... the other Black experience

Anybody dig free jazz, electronic, noise, and ambient music (ie. avant garde)?

If so, who do you like.  I currently listen to Area C, Black Boned Angel, Sunn O))), John Zorn, Ornette Coleman, Kevin Drumm and Basic Channel just to name a few.  I have hard time finding  other African-Americans who like this music.  I will admit the music can be strange and a little out there.  But if you have an discerning ear and esoteric taste you can find yourself opening up to a new world of sound.

Tell me what you think, I would like to start a discussion group for those who like avant garde music.

Hi,
I've been into experimental noise for years. I was the director of promotions for Silent Records, legendary ambient label lead by Kim Cascone. I also founded one of the first industrial bands in NJ in 1985. Also dig breakbeat, jungle, powernoise and such. Aphex Twin and the like.

You can check out my newest music at www.s6k.com/abstinence

Contact me and I'll see what I can do to connect you to people near you. I still have tons of contacts in the industry.

Hi,
Just wanted to mention that I was the executive producer of the DIJ, "Behind the Mask" documentary. I ran into a number of problems because some of his audience are Nazis, White power folks, ect. I received great props and solid sales for it until people realized a Black person created it, then everything fell apart. I decided to pull the release, which was wonderful to get away from any craziness like being seen as a Black person who supports Nazis.

In any case, if you didn't see it, I'll send you a copy.
You can check it out at: http://www.s6k.com/page.cfm?xid=2725931

p.s. I also did a Merzbow remix [with my project Abstinence] for the Ikebana CD, which came out a few years ago.

Now that is a good list of artist. You should listen to Kevin Drumm's Sheer Hellish Miasma. Nice bit of aural destruction.

Much respect. I have heard of Silent Records but I do not have any releases I do not think. Sort of surprising since I listen to ambient. Your background is impressive. I live in New Haven and I have been wondering if their were any African-Americans in my area that like the music I did. Hence, the message board.

It's sad the harsher side of music is populated by such hateful people.

I never really got into John Cage. I checked out An Imaginary Country. It's a great album.

I love Tim Hecker. I got everything he has ever made. You check the album he released last year "An Imaginary Country" good stuff. Also, you may like Fennesz. He's like the leader of the noise ambient genre. I listen a lot of this music. Glen Branca is another excellent artist. You try some John Cage as well.

I recently got into Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity and Can's Tago Mago album. Aumgn is a brilliant song from Tago Mago although I'm not quite sure what it's about.

By far one of my favorite album is Symphony nos. 8 & 10 by Glenn Branca. I don't know how to describe his music sometimes it's drone, noise, classical, avant-garde. Symphony no. 1 is my second favorite album from Branca. Harmonic Series Chords it's dramatic, drone, I love it lol.

Teiji Ito. He mainly composed music for Maya Deren films.

Tim Hecker is sort of like noise and ambient. I really like I'm Transmitting Tonight I think it's brilliant.

In their desparate need to cling to something, nazis often bark up the wrong tree with the artists they chose to champion. As far as i know, Death In June is NOT some right-wing/political extremist band. Same can be said for some many other bands that dabble in political extremist imagetry (insert Industrial, Neo-Folk, Darkwave, Metal, Power Electronics band name here).
I've never heard of a DIJ docu though. Sounds interesting.

Yes I've spent a large amount of time with Douglass and I worked on a number of Douglass' projects. I had done sound for his NYC show at the Frying Pan when he toured with Boyd Rice, so when he had performed at Walker Stage in NYC, his next time in NYC, he requested that I do the sound for him. As the live video was being mixed/mastered, he again requested that I be in the studio while it was being mixed. That was pretty cool since the audio engineer [Xris Flam / Mindswerve Studio] certainly didn't need me there to help him do his job. It was then during our 5-hour meandering conversation while Xris worked that I had the idea, and he accepted, to do the documentary. He said many people had suggested it since the 80's, but no one followed through. He was really cool to me and my wife, who are Black, so if he's a nazi, he's a really bad one. LOL!

He had flown into NYC specifically to film it. It's not a traditional doc. It's a highly produced conversation between he and I, but you only get his side as a stream of thought that encompasses his entire life. Most of the things he's said in the doc he'd never said on tape or in interviews before. Oddly enough, soon after that production I'd filmed Harry Allen from Public Enemy. I guess different sides of the spectrum.

If you send me a personal email, I'll send you a copy of it. It also says on the site why I stopped production, although we were doing quite well with our sales globally.

I am most definitely into music, some of which I'd call avant garde. Electronic, ambient, noise, anything like that are my favorite genres. I lsiten to almost anything, but my type of music is something that tries to push the limits of music, like Daedelus, Four Tet, David Ramos, Actress, Death Grips, anticon artists, Ninjatune roster, etc.

I'd say they count. After all, Avant-Garde mostly just means forward-thinking art of any sort.
