AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

After you see this hang your head in shame. There's a reason why so many white people hate black people..

Baltimore (CNN) -- Onlookers laughed and did nothing to help as a man was beaten, stripped and robbed on the street in Baltimore.

The attack, which police say happened on March 18 after St. Patrick's Day celebrations, was captured by at least two cameras. Video of it went viral.

"Not only did they rob him, but they attempted to strip him of his dignity. They tore his clothes off; they mocked him. That behavior just will not be tolerated," said Detective Nicole Monroe with the Baltimore police.

Police say they have identified one suspect, but have made no arrests.

They are not releasing the victim's identity except to say he was a 31-year-old man from Arlington, Virginia.

The victim was on the way to his hotel from a downtown Baltimore club when he was attacked, according to a police report. The man had been drinking. He told police he couldn't recall exactly what happened, but the videos fill in the blanks.

In them, a man is seen standing, unsteadily, against a row of mailboxes. A crowd starts to gather and women dance suggestively against him. Someone notices his watch and a hand seems to grab something from one of the man's front pockets.

He pursues the supposed thief and is punched in the face. The man falls over backward and his head hits the sidewalk so hard it can be heard on the video.

"Smackdown!" someone yells.

His pockets are rifled and his clothes pulled off. Some people can be heard laughing. No one comes to his aid.

According to the police report, the man lost his Tag Heuer watch, which he valued at $1,300, his iPhone and car key.

CNN showed video of the attack to a number of people in Baltimore to gauge their response.

"That's pretty sad," said Finley George of Virginia, who was visiting the city with family. "I mean he obviously didn't do anything to anybody. They just got up on him and started beating him."

Do you know how pathetic you look grasping for solidarity. By God, man! Stand on your own two feet.

You can't possibly defend these people attacking this man and stripping him naked. I know it's embarrassing but we cannot ignore that we have a serious problem in our community. Burying your head in the sand is not going to ignore it.

Profiling

Right now, there isn’t enough known about the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a black, by George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old part-Hispanic, during his neighborhood watch tour in an Orlando, Fla., suburb. If evidence emerges that Zimmerman’s actions were not justified, he should be prosecuted and punished; however, there’s a larger issue that few people understand or have the courage to acknowledge, namely that black and young has become synonymous with crime and, hence, suspicion. To make that connection does not make one a racist. Let’s look at it.

Twelve years ago, a black Washington, D.C., commissioner warned cabbies, most of whom were black, against picking up dangerous-looking passengers. She described "dangerous-looking" as a "young black guy ... with shirttail hanging down longer than his coat, baggy pants, unlaced tennis shoes." She also warned cabbies to stay away from low-income black neighborhoods. Did that make the D.C. commissioner a racist?

In some cities, such as St. Louis, black pizza deliverers have complained about having to deliver pizzas to certain black neighborhoods, including neighborhoods in which they live. Are they racists? The Rev. Jesse Jackson once remarked, "There is nothing more painful for me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery -- (and) then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved." Does that make the reverend a racist?

The former Charleston, S.C., black chief of police, Reuben Greenberg, said the problem facing black America is not racial profiling. He said, “The greatest problem in the black community is the tolerance for high levels of criminality.” Former Los Angeles black police Chief Bernard Parks, defending racial profiling, said: "It's not the fault of the police when they stop minority males or put them in jail. It's the fault of the minority males for committing the crime. In my mind, it is not a great revelation that if officers are looking for criminal activity, they're going to look at the kind of people who are listed on crime reports." Are former police Chiefs Greenberg and Parks racist?

According to the Uniform Crime Report for 2009, among people 18 or younger, blacks were charged with 58 percent of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, 67 percent of robberies, 42 percent of aggravated assaults and 43 percent of auto thefts. As for murder, more than 90 percent of the time, their victims were black. These statistics, showing a strong interconnection among race, youth and crime, are a far better explanation for racial profiling and suspicion than simple racism.

Black Americans have spoken out against racial profiling by police. They’ve been insulted by store personnel who might give them extra scrutiny. There’s the insult of the sound of a car door being locked when a black approaches. It’s insulting to have taxi drivers pass up a black person and pick up white people down the street. In a similar vein, I’m sure that a law-abiding Muslim is insulted when given extra scrutiny at airports or listening to Fox News reporter Juan Williams, who was fired by National Public Radio in 2010 for publically saying that he gets nervous when he sees people on a plane with clothing that identifies them as Muslim. Blacks and Muslims who face the insults of being profiled might direct their anger toward those who’ve made blacks and crime synonymous and terrorism and Muslims synonymous.

God would never racially profile, because he knows everything, including who is a criminal or terrorist. We humans are not gods; therefore, we must often base our decisions on guesses and hunches. It turns out that easily observed physical characteristics, such as race, are highly interconnected with other characteristics less easily observed.

For most blacks to own up to the high crime rate among blacks is a source of considerable discomfort. Beyond that, it creates suspicions and resentment, which are destructive of good race relations, and it’s devastating to the black community, which is its primary victim.

That is just sad.

I'm sorry k but this is bullshit. No amount of statistics or scholarly reasoning will ever convince me that racial profiling is okay. This is the kind of thinking that get's young black men like Trayvon, young black men like me and black men like you killed everyday. This is the kind of drivel that stormfronters and various tea party types spout off with all the time to justify everything from our inferiority to the reason that we should all be treated as animals and I can't cosign that position. I don't know about you but when I see young Black men I don't know I don't automatically think they are going to rob me. I don't know about you but when I see a muslim in their religious attire I don't think they're about to go blow up some shit. And I have to say that I don't agree with anybody who feels differently. An individual who lives their lives in that way has a personal problem. Everybody should be judged on a case by case basis period. As members of the human race we should all be shown the same amount of dignity and respect until giving reason to be treated otherwise.

High black crime rates are not the reason Trayvon Martin is dead. Trayvon Martin's hoodie or his twitter profile pics with gold teeth are not the reason that he is dead either. You can't pin this one on ignant niggas on the block or trap rap music. That boy is dead beacuse of stupid george zimmerman and his stupid gun. You seem like an otherwise intelligent and well put together dude so I feel that it is really unfortunate that you seem so eager to place blame on your own people for the shit that happpens to other innocent black people at the hands of biased and misguided individuals who are outside of the black community. Individuals who see a person's color as a reason to fear, and hate and suspect, a reason to shoot first and ask questions later. And then you wonder why alot of these black youth don't give a fuck to begin with. Because people like Walter E. Williams and the media constantly have to "remind" them of how worthless and good for nothing they are. You are preaching to the choir here. We know we have many problems in the Black community. We know there's alot of fixing to be done and you post this stuff on afropunk a site dedicated to the "other black experience" why? To make us feel bad? To make us "hang our head heads in shame". To make us feel empathy with the "white people" who "hate" us. How about we do something to build up the love for our people? How about that. I don't feel any shame or embarrasment about being black. And a couple of knuckleheads who fail through the cracks because this backwards ass system has failed them is not going to change that.  What are you doing to uplift us besides making us "hang our heads in shame". Besides pointing out problems that we already know exist. What are you doing to let the youth in your community know that that they are beautiful and intelligent and that they have the potential to be great. There are broken schools and broken black famlies out there. What are you doing to address those issues besides posting negative articles on afropunk.com ?

I don't agree with profiling. You can see the thread I started about the Trayvon Martin Tragedy. I am a 250 pound black man with a shaved head and I know people cannot see I have an engineering degree. I get profiled all the time. Trust me I am the first to stand up for black people when we are wronged. That doesn't make me not understand that we own some of the negative attention we get in our community.

Trayvon Martin is dead and that is tragedy. Name the other black kids that got killed that week through senseless violence. Name me 5 in the last year who suffered the same fate. Most people can't. Most people don't give a shit. We aren't going to march for them either. Why are those boys not known and how come we are not showing the same level of outrage at their deaths? Because those other black youths were killed by other black youths and that has become far too commonplace.

We own the violence in our community because regardless of how much the "system" affects us we ultimately have a choice. We will march for Trayon but we won't march that white man who was brutalized. Why? That is the moral hypocrisy that we cannot afford in our community. We cannot expect the world to keep pitying us when we are abused then act like the system caused the black men to do what they did. We can't keep running the high moral game to get sympathy from whites when we are indifferent to the crimes black people commit against whites. The niggas that did this to that white man would do it to you to. We can't afford to have this sort of behavior to be seen as acceptable in our community and we can't blame the failing of our people on the system. Even if we could why not stand up to it and fight it and fight the ones who have given into it.

The yahoos on Stormfront would not have anything to talk about if we didn't keep giving them shit to back up their racist views. Walter Williams does not and has not told black american  they are worthless. That guy came up from the hard part of philly and made it when white people were quick to put a boot in a niggas head. He fought the power and we would do well to follow his example. Read about him.

As far as what I do is concerned. I call the police when I see someone getting hurt. If possible I intervene. I go to court and testify because i come forward as witness. I tell cats that I see standing on the block that i'll give them a ride to the Employment Security Commission and they can talk to my man who will get them a gig even if they have a record. I make sure my god children are in school and on time with the materials they need to do their work. I let my oldest godchild read my essays and buy him books like my parents bought me so he can learn about the outside world. I post the alternative view on AP because no one else would. I expose people to ideas that they wouldn't see represented and I challenge black people on here when they say niggerish ass shit instead of lurking in the wings and towing the party line. My credentials are unassailable and I am not going to act like niggas taking the easy way out is ok.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING TO COMBAT THE ILLS IN THESE POVERTY STRICKEN COMMUNITIES OUTSIDE OF TALKING SHIT ONLINE Are you involved in mentoring programs, anti - crime initiatives like 100 Black Men and Women or MAD DADS ( a Black mentoring organization where i LIVE or the Action Network's mentoring program or the NAACP or AL Sharpton or Jesse Jackson anti- crime and mentoring young people not to go into gang life or illegal activities or a local Black Church group who mentors young people. These people are thee angels who are doing a yeoman's work while you are quoting Walter WIlliams and Thomas Sowell, two "HOUSE NIGGAS" who love to dick- grab and talk racial shit from the comfort of their 'THINK TANKS". I have never seen those two  NIGGAS near a Black Community unless they were on FOX NEWS or Rush Limbaugh's show talking negative about it.

There are Black folks who doing everything to combat crimes like those in the video and get no money nor publicity for what they do, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY BESIDES POSTING SOMETHING THAT MOST BLACK PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD WOULD NEVER DO TO OUR FELLOW MAN?

I know I am going to get a smart- ass remark from you because you can't help yourself .

I have alot to say about this topic but it will fall on deaf ears because it would be insane of me to repeat myself about that type of behavior.

Speak your peace, Chris.
