AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

I mean really. I know that there are only a handful of black/brown folks in Austin, but there has to be at least one other AP.

Uh oh,

I thinking of moving to Austin. Tired of NYC. Is it really that blah? I thought that the many bands and artists gave it a little kick....no?
It's pretty cliquish and there are good bands. But it is not racially diverse at all. There may be a few sprinkles here and there.

You were at Highland Mall. Yes, downtown is frat central. There is one punk bar on 6th street called jackalope. That's where I hang out. But in the back area of that bar. Because the college kids are taking over the front. But the punks still hang out in the back. The punk clubs are on Red River...Room 710, Beerland, and Red 7 (7th st). You still won't find color, but you will find punks and rockabilly peeps, who have shown themselves to be good people.

when I went to go visit Austin last year, I too noticed the cliquish'nish . Folks were friendly, but it was very fratty' and collegy'. ....only with very little color lol. Pretty city though. : ) I didnt' run into other Black people till we stopped by this mall before we hit 290 back to Houston. I forgot the name of the mall, but when I went in, it was like 'ah! here are the Blacks!' lol ....of course, no cool AP Blacks, but Black people (and latino) nonetheless. Next time I go back, I'll try to explore other areas of the city besides the capitol building, Zilker (?) park, and downtown.
