Anybody dig free jazz, electronic, noise, and ambient music (ie. avant garde)?

If so, who do you like. I currently listen to Area C, Black Boned Angel, Sunn O))), John Zorn, Ornette Coleman, Kevin Drumm and Basic Channel just to name a few. I have hard time finding other African-Americans who like this music. I will admit the music can be strange and a little out there. But if you have an discerning ear and esoteric taste you can find yourself opening up to a new world of sound.

Tell me what you think, I would like to start a discussion group for those who like avant garde music.

Not a huge fan, but I like some of it. I usually listen to jazz when I'm relaxed or trying to relax and when the music gets too chaotic I would rather listen to some metal. It's raging but it's still orderly.

JL mentioned Yusef Lateef. His Live at Pep's album is the bomb. I would put him in the same category as Eric Dolphy and Joe Henderson. The music may sometimes be harmonically "outside" (people play a bunch of notes out of the key signature) but the structure is still mellow. The Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor stuff is wild.

Have you ever heard John Zorn's Spy vs. Spy? The contractors should have had that one at Gitmo.
Archie Shepp's Fire Music is a good one too.

This is a lane I'm definately trying to get more into. I'm up on somethings but I'm always lookin' for new stuff. I like the early electronic stuff, like Wendy Carlos, Morton Subutnik and Tangerine Dream but also stuff like Steve Reich and Eno. As far as free jazz, Ornette is dope, as well as Sun Ra and pretty much most of the early 70's fusion from the likes of Miles,Herbie and Eddie Henderson. But I'll definately be copying and pasting some of the names I haven't heard of or don't know much about. Keep it coming and post videos too.

I am huge fan from my teen years about the old Brian Eno albums like Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy and Here Come the Warm Jets and a couple albums after that. The albums after that were way too mellow. I like the music and songs on the other albums. And if Kraftwerk counts.........I so enjoyed those two or three albums from the late 70's/early 80's.

Orlando/Uh-Oh should be on here. He is SERIOUSLY into experimenta/noise/anything and everything avant garde in all forms.

Dalek definitely counts. Their album Absences is clearly the first rap industrial, noise album. That blew my mind when I first heard it. Much respect to Dalek.
