AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

What do you wear? What's your style? What's your makeup philosophy?

I am makeup challenged; I'm the only girl in my family and my mother was never into that stuff so when I need help (like, desperately) there are a few sites I turn to:

http://www.ethnic-beauty-central.com/

Well, actually that one is all I need most of the time because it tells you everything and has application videos and links to small businesses specializing in ethnic make up. Plus, it's for all of us!

Make up itself:

http://www.crushgroovecosmetics.com/cart.html
Crush Groove has the most diverse colors of any mineral brand I've seen lately and after 2 weeks of wearing their makeup my skin has improved dramatically.

http://www.blacminerals.com/
I'll admit that I only want to try their makeup because the third woman from the left is stunning.

http://www.monave.com/
I want to try this brand because it is $5 cheaper than most mineral lines.

I use Fashion Fair (FF). It's the only make up that's nice on my face. I don't wear too much make up. I just use FF powder, lip gloss, and eye shadow by Cover girl.

I'm also trying the smokey eyes look. Not too much of it, not too little, just right.
I go nude 99% of the time. I do use tumeric to even my skin tone. I mix it with my face mask and after washing it off good it leaves a slight yellow tinge to my skin. I haven't tried mineral makeup but I guess the principle is a little similar to tumeric, eh?

What reasons do you all have for wearing makeup?

In the past I used makeup to cover up a bad complexion. Now that my complexion is light years better I find no need for the stuff any more. As for accessory cosmetics - lipstick, eyeshadow, eye liner, etc ... I've never gotten into them. I will go for shimmer or bronzer if it's a special night. Anything around my eyes makes them water as I am allergic to everything, plus I wear glasses. If I didn't do glasses, def. eye liner or khol or something. I've always liked eyeshadow and lipstick that go with outfits and looks, but on other people though. I just keep myself nude.

My mom's philosophy - no makeup (foundation) in the summer cause that's when your skin needs to most breath. And a good tan works wonders as a makeup replacer in terms of evening skin tone (in Canada, I would use bottle tanner to even my skin tone due to living as one of the mole people).

If you use a pencil and make small strokes then blot with a small brush it gives a subtle smokey eyes look. I think the ethnic beauty site has tips for that under the black beauty or indian beauty sections.

Why I wear makeup:
When I had acne I never wore makeup; that just seemed like a really bad idea. After my skin cleared up I started to wear make up; I wore make up for the first time in my life less than a year ago. It was covergirl liquid foundation and it made my face itch sp I switched to powder then found out about beneficial natural mineral make up.
I used to only wear lip gloss but recently I found out how awesome deep dark lipsticks look on my lips; I'm officially out of my bright phase.

I'm really into presentation and looking my best. I hate looking dowdy, frumpy or frigid.

Because I wear minimal makeup most people don't even know I have foundation on because most of my work is on my eyes or lips; to me it's like the translucent powder that soaks up oil and prevents shine I have oily skin and a lot of shine.

I heart eyemakeup (smokey eyes look great behind glasses!) yet lack the funds to look good wearing it. I think that's my whole issue with make up; I lack the funds to do it how I want it done.

I think I wear makeup for presentation purposes and I'm really big about taking care of myself now and makeup is part of how I care for myself; before I didn't care anything about how I looked because I didn't care about myself at all. I think makeup is apart of my sexuality or some other bullshit like that. Plus, now my makeup acts as a medicine a very tiny bit of ylang ylang goes a long way for me bedroom and beyond. ^__~

Next up is my eyebrows; I've seen other girls with thin eyebrows skirt by without getting them done but I want some structure and more shape: why the f can't I find eyebrow powder at the drug store?!!
Crushgroove looks cool and their ingredients are all things I've used on my ever so easily irritated skin (green clay and chamomile in their stuff - it is very healing for the skin almost like wearing an all day facial). I wouldn't mind trying some of their stuff out because I agree with you, it is good to have great presentation especially for interviews. In the near future, that is going to be my life (unless I open up a health resort in the mountains of Jamaica and live out my dream of hippiedom) >.< so having something that is good to my skin would be great. It's how the game works so I would rather play it and not fuck up my lymphatic system. :D

So, you've tried it? Was it hard to find a matching shade? Did you try the sheer coverage powder (i wouldn't mind buying some of that now)? Share!
It was hard for me to find a matching shade. I think I ordered two sample packs because I wasn't sure what my undertone was. Now I know I'm in between two shades with red and yellow undertones; if you tell them you're inbetween they'll mix the colors for you but I just ordered two.

I usually just wear the henna n' spice translucent powder for everyday and do the foundation makeup for special occasions.
Coolness!

It was difficult for me to find my shade but I'd say your somewhere around cinnamon in yellow.
If you have olier skin you can get a shade lighter than what you need because the oil causes the makeup to darken a little.
I'll have to look at those links HC thanks for putting these up here.

And Hell Cat do not fret, I did not totally get down comfortably with wearing makeup until my mid 20's. It seemed like so much work and I had a hard time getting eyeliner and pencil right, let alone lipstick. My chola friends from high school tried to teach me the art of melting the tip of red Maybelline jet black eye pencil, to aid in its application. My mom even told me when we were visiting our Grandma then in Nogales, Arizona, walking to the Safeway store, "Rosenda, why don't you put on some makeup? You never know who you're going to meet. You might meet Mr. Right." And she laughed.

I remember telling her "Mom, I doubt I'll meet Mr. Right at the Safeway in Nogales, Arizona". But I got her point....it still took me awhile to get the application of eye liner and pencil right and everything else.

After I got the hang of it by practicing, I was all into my goth sort of phase. Bloody red lips or my favorite, the cholas called it Black Cherry lipstick (it was made by one of the first makeup lines in the market for Black women, forgot the name), jet black eyepencil with the black liquid eyeliner by Shiseido (and they dont' make it anymore! That stuff was amazing!) all kind of drawn out in the slightly exaggerated Egyptian style past the edge of eye.

Frankly I haven't been doing much makeup other than lipstick eyeliner and mascara. I waver and just dont put any on but lipgloss and mascara sometimes.

I have some good eyeliner by Rimmel (expensive but it's good and last forever) and Avon (the liquid that they only sell once a year). And mascara some basic Maybelline and some no name brand from the dollar store. Honestly Maybelline is better and more consistent.

Lipstick and lipgloss most I have is from eyes lip face, Shiseido, Avon, and some kickass red from Mac and another brand I got in a black case at the beauty supply store that was going out of business nearby. I'll have to go home and look at the name for you. That stuff is GREAT.

The ONLY lip liner for me is Prestige Waterproof. Reasonable, great colors, does not melt or run on you even in a hot nightclub.

I'd love to do the foundation thing but I have not bought any in so long, the brand I bought from Ultimtima II Nakeds line (haha it was called Manila/F4, which tells you I'm the yellow sort of olive beigy skin tone) is no longer sold or made I think. Can't find it no place. I gave up on that.

Years ago, 1990 - 1991 I worked two jobs one year, and one of them was selling cosmetics in a big department store. It was kind of a fun job, and it was interesting to learn that there are very few manufacturers of cosmetics. To find out that Prescriptives, Clinique, Estee Lauder and a few other labels were all produced still by the Revson/Revlon corporation was very interesting.

Back then, as far as makeup for women of color, there was Fashion Fair and also some good basic colors by the Ultima II Nakeds line, as well as Bobbi Brown and Iman and Barbara Walden (she and Fashion Fair started about the same time, both of them had the most AWESOME lipstick shades and great range of colors for foundation and powder). At that time also, Shiseido actually came out with some great powder and foundations for browner skin.

You know I learned the most about makeup from as to good colors? The Mexican and Black drag queens who shopped at the store (it was in the Beverly Center which is between Beverly Hills and Hollywood areas). And they also schooled me on who had the best variety. Fashion Fair. Who knew? It was also funny to me that the two best groups of customers are Japanese students on vacation and Drag Queens. Both of them know EXACTLY what they want and buy TONS of it.

Anyhow....I LOVE that there are WAY more brands geared to Black Women now. I'll have to try some of them.

Practice is the whole thingy. I need to get more make up. I need tons of it because every 6 months I'm out of everything and/or my tastes have changed. I need to find Japanese students on vacation and drag queens, lol.

I used to play with makeup all the time when I was a preteen; i learned how to make every lipstick into a dark black cherry style color.

right now i'm just concentrating on daytime looks and a lengthening and thickening mascara because I was not blessed with feminine eye lashes.
I use Crushgroove Cosmetics. I especially love the henna oil obsorbing powder. My dad and I tend to get really shiny foreheads and noses (aka the "T" zone) and that stuff is great. It doesn't go on heavy and its gives me a slight glow, which is pretty awesome.

I just got into makeup on my own and never looked back. I'm still working on my technique, everyone always is. It's easy to get caught up in and it can be expensive if you get really into it. But if you are trying to stick with all natural stuff than stick with these brands. My makeup style tends to be bright and crazy. I'm working on how to tone down my look for my conservative job *rolls eyes*. Which is a lot easier said than done.

If you are trying to do bright and outrageous than I recommend the almighty MAC www.maccosmectics.com There tends to be a MAC store in all major cities. They are always willing to help you do your makeup and figure out whats right for you (but do know that if someone does your makeup for an hour they do expect you to buy something).

When it comes to makeup, don't be cheap. Cheap stuff tends to be the stuff that will break out your skin. Yes brands like wet n' wild are reliable, but if its some off the wall brand that you've never heard of that cost 60cents then just walk away. A good website to get some tips and tools to start off with without breaking the bank is www.eyeslipsface.com or ELF.

Right now MAC has a line out where their makeup brushes are cheaper than normal. So you may want to check that out.
For those of you who are interested MAC has a free shipping promotion going on right now. There is no minimum purchase or anything
MAC also has a recycling program where if you bring in 6 empty containers, you get a free eyeshadow or lipgloss.

I'm one of those girls that rarely leaves the house without a little bit of makeup. Just a little. I don't pack it on, and usually you can't tell it's there unless you really look. I wear glasses myself, but makeup has never been a problem for me.

I use Smashbox concealer, either Smashbox O-Glow or Stila blush, and Urban Decay eyeliner + eyeshadow. I usually go for warm brown/bronze/gold eyeshadows that blend with my skin tone for a more natural look. Although lately, a friend of mine who is really into makeup has convinced me to try some brighter colors, and I've been experimenting with this lovely electric blue. For skincare, I've been enjoying the Body Shop's Tea Tree line.
