AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

I hate the fucking media! Every popular news program is calling it Obama's Katrina. WFT??!!! I'm so sick of this shit! Sea turtles and birds and every other creature in ocean is slowly suffocating to death because of corporate greed that will never be punished and our indifference. Ecosystems will never be the same. Ride a bike for god sakes! I bet if BP executives were faced with losing their jobs and prison time the pipe would be fixed by now. Really. Something has to change. I think my head is gonna explode! Are people blind???!! Am I the only one who feels this way?!!

Every popular news program is calling it Obama's Katrina.

It pretty much "is". Like Bush, it's all of a sudden Obama's fault this happened, and yet, the idiots in charge of the damn thing we're pre-warned before time that something could happened. But nooooo, these people rather "save money" then worry about consequences that could effect the populace and environment. Well, it has happened and those idiots are looking dumbfounded. Unfortunately, the execs are never going to get anything coming to them. As always.

It is Obama's Katrina and in some respects it is worse because there don't seem to be any great solutions. Even if Oprah, John Travolta, and Harry Connick went to the gulf, they couldn't stop the oil.
^^

Yep. It is (thus far) what'll be one of the defining catastrophes of his current term; he's not being faulted for the spill so much as being pressured to make swift and heavy-handed political gestures. He certainly can't show up at a press conference and tell the people that it's "not his mess to clean up." Any move he makes is likely to invite criticism, but he's got to consider damage control and political sentiments that won't work in his favor. Besides, BP's been airing these apologetic commercials for the last couple of weeks, vowing to stay until the spill is cleaned up. They're playing the part as they should; Obama's gonna need to step his game up if BP's supposed to end up looking like the bad guys.

As far as BP goes, they haven't done anything that surprised me as of yet, other than the stipends they're paying to fishermen ($2500 a month, I believe) "until the spill is cleaned up". Underestimations/understatements aside, they're playing the right cards by being pro-active in their redemption -- they're definitely trying to do the "smart capitalist" thing. If anyone at BP were facing a prison term, it would have to be under vastly different circumstances than this.

As far as Louisiana goes ... our state treasurer brought his concerns to Gov. Jindal about BP possibly filing for bankruptcy to minimize their losses. I haven't heard anything on BP's end in response to those concerns, but I don't know how long they expect to keep sending payouts on claims...
Well at least we know why everybody is fighting over that piece of dirt. Minerals
!
( and no I don't mean soda Nigerians!)

Obama screwed the pooch by agreeing to allow more deep water oil drilling about a month before the oil rig in the gulf caught fire and sank. He explained that decision by saying it was the only way to get Congress to approve his proposed energy policy that leaned more towards renewables. He looked at the decison as a compromise while most progressives and lefties (like myself) looked at it as a sellout to big oil & coal.
He's in a hard spot. The company that he wants to backslap with fines and penalties to appease the American people are the only ones with the technology to plug the leaking well. If I were a BP exec seeing the President twist in the wind while motherfucking me at the same time, I'd tell those guys with the robotic subs to take every safety break and proceed with extreme caution. 'Cause the longer it takes to fix that well, the worse off my biggest critic is faring. Oh, did anyone notice that the Afghanistan conflict is a fucking mess too?
Nope, the Soviets knew about them too. The powers that be are just letting us know that this has been in the works for decades. I agree we should get out but sometimes the game is about making sure someone else doesn't get the gold even if it has little or no value to you.

My understanding was the mineral deposits were a new discovery? We've been over in that pit since just after 9/11 and it's still a pit. Let the Taliban have it - especially since our allies in Pakistan are funding them.
cut whatever deals we can with foreign governments to get the shit fixed.
^^^^^ that is so depressing.
why is everything so fucking stupid?

obama shouldn't've said the buck stops w/ him and that he takes responsibility so early on.
that's when i said WTF does the federal gov't have to do w/ BP and Deepwater Horizon's oil spill?
also people shouldn't be boycotting BP if you give a shit about the ppl who are filing claims against them and want them to get their money back. ha.

also i'm really tired of the outrage towards individuals or BP itself by politicians. just solve the fucking problem now and don't stand in the way or get your quote on record. everyone is pissed.

and honestly, i'm not surprised we don't have a safety-driven culture in most companies and in our government.

BP also runs off shore drilling sites in the Baltic Sea their safety standards and record out there are supposedly great. Hayworth came up w/ the baltic sea drilling group--he's an engineer or something, but obv a total douche as a ceo (lol). Anyway--according to my mother who worked as an auditor for Amoco and then BP, the US operations in off shore drilling had always had problems, but the european drilling sites were always so much better. I think it's the operators that BP contracts--even though the buck stops w/ BP since they pay for everything in the end, transocean drilling or whatever seem to be the common denominator (and it really, really pisses me off that the drilling contractors already have their asses covered--so really BP took all the risk but made the most money as well).

Kicking the can down the road and weak regulatory government agencies and stupid loopholes and just general myopia of EVERYBODY and the lack of political will 98% of the fucking time is ANNOYING AS FUCK.

...and, I'm at the point where I don't even know or think that even the epic destruction of the Gulf Coast will change anything. shit's broken in america... :(
since i dont have a hybrid yet....
I was always a fan of Amoco and would only use BP in my car.
what is the EPA role in this mess. do they just collect samples or do the have some technology to help stop the leak?
of all places to have an oil spill?
why does America need help fixing this? NPR say BP didnt cut the pipe right so they cant plug the hole all the way?
see what happens when obama play by the rules, he is the only one try to stomp out the bag of shit on the door step.
only in america
Now do we understand why pessimistic apathy is entropic?

Unfortunately it does not matter what Obama says or does at this point . . there is so much ignorance surrounding this oil spill disaster that there simply is no clear answer or solution. I am sure if the government and/or BP would have fixed the the problem by now if that was possible. All we need to do is take a look at what happened 31 years ago to be reminded of what to or not to expect.
Yes! People are very blind. This sooo isn't Obamas' Katrina, how absurd! Katrina was a NATURAL disaster, hello!

This is more like Obamas' Chernobyl.

Like majority of news media outlets, wether independent or major: Bias. Real noticeable bias.
