AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

well i went. Though it wasn't exactly what i expected, it was cool. The event, which i didnt do my research on kind of catch me off guard. I didn't expect it was going to be a skate boarding festival for that day. It basically had a lot of kids there at start skate boarding, then later some older people skate boarding as well.

The atmosphere was pretty nice. I was expecting a little more, but wasn't disappointed. its safe to say you definitely have to be picky and choosy on which event you go to, since it seems like curtain schedule fit curtain groups of people. With that being said, some of the skaters... well, i should say majority of the skaters were terrible. Mind you, it was basically a public open skating event, so none were professionals.

oh yeah, the live band they had.. ugh. they seem as if they were going to rock heavily but didn't. ok, they did sing a good song or two, but it was like a long quiet pause between the songs, and i mean long. It was a bit amateurish, didn't keep things flowing faced enough for someone like me. I could have sworn there were two separate band, but ah well.

I went to the show on Saturday, and the only thing I was disappointed with was the listless crowd - only a handful of people really got into it. And some girl standing in front of me, who was stone-faced the entire show, had the nerve to give me a dirty look for singing along to a song. BULLSHIT, MR. HAN MAN!
Come out to the Festival tomorrow (Tuesday,8th). The lineup promises to be one big "throw down"! I will be hanging out with a few friends who are also coming...so maybe I will see you in the PIT!!!! :)
I probably won't make any of the concerts again til Saturday, which is a can't miss. The Noisettes and Dirtbombs are so, so gonna own it.
Monday was worse, all rappers, no rock groups at all.

I felt let down, almost betrayed. Not that there isn't a place for rap in Afro-Punk (The group "No Surrender" that played Saturday being a good example of some next-level stuff), but the evening didn't provide any out-the-box entertainment to show what Afro-Punk is really about.

Of course when I leave NYC for home all the big rockin' guns come out
i really would suggest that people get recommendations/check out myspaces of the artists playing before going to the shows, because the performers are so incredibly diverse (which i don't think is a bad thing at all)...

for some reason it irks me a bit when i see people wank about AP related stuff.
not that you can't have and voice an opinion but just the fact that AP things exist in the first place is pretty remarkable... i feel a little attached to the project, i guess, as lame as that seems. you get to see a bunch of black people on guitars - be more appreciative. i mean, c'mon!

anyway, i'm looking forward to the noisettes and tamar on sat.
I WOULD HAVE appreciated some Black folks on guitar Monday had there been any...
okay, fair enough.you are excused. as for the rest of you... ahem...
: )
