AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

If you are present at a Black History program and they only mention slavery, please stop the show and take some time out of your day to ....slap the $hit out of the moderator. Slavery was a very relevant, but small part of our incredible history. Peace 2 the Kings and Queens.

True
Word!!
I agree. So what shall we discuss it?
We should discuss African prescence in what is now referred to as North America before the "invasion"....They Came Before Columbus by Dr. Ivan Van Sertima would be a good book as a reference. I think it would be more productive to explore the reasons for why we as a people react/behave/gravitate towards some of the activities and habits that we have formed.....Willie Lynch set some of the behaviors into motion. There are also many positve inventors, kings, pharos, biblical figures (if you're into that), etc, etc. Overall, I think that we as a people could strategically influence our living conditions/mentality by focusing on the root of WHY we are in the conditions that we are in, and reversing the contributing factors to yield a more positive outcome. Know wut I'm sayin Folk?

****I am convinced that if we would do THIS for 28 days every year for the next 3-5 years, It would change a whole lotta ish*****

Perhaps I was a bit to harsh...But out of all the Pan African scholars John Henrik Clarke is by far the the most reputable. No conspiracy theories, melanin pseudoscience, just straight facts.

mmhm.
Sounds good to me....i'll pick it up. I'm just sayin'.....telling your kids that they granpappy use to be in chains and that yo granmoms was raped.....(shit like that) is not helping out. AND......I believe that important information is glossed over and omitted (intentionally in my opinion). If there must be some benefit to be inspired to cheat/deprive/omit.....or a Threat.?. What do you think?
History is what actually happened that you know about or that was taught to you by scholars and also by people in your family or community. That's gonna include slavery because it happened, but it should also include EVERYTHING else that is good too. I really, really like John Henrik Clarke's information. He was so awesome. What he had to teach was inclusive of slavery happenings but not just that, he also had a lot to teach about some really important happenings and discoveries that a lot of us can be proud of. And we are the current generations, from the 1960's on to now the early 2000's, Black History needs to include the Black Present. Frankly, I see what all the interesting hardworking AfroPunks are doing in their lives as part of Black History and Black Future too. The young "alternative" black folks built upon the past as well as doing somethings completely NEW and powerful for themselves and are an inspiration to all Black folks who know about them and their actions.
True Rosenda and I can thank some of my elementary and middle school teachers for engaging us into Black History in a more creative way which, excuse the narm, made it not only educational but fun as well. In fourth grade, we gave projects about famous African-Americans but as a requirement we were to DRESS up and ACT as if we WERE them. (I was Bessie Coleman) It was a very interesting twist and I can easily say it was the most creative thing I have seen done in a school with black history.

Of course, this died down when I got through the latter parts of middle and high school. In those grades, Black History was more like a passing mention in the school; we knew it was happening but we never did anything. To be fair, its not like any other 'national holiday' got any better treatment seeing as our 'alternative' high school setting (and our Jehovah Witness vice and then later HEAD PRINCIPAL) didn't allow us to 'celebrate' crap anyway...but come on, why the hell lump Black History Month into that as well?

But whatever, high school is pass me now and as so many have said before, I want to see BHM become something more than a month long reminder that;

(in deep, so SERIOUS VOICE) The AFRICANS were brought over in slave ships!

or

(in soft SERIOUS VOICE) Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr was the front runner for the Civil Rights Movement.

Hey, this is what some people SAY....and that's IT.

There is so much history that has been untapped and its kind of sad to see it pushed aside for more 'traditional' (and in my opinion often regurgitated) 'facts' that even an unborn baby knows. Again, as Rosenda said, we need to known (MORE) of our history but we should also know about the people now who are paving the way. Just because its called HISTORY doesn't mean that everything that is talked about has to be 100s of years old. :)
