AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

Perhaps the best ending set of the entire show? When the drummer handed his equipment to some dude in the crowd and then jumped down into it to continue drumming the final song amongst the fans - it was pure, 100% awesome. Then, when Mick Collins stepped off the stage to guitar in the crowd with him, it was the magic of rock n roll right there.

Thank you, Afropunk and The Dirtbombs for making this happen.

yeah i was there. it was cool, the whole performance. actually i didnt get to see the whole performance, but i mean did the fest for that day end early or was it just me? after the performance people just pick up and left. i basically assume it was over then. i stuck around for a few minutes and then left myself.
Yeah, Saturday's show was short, but tight - lots of good music that came back to back to back without any major downtime or filler. After The Dirtbombs finished up, I just took in the sights and sounds of Fort Greene as I hadn't been there in forever. Was a damned fine day.
I was officially converted. They were off the chain. I'm definitely going to hunt down their cd's. The ending was great, loved the drummer(s). Their secret weapon was the second guitarist though, Homegirl was in the zone!

Let me suggest that you start with Ultraglide in Black, which is widely regarded as the crew's best work. It's a cover CD of old soul classics mixed with an original tune here or there. It manages to rock out, but stays true to the soul roots. Excellent disc.

The double drums and double basses give them freedom to try some experimental shit (like drumming in the crowd!) without loosing beat (literally). The 'Bombs are playing NYC again, in August I think, as an opening act for a band I'm sure they'll outshine. I just love the energy.

Thanks for the suggestion.
