AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

I figure this is the best spot for this thread. We had somthing like it on the old boards.

Right now I'm diggin':
Anime: Robotech:Shadow Rising.
If your like me (prolly not...but) your all kinds of into robot anime. This Movie is really important as it's the latest movie in the Robotech saga starting at the end of the Scott Bernard chapter. This flick was 30years in the making so, needless to say I bought it special order

Manga: Xenon
This comic was a VIZ/Eclipse title from the 80's. It's kinda like Guyver but waaaaaay more violent and bloody and just cooler in general

OVA : Samurai Champloo. I can't get enough of this show. There's also no point in talking about it since most folks already have a good idea about it.
I'm also digging another OVA series though: Space Adventure COBRA. This show is fucking great!!!! It's like watching a show dedicated to Han Solo only it's got MORE imagination to it and way more titties. Fucking AWESOME!!

Hentai?
Does Urotsukidoji count?

Anime hasn't really been doing much for me lately. When I first was introduuced to it I was gungho and ecstatic and everything seemed daring and original. Right now nothing really catches my fancy as I find it a bit too tiring to dig around the mire for an anime that will pique my interest. Enjoyed Monster but have been left a little high and dry searching around for the next buzz (and that was well over a year ago). I'm picky and there are soooo many cliched School Girl / Girl Warrior / Mecha / Fighter with Special power, and Pokemon/Naruto wannabes out there. I crave originality and funky freshness. Would like to see all of Cowboy Bebop so I think that's my future.

Manga: Still reading Berserk (and finding out how far I can stand all of the depravity). Had a friend link me this weird manga about germs/nanobots reanimating dead flesh into robotic horrors that emit smelly gas. It was really bizarre and unintentionally funny. Right now I am all for Manga.

That COBRA series looks interesting. Han Solo is the man and I am a sucker for a good space adventure. The latent old school Star Wars geek in me wants to check it out.

Haven't watched any Hentai lately. Used to read a lot of the hentai-themed manga - Bondage Fairies and the like. Anything with a bit of fantasy or scifi or paranormal and a pinch of humor on the side and I am game.
dude, if you wanna check out COBRA, go to animefreak.tv and look it up. they got all 31 episodes. I don't know were to get the movie but, that should get you started.
as far as other shit, you said you were into cowboy bebop. Samurai Champloo was done by the same director only a little later and with idea of mixing hip-hop with late trans-feudal Japanese culture. it's a masterpiece!! as far as finding episodes, just look it up, it's everywere.

enjoy
I haven't seriously pursued anime or manga in over a year. I can't even watch AS's saturday-only anime block.

It's Viz's fault for not continuing BASTARD!! I love that manga more than I love you sometimes, it's just my favorite blend of casual misogyny, metal references and titties with an asshole hero. I've been meaning to check out Gokudo-kun Manyuuki for just this purpose.

Obsidian- What?! You must be kidding. Who the fuck hasn't seen all of Cowboy Bebop? lol.

I like the cliche stuff- give me Ranma1/2, Urusei Yatsura (been meaning to dive deep in to that), Rumic World, Fushigi Yugi, Rurouni Kenshin, Tokyo Babylon- practically everything CLAMP has ever done. ...just take the new school anime and shove it. I can't get into any of it.

I need more Lupin III. More Crayon Shin-chan. And seriously, I love me some Lupin III.

Never really had a desire to check out Berserk- now, I might.

Cartoon Network rotated the whole series like 300 times is all I'm saying. Circuit City, Suncoast etc., were all prominently displaying Spike Spiegel- everyone was all over it. I was in middle school when they first started showing it, now I'm a sophomore in college. That makes me feel old. Watching Tenchi Muyo and InuYasha and realizing I was 9 when Tenchi came on (memories of original Toonami, woot) and a freshman in highschool when InuYasha hit so hard it caused an implosion that destroyed Toonami- fucking Toonami is dead! I feel so old! Toonami was brand new when I was watching, now it's dead. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just saying....

I've never seen Ponyo- I've never really got into checking out Miyazaki's stuff but he directed Castle of Cagliostro which I fucking loved! It really was a slightly different take on Lupin and brought out his jester turned prince side with a bit of con man in him. It's also my favorite Lupin movie. I love the part where he and Jigen are throwing money out of the car windows and get chased by Zenigata(?) it reminded me of the Disney animated version of Robin Hood- I think someone on youtube made an AMV of that scene with a song from that movie.
I loved Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro as a kid. Just saw Castle in the Sky- I liked it too. It's easy to get into his magic and he has an old-fashioned pre-70s Disney feel, just the way the animation moves.

And of course, Princess Mononoke, I didn't even know who he was until that movie hit stateside, then I realized he also directed Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro. So I guess I'm on the Niyazaki bandwagon.

What's Ponyo about and what makes it terrible?

lol, you've made it clear that you wouldn't dig it in the first place. Just trust that it's garbagio.
How so? :(

Okay, I looked it up. Why wouldn't I like a goldfish with a human head. ...wait, what? It sounds like finding nemo + shrooms / things wanting to be human. And Little Mermaid.

That sounds like something I'd show my little nieces and nephews but not for me. ...there's no titties. :(

I would say. But that's such an old example. There's soo much shit out there now that's waaay more hardcore than Urotsukidoji. I believe BONDAGE GAME is something ov a yard stick. Also:
Pigeon Blood
Discode (uncensored is immpossible to find, though)
Demon Beast Invasion
Milk Money
It's cool. :D I've been kept in a closet, deprived of light and occasionally fed. Saw a few episodes of Bebop - enough to like the series and the sound, and then I went to university and these past 6 years have been school with sprinklings of anime. Since Bebop came on late TV I just caught it in that format because I love love love syndication and will choose that over watching it back to back streaming off the internet (I love being surprised with a new episode one week and a repeat I've seen a billion times another week). Yea ... and now it is not in syndication. Don't really know exactly what I am waiting for in regards to finishing watching that series. Guess I wanna make it special and guess I am afraid to see every episode and thus not be surprised by the show anymore.

Yea, I'm not a fan of new school anime. I'm highly interested in checking old series, even if they may be cliched. Perhaps I should check more OVA's as after checking he wiki page on em' they seem to be free from some o the plagues of anime.

I saw FLCL back in 03-04; got weirded out; and the proceeded to buy the Pillows CD off of Amazon. Haven't seen the series since then but still think about it every time a I ride by a Vespa and listen to that album. I seriously think that show was made to be one long animated music video for the pillows - kinda like the Pillow's version of Daft Punk's "Interstellar".
