they set off the recording careers of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, Sugarhill Gang, Spoonie Gee, & even Naughty By Nature (then known as the New Style).  The artwork gives an impressive veiw of the people & stories.

XDoo, that is nice artwork!  I like that it's telling some story of hip hop up there.

Dope right?   And getting back subject, still in my unpopular opinion that "hip hop, punk wants it's style back" blah blah blah is some whiny corny hipster-ass rubbish.  I don't hate them for it but I simply disagree & think some folks don't understand the close paralell relationship punk rock & Hip Hop have stylisticly as well as culturally.

=  Calling yourself "Black Barbie" is, again in my cliched terminology, corny.   Barbie is enough of an unrealistic & dangerous ideal and standard for white women;  adopting the title of a Black version is downright self-esteem suicide.

Black people who talk shit about white people adopting black kids need to STFU!!! At least the whites are doing it. Black adoption rates are well below what they could or should be.

Black people need to stop always voting Democrat. Them cats are about to sell your asses up the river. You have the option to vote Libertarian or Green too. The Republican party not so much. Why do you think you are still doing worse than anybody else after these last 4 years? You are taken for granted.

- White peoples constant bombardment of negative stereotypes of black woman in the media.

-Some black males acting as if white woman are a prize and somehow better then black woman.

-The lack of education when it comes to the origins of our people.

-The fact light and dark skinned people are treated and talked about like there two different races.

-The fact that being "mixed" or "light skinned" seems to in societies eyes make a person more attractive, and the negative affect it has on us as a people.

Folks in Harlem who are mad about the "Harlem Shake" meme need to lighten the fuck up. Shit's gonna pass through like fast food in like a month. Stop being so goddamn sensitive!!!

^^^ I see both sides.  Yeah Harlemites need to chill a bit.  At the same time they should take advantage of it.

Dame Dash said said that Harlem being the center of NYC makes it powerful.  Folks from there should understand that and know that people will always take something and run with it, "Manhattan always makin' it...".  Folks from the area need to do their own video off an original beat or off the pop hit by Baauer showing how the old Puffy, G-Dep video "Let's Get It" style was done back in the early 2000's by the youth.

Black & Latino Harlem needs to know that what they do moves the world & not just be proud but take inventory & ca$h in because others will.  Remember that this formerly Dutch area (swindled from Native Americans) is constantly changing and white folks are already snatching back the blocks they left to decay in the 60's-90's as absentee slumlords back when Harlem was known as "the place white white folks don't go", across 110th street.

I say entrepenuers of color in Harlem needs to snatch that white tourist dollar in a New York second.  Shake their asses down legally like Guy Fisher & PeeWee Kirkland did in the illegal game.

Make that money, take that money...now let's get it!

Brie Nicole Holt, I posted something about colorism on FB last week concerning how on VH-1's popular reality series Love & Hip Hop it showed an image of almost exclusively lightskinned Latinas as the girlfriends, boos, etc. of the Black male leads on the show.  As screwed up an image this is, I have some unpop ops about it:

=  I ain't mad at lightskinned/Latina women taking advantage of these industry cats superfical tastes.  Of course there's nothing wrong with personal preferences but we know the deal here.  If these sisters are using the industry cats fetishism about 'light, exotic' fearues to get ahead in the music business or life, so be it.  Respectfully, I guess everybody's getting what they so desire.  Go Amber, go Kim K.  It takes two to trick.

=  I'd love to see more gorgeous dark skinned women on L&HH like businesswoman Yandy and in videos.  But I'm not about tokenism and Im' not sure if this exploitation is good for anybody.

=  I'm glad a show like Washington Heights shows a more balanced view of the young Latino community in NYC where they deal with family challenges, relationships, art, sports, music, friendship bonds, business, etc.

=  The corny superficalness of 'reality TV' like L&HH hopefully will teach some folks how not to act.  Though unfortunately some will see a playbook on how to act....

=  If 'reality TV' is a popular genre of media that shapes ideals & perspectives, then it must be used to influence the public in the more positive, cultural, abundant path.  Sexy, more balanced, less color biased, intriguing reality shows should be promoted for the pop cultural audience.
