AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Do you think the relationship between these two races has deteriorated? I'm curious to know if anyone thinks so. I feel like it has as I look back in the past and see that it seemed like there was somewhat of a tight unity between the two. As I look around today it almost seems like the two have separated quite a bit compared to what it used to be. I know for some, they just don't want to be associated with blacks, or they were taught not to associate with blacks...For the others who still see blacks as a unification, they do so because they know that they either have some black heritage themselves, or they realize their people went through similar struggles...Perhaps I'm only judging on what goes on in my area, but if I'm seeing everything wrong...ENLIGHTEN ME!

Point still stands.
I agree to disagree with you on this.

It seems like outside of NYC all bets are off.

Somewhat, where I live it seems that way.More so with the women then than the men,Mexican/Guatemalian etc.women act real scary toward me like im gonna do something to them, and im not even trying to pursue any of them.I grew up in NY and there were a great amount of Puerto Ricans there, they always had a GREAT UNITY with Blacks and still do.Back when I was in High School all I used to date was Puerto Rican girls. So it really depends on where U live!
I'm fine with it too as long as there is no dissing happening. I live in a state that has many Hispanics, and there have been moments when females have felt for whatever reason to disregard me. Before I moved there was an influx of poor Hispanics but had it been poor blacks it would have been the same issue. Ghetto is ghetto doesn't matter the color. It has been made aubndantly clear by some that I am not welcome, nor will I be included. I can go about my business but there will come a time when it's going to be loud and in stereo and I will have to deal with people who do not speak english and will never speak english. (in Miami) and not lose muh cool.

I never knew there was an "alliance" between us and them, at least in this area (Maryland/DMV area). The Mexicans, mostly illegal immigrants, just started entering the area about ten years ago. Few of them speak English, and even fewer of us speak Spanish, so there's a great disconnect on that alone. We're pretty segregated from one another too, they stick to their enclaves away from where the blacks are...don't know why. Besides that, I feel like we have little in common with them besides the fact we're both "minorities. So at the end of the day, I don't feel any hostility towards them, I just don't identify with them or immigrants in general.
Can't help to think if the shoe were on the other foot, if we'd have THEIR support.

We have a paradox of power because we ARE the most visible minority. We are the ones who have the civil rights action progress under our belts. What the hell could they honestly do to help us when they have no such precedents in this country? That's not a knock on hispanics, it's just a challenge to the "would they help us if it were us" mentality. They don't have the symbolism, power (yes, power) and history in this country that we do so how would they even have the clout to help us? And the only reason this stuff in Arizona is happening to them is because you could not get away with that stuff on a black person nowadays. We are not the only bottoms in American anymore and compared to the other bottoms we've got a lot more done in terms of race.
cesar chavez... but he's blah in my book for various reasons. but whatever.
and cops get away w/ racial profiling, e.g. dwb, harassing "a-rab" men, stoners, etc
Lyfen, way back when we did have each other's community support out here. It was commonplace then.
I don't know what the eff happened, what started the triggering of this ugliness and infighting. Lot of anger and distrust on both sides out here and I know it ain't only here. It's a damn shame and an old game of divide and conquer. ESPECIALLY with the Blacks and Latinos. These days that's a horrible shame, do you know what power we'd both have on our sides if we JOINED forces out of respect and honor? Damn, the two of our groups make over 75% out here where I live, ya know? No one ever thinks that way of it, the POTENTIAL.

Latinos always want support when the law chase them down..They had no issue with the injustices blacks faced in this nation when it didnt concern them.

Blacks should do as much for them as they did for blacks during the civil rights movement....Which is absolutely nothing.
Latinos aren't a monolith just like Black folks aren't a monolith. I've had good and bad experiences, but most of that related to the individual people as opposed to their race.
speaking from my own personal experience,
last year... me & my wife were homeless. We needed a place to crash for a couple of days (and store our bags), a wonderful man named Santos and his Dominican family allowed me & my wife to stay in the brownstone he owned, for FREE (with NO ulterior motive).
His family fed us, offered transportation, and expressed their genuine compassion.
He never acted awkward, never had a bad attitude, and was never condescending towards me.

Fuck whats shown on the 5'o'clock news. Yeah, there's bad apples in every culture, but so what? Why cry about that?
Socio-political class theories aside, some Puerto Ricans & Dominicans have shown me love at times when my own "Black people" wouldn't.
Comparing their treatment of you to black peoples treatment of you is kinda unfair. The black American was taught to hate themselves and people who look like them.
