... the other Black experience

Hello.

I damn near cried when I came to visit this message board. I was on the internet looking for stuff on Mexican-American history and culture. I came to www.brownpride.com and read comments. I can't fucking believe how whitewashed and racist some Latinos are...

They a bunch of kids talking tough shit from behind a computer...fuck any group of people like that in my opinion. Me personally I don't have any problems with latinos and they ain't give me no problems. They were even brutally honest about shit I wasn't even aware of (like their even was tensions between black and brown.) So why hate on people you don't know? (The fact they talking shit on-line i just even more...lulz.)
Also, by the looks of it, not many people visit that sight (not saying we should just ignore it.) so again, for me no historical context and whatnot, pure and simply: You hate me, well, nigga who said I liked you? (This could be towards anybody black, brown, white, etc.)

I do however, see a voice of reason on these threads

"i'm half Mexican and half white and when I was growing up I had a black friend. My dad told me that I could not be friends with her anymore. No explanation. I still, all of these years later, feel like a complete jerk for telling this girl that I couldn't hang out with her because she was black. I was a kid, I didn't know better, and my mom said something to my dad but she was afraid of him at that time so nothing changed but I am sure I really hurt that girl.

This was a long time ago, probably before most of you were born, so it makes me sad to see that people are still like this. You can try to explain it within the reference of current events, but it goes back much further than that. And it continues because people let it." http://boards.brownpride.com/showthread.php/why-do-mexicans-63073p2...

Then there's the simple explination

"in LA it has to do with the whole gang culture. it's not mexicans but ese's, all that stuff trickles down from the prison system. you got certain areas where it isn't as bad... mainly the southside. my homie is from one of the biggest blood gangs in inglewood and he told me that they grew up with the 13's and it was all good. they used to look out for one another but then word came back from the pen that the bloods in the wood had the green light. the older heads didn't trip but the youngsters started wildin out."

Oh yeah, read Black-power's post on page two...lol Brotha went in on Internet "Raza" LOL.
I hear you. It just puzzles me that some Latinos have the audacity to think this way.
Its the right if Latinos to think in a cultural-centric fashion, and in a diplomatic way, we should respect and uphold their differences, understanding their unique predominantly Spanish-Amerind heritage. But we also have the responsibility to keep them and their record straight where and when involves the interaction and credit of us as African people.

Its fine if they want to be assertive about their heritage, but not when they condescend.

The problem in the world is that people want to knock us for being African AND confident when we mainly only knock people for being unfair.

Hypocrisy that even Latinos need to be kept straight on. That's why African-Americans need to keep the record straight in order to fight that European multilingual slant.

who are they to think they are higher than any other minority? please...no one is better than me esp if they are busy mopping floors, baking pizzas, washing dishes, or working in a sweat shop for a living. some nerve.
The work one does has nothing to do with their quality of character--our own ancestors have proven that wrong especially after historically being judged by whites on it. My grandmother and her sisters did that sort of work in the homes of rich white Ohioans during the days of segregation, but they managed to raise intelligent daughters who served in the military, attained higher education and started families of their own.

The issue lies in that although we are all apart of the same political infrastructural body (the usa), but we're too busy competing and weighing differences, rather than using them for our mutual benefit.

...yeah fuck what she said. bullshit.

anyway,
i was clicking around and found this gem:
"spain is what you need to think about fuck africa"
lmao! granted the guy who posted this has enough neg rep to be in the red so the folk on that board don't like him either.
That's upsetting. I am privilege to have friends of the Latino culture, yet non of us can understand the
on going strife between "Blacks & Browns". More overly I've never seen the purpose in doing
anyones culture. I asked my friend once (who is cuban) what's the deal between Latinos and African Americans?
He said not all of us are in the "unspoken" club of the black vs. brown rivalry(mind you I didn't even know such a thing existed) but apparently so. Although he wasn't to fond of it, he has people in he's family who, as he put just didn't
care for "black people". He had know idea why, but he asked one of his fam and they told him that Blacks are the biggest imitators of any culture, and that we didn't really have our own identity.... I don't disagree totally, BUT, that's no reason to be waring with each other, especially if we're just the darker or lighter versions of each other....
This is nothing new to me IMO. There have always been divisions between black Americans and immigrants of colour. Many of them believe the hype that we don't take advantage of everything America has to offer. I think we should focus on uniting with each other first.
Well not all latinos are immigrants. To me this is has the same origin as some of the other problems we are experiencing.: trickle down from prison culture.

Well, I wasn't speaking about just Latinos (or in this case Mexican-Americans), but people from other parts of the world as well (whether newly arrived, first generation American etc.)...Some of it may have to do with prison culture, but most of it isn't. I've heard of friends experience negative encounters with other POC's in places such as grad school. Here in NY, there's quite a bit of tension between Black Americans and Dominicans (outside the hair salon, that is). Back in my mom's day, it was Blacks vs. Puerto Ricans, so that's why I say it's not that new to me.
this is totally blown out of proportion & decontextuallized. while it's true that racism exists everywhere in this country FROM ALL SIDES & mexicans/central/south americans are less likely to african ancestors & more likely to have native ancestors. you can't really talk about the whole culture from some message board postings from some ignorant fools.

i'm puerto rican and white. we have mad black people in our family - all puerto ricans do. so do most caribbean latin american people. also since we (as a people) moved to the "mainland" blacks and latinos live in the same neighborhoods (at least on the east coast). we marry each other, raise each others kids, goto school together, give our kids names from each other's languages. like it or not for all the racists, we're becoming one.

yeah there's plenty of racism in america, but there's plenty of people trying to heal it, too. go back to brownpride.com & look at the left hand side towards the bottom. you'll find a link to a page called afrolatinos. i know that kid personally - he's an independent producer that self-financed a documentary on communities from the african diaspora in latin american countries. his name is renzo devia & used to direct/produce a show called "american latino".

easy example from the black community - sensitive white people could just as easily look at the comedy/social commentary of great comedians like richard pryor, chris rock, katt williams, paul mooney & dick gregory & call it "racist". i don't - i love to look at serious things from another angle, but my father (for instance) draws the line. i've heard each of them talk about latinos at one time or another, too.

the one guy was talking about the prison system perpetuates the race struggle & that is true. when some of ou soldiers get put into a do or die situation, it's usually back to the color lines in prisons. when those people get out of jail , a lot of times the maintain those attitudes & those are the peole that run the streets. those are also the people that make headlines when ignorant shit goes down & it happens from each racial group. for some reason, those guys are still the tough guys that kids love to emulate. & the bullshit cycle continues...

i'm sorry for our children, too. you sound like an instrument of change, i'm an agent of change, too. my kids are going to grown up wide open, just make sure your daughter does, too & we'll have this shit licked inna couple generations!
