How could she? Antoinette Nicole Davis is accused of selling her five-year-old daughter Shaniya Davis into prostitution

U.S. police were today hunting for a missing five-year-old girl who was sold for sex by her mother.

Shaniya Davis has been missing for six days after she was last seen being carried into a hotel room by a man.

FBI agents and U.S. Marshalls have joined the nationwide search for the toddler amid fears she had been sold to a paedophile ring.

Police have charged the girl's mother Antoinette Davis with human trafficking and prostitution offences.

An arrest warrant issued for the 25-year-old said she allowed her daughter to be taken 'with the intent that she be held in sexual servitude.'

Davis, who is pregnant, first reported her daughter missing last Tuesday.

Police were suspicious of her story after reviewing a timeline of the events leading up to her disappearance from a trailer park in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

They later found CCTV footage from a hotel 40 miles from Fayetteville showing the five year old girl being carried into a hotel room by Mario McNeill.

She has not been seen since and her mother has refused to cooperate with police.

Asked if police think the girl is still alive, Fayetteville police Sgt. John Somerindyke said: 'We sure hope so.'

The girl had only been living with her mother for three weeks, according to her father Bradley Lockhart.

He had primary custody of the girl, but had agreed to let her stay with her mother after she found a place to live and held a job for six months.

Lockhart broke down in tears at a press conference when he sobbed: 'I just want her to come back safe.'

Police have not charged anyone with molesting Shaniya, but said the investigation is ongoing.

The man accused of taking her turned himself in on Friday. Police said he admitted to kidnapping the child and has been charged with kidnap.

According to arrest documents, Davis 'knowingly provided Shaniya Davis with the intent that she be held in sexual servitude' and she 'permitted an act of prostitution.'

Shit...
This is a prime example of people who don't need kids. If you know your not going to be a good parent or not ready don't have kids plain and simple. All theses things out here available to prevent people from having kids yet they still do...It's just crazy to me. So many people who want kids and can't have them but she sells hers into prostitution. CRAZY SHIT!!!
Things like this make me tremble at how the system could fail so utterly. Here we had a girl with a loving father and he let his child live with her mother because the mother had gotten herself a little straighten out and held down a job for a while. The second she is within her mother's grasp, her mother strikes and now she's dead. It's like the tale of the Scorpion and the Frog - some creatures just can't change their nature, even in the face of ire consequences. How did this woman ever get the right to take care of any child? Should stricter standards be set in place? This is terrible.

:(

bullshit. fuck this woman... i feel so sorry for her father (link).

i'm surprised that this is even on the news. most of the time only white kids (girls) even make the news.

my heart just broke a little bit.

Might be stretching it a bit here, but my guess is, since Blacks are still being humanized in the media right now (seems popular), this would be fair game to expose our "humanity" and "fallibilties" (some of that good Generation-O equality) Black female parent cast as the villain in a newsworthy child crime -- too juicy to resist and overlook, I suppose. Methinks a few of my SBF-mother co-workers are going to have their "nappy-headed-unfit-to-be-a-mother", self-righteous commentary at the ready tomorrow.

Not to make light of it, but if I should take note of numbers given before, this isn't an uncommon crime, albeit a shitty one. I think the story's intended to be more about the mother than the child, though...
i think it has more to do with the whole angle of being sold into prostitution, there's a clearly identifiable villain, her dad is desperately looking for her, she's a sweet and "cute" little kid, and her age--she's too young to put herself at risk (unlike the many missing black girls who may have ran away or whatever the media wants to blame for the girls for their own disappearances).
... Like someone said earlier, I don't understand why they think she was sold off for prostitution. I don't expect all details to be divulged so soon (if at all), but that's also why I don't understand why popular sentiment, thus far, favors the assumption that this woman is guilty of that particular crime. It's as if, simply because it's a child crime, everyone automatically assumes the accused is guilty. Nobody knows anything about this woman's parenting skills, based on the slivers of personal information peppered into the articles published thus far. From what I could gather, she hasn't admitted to anything, and doesn't seem to know this McNeill character personally.

And here's one for the "Unpop" thread: I have a feeling that the father is not what would be considered "African-American." Somebody might rightfully tell me that has nothing to do with a child's victimization, but I think it has much to do with how this story has been presented thus far. She's the perfect foil to the caring father, and some angry folk are going to enjoy "justifiably" disliking her nappy-headed self, based on some of the blog comments I've seen already, making reference to this woman's hair texture, supposed "race", and other irrelevant superficialities (as if these are signifiers of a person's abilities to be a fit parent -- some subconscious shit). Methinks if this woman wasn't black, AP folk would shed one little "(American) Indian tear" and keep it moving.

I agree with Damos on some points (see: tangents in the John Muhammad thread) regarding the "guilty till proven innocent" sentiment that pervades crimes horrendous enough to shock people. From the looks of the news articles I've read so far, cops don't even know enough yet. Either that, or they don't yet care or find it feasible to present any evidence publicly against the mother to justify her arrest.
