AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Hi there, im PrincessKp AKA Kenya. Got a question that i really need help on. I have a "PEAR" shaped body (thick thighs, small waist, & small top). I am a 17yr old African American young lady and I love the punk rocker/skater clothing scene. I wanted to get help on how i should dress. You dont really see thick black girls dressing skater and punk, but when you do sometimes it looks a bit okward becuase you usually see skinny shapeless young white girls that dress that way(no offense). And sometimes ppl can pull it off, but i cant. I wear mostly short sleeve shirts that have different skulls and checkars and stars and hearts and lightning bolts and stuff like that, and i always make sure that the shirts go a bit past my waist. But what i need advise on the most is in the pants department. I like those straight pants that arent bellbottoms, but my hips just poke out and i look weird :[ So can someone pleasesesese help me and show me in the right direction to clothe the shape of my body in a sicknasty sweet punk way, so that i dont look dumb.

there are so many options...

well, re: jeans...
try finding a really nice straight leg or a slight bootleg as opposed to skinny/tapered jeans (the ones that narrow at the ankles)... you want some fabric on the bottom of yer legs to balance out yer hips, even the skinniest girls feel like their hips flare in skinny/tapered jeans. plus, the straight leg will still look 00s/80srevival.
oh and always opt for a darker wash w/ less distressing or detailing esp around the hips/ass... of course mod it w/ whatever the hell you want. :)

also,
mini skirts (and suspenders) w/ layered stockings (fishnets on top), and boots, maryjanes, or creepers = hot "sicknasty sweet punk".
and if you've got a nice rack pls show it off by accentuating it a v-neck and w/ gathering right under your bust and floats away over the stomach or have something else going on around the stomach. and then if you have a great waist and beautiful calves try a high waist pencil skirt that gives you the right support up front and cuts off under the knee to make your legs and feminine curves look too beautiful...
and then just more great fitting skirts and dresses...buy them and have them taken in yourself.
...so many options! :D

when women with curves dress body consciously (w/ confidence) and not as a trend victim they're sexy as hell. :]

also check out Beth Ditto from Gossip and Toccara Jones (when clothed, dang...)
and imo, pin-up fashion is for women who have curves.
Finding good pants that fit you well is hard for those of us with some hips and butt, for sure.

Excellent suggestions Lesypersound.

In addition, I'll add this on......go try on pants in places you would not normally shop. Go to a woman's shop, places like Ashley Stewart, Lane Bryant, The Avenue, Roaman's, Catherine's, etc etc. Go look at the straight basic pants. Usually you can find some basic ones. Those pants are made in size 14 on up. Sometimes, plus size shops geared to younger crowd will have some killer nice pants and skirts that WILL fit your curves.

If the pants fit but are kind of long, buy them anyway and hem them yourself, or take them to the cleaners to take them up (out here they will charge you anywhere from $8 - $15 but it is so worth it).

If you find pants that you like how the leg looks on you, but are looser in the waist/hips then you want, again, take them to the cleaners to altered. A few good pants that look good on you, fit you well, are worth a few extra dollars, even if you have to save up to do it.

Be creative, like Lesypersound suggests. I LOVE dresses like what Lesy talks about......also the wrap dresses and empire waist dresses can be your friend. I have a good friend who is my age, and she is like you, even more so: very small top and very big bottom. She ALWAYS looks good, in my opinion. She does those kind of dresses, sometimes with a cool jacket over it and nice shoes or boots.

I love those higher waist skirts too: I also like the skirts (of any fabric) that go from the waist out, A-line or even pleated. Stick to the just above the knee length, to show off the curvy legs.

Girl, enjoy the curves. Have fun learning along the way what looks best on you. :)
hey let the hips stick out be you
