educate them if you've got the energy for it. if they're defensive and even hint at you being too sensitive, put them in whatever category racist white friends go in. really, you can be civil w/ people, but if they don't get why you're feeling or thinking a certain way and get stupidly defensive about it--you and them prolly won't stay friends for long... regardless of the issue.
LesYpersound is right.

As a white dude I can understand them being ignorant of things from time to time but if you explain things to them and they say you're wrong, they probably won't change without some serious reeducation and that is almost never as fun as it sounds.
I wasn't trying to offend anyone. I just notice it from time to time that some things aren't understood as well as it should be. But I really don't see it as a color thing. I wish it would all get thrown out the window. I guess it goes back on my original statement. Some people still make color a big issue and it's not. Everybody is always looking for something to be blamed... I just don't know anymore, I'm just as guilty. i brought the subject up. Well....?

White friends, white passing friends. I don't expect them to ever really get it unless they are placed in unusual situations that give them unique insight.

There was an incident where I hit a prius and I had a friend that looked extremely white with me. He went got out of the car first. The owner of the prius that he was the person that hit her car. She was going to let the dent slide in exchange for $100.00.

When I came out and spoke to her suddenly we have to exchange insurance and she has to get her car fixed in a bodyshop. From $100.00 to $980.00 bucks.

In the back were two friends, one a white male. If he hadn't been there he would have never believed it.

When I was in college for a long time I hated knowing that I was an official ambassador of the black race to other students and even some of my professors. What do I mean? I mean I became aware very quickly that I would be the first live black female many of these students would be interacting with.

For me the most important thing to remember is this:
Media really messed with the image of what it is to be black in America for anyone and everyone that watches it globally.

People who are apart of the entertainment industry REFUSE to expose their children to it. They know the damaging effects of these programs. Film schools teach not to trust anything that comes on that magically tele or silver screen. Its fantasy. Rappers never let their children listen to rap music. They send their kids to schools where they will get kicked out if they utter one curse word.

And yet the only people who do not know or who do not take these actions seriously are the masses that eat up entertainment like pigs to slop.

Outside of the prius incident, my few white friends that understand when racists stuff happens to me are also the ones that don't take the media seriously. This means they don't see stereotypes as accurate representations of society. They see people for who they are. They see things for what they are.

And seeing things for what they are means being aware that 400 years of justifying inequality and bondage using Christianity and racial pseudo science just does not stop when the shackles slip off. It transforms into something even more evil, stealth, and permeating. Something that infects every single thing you touch, you breathe, you desire.

Your white friends that still do not get it when racists stuff happens are enjoying the benefits of a society that used free labor to establish a world for their race to enjoy today.

You can not expect most of your white friends to be sympathetic or understanding when the majority of ALL people, regardless of color, do not have the capacity to understand what the hell is going on in the world around them.

Your white friends probably think you are whining your ass off by making things a big deal. If they agree something racist is occurring they wish for you to suck it up and "Be strong. Don't pay any attention to so and so." because the sooner you stop talking about it the sooner you stop making them feel bad for reminding them that when they have a bad day, they still are thankful that they are not black.
yeah my one friend is always ranting about how much she hates ghetto people and their accents and how loud and stupid they are, but she doesnt think she's racist
my whtie friend's mother left notes in Spanish for the landscapers to not touch her flowers please... THEY WERE ROMANI.
arabs=muslims=terrorists=bad

just so much shit they dont even understand.
