An atheist group has filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent a cross made out of World Trade Center steel beams from going on display at the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
American Atheists sued this week in state court arguing that the group opposes the placement of the cross in the museum because members believe it is the only religious article getting special accommodation there.
The cross, made of two intersecting steel beams, was found standing in the rubble of the World Trade Center following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
"This cross is now a part of the official WTC memorial. No other religions or philosophies will be honored. It will just be a Christian icon, in the middle of OUR memorial,” Dave Silverman, president of American Atheists, said in a release.
Silverman added that the memorial must allow atheists and other belief groups to include their own displays of equal size.
For the past several years the cross has been housed at St. Peter's church. On Saturday it was permanently moved to the 9/11 Memorial Museum after a ceremonial blessing at Zuccotti Park.
The 9/11 Memorial Museum, which will officially open next year, said its mission is to tell the history of the attacks through artifacts like the cross.
"This steel remnant became a symbol of spiritual comfort for the thousands of recovery workers who toiled at ground zero, as well as for people around the world," said 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels. "In the historical exhibition, the cross is part of our commitment to bring back the authentic physical reminders that tell the story of 9/11 in a way nothing else can.”

Hahaha.
I don't see anything wrong with a cross there seeing as there were Christians who did die that day. But, there definitely needs to be recognition of the many other beliefs.
Permalink Reply by Yank on November 16, 2011 at 5:07pm Sorry to bump this old thread, but just had a talk about this with someone.
The cross was part of the structural framework and was a pretty touching symbol of mourning for everyone at the time, especially the workers who had to collect body parts.
I'm a die hard atheist and don't get this shit AT ALL. When did atheists go from being (at the very worst) snarky and clever smartasses laughing behind their hands at all the theist drones and their needs for flying spagetti monsters, to being a whiny, oppressed advocacy group? It's bloody embarrassing.
Solution: Put up some quote that says something like "May this marker stand eternally as a symbol for people OF ALL FAITHS who lost their lives that dark day." Done! What is the problem?

Permalink Reply by Eris on November 28, 2011 at 4:11am I'm an agnostic and I really don't have a problem with it. When people make comments that all religions or beliefs need to be acknowledge, that doesn't mean that everything but Christanity is allowed since IT IS a relgion and there were plenty of Christians along with others that died that day. I could understand if this were a case of a bunch of religious nutjobs being adamant that the cross could be the ONLY symbol allowed but the more I think about it, this doesn't seem to be the case at all. It seems like a bunch of Atheist who are upset that a religious symbol that they don't happen to like is being shown, one that was created during the destruction of the towers mind you. Its not like someone made the damn thing; it was created out of the tower when it fell and I don't see how its a bad thing that a lot of people drew inspiration from it, especially after what had happened.
I don't know but when I read this, it makes me feel like a lot of people take it too far and are being as bad as the nutjobs they complain about. Remember when people used to complain about Christians getting upset over seeing Wiccan symbols on the headstones of soldiers and everyone thought that was being stupid? Its the same sentiment here but from the other side, making the entire argument look rather hypocritical to me.

Permalink Reply by Darkness Unlimited* on December 21, 2011 at 7:46am Sooo, you're equating a Black person being beaten by racist cops to abunch of damned christians dying on IXXI? Where on Earth is the connection?
Permalink Reply by kifaru on December 21, 2011 at 10:13am Come on, Damos. Surely you will admit Christians are people and people whose lives have just as much value as the victims of 9/11?
Permalink Reply by Darkness Unlimited* on December 21, 2011 at 2:51pm Ok, there was once a time when i was NOT willing to concede that christians were in fact human. Rather, sub-human parasites void of all possible worth and positive usefulness.
I NOW feel that christianity is itself something of a communicable disease that infects its host with a particular level of ferocity unmatched by any actual illness.
