Dolores Davies, a UCSD library spokeswoman, said Monday that Audrey Geisel, the author’s widow, asked that the event be called off this year because of the racial unrest.
“It was at her request that we cancel the party,” Davies said. “We wanted to honor Ms. Geisel’s wishes.”
Racial tensions exploded at UCSD in the wake of an off-campus party on Presidents Day intended to mock Black History Month. Called the “Compton Cookout,” participants where urged to dress “ghetto” and
promote racial
stereotypes.
The situation was inflamed several days later when racially insensitive language was reportedly used on a student-run television program. Last week, a noose was discovered hanging on a light fixture
at UCSD’s Geisel Library.
The incidents prompted demonstrations on campus and impassioned pleas by black students, who make up less than 2 percent of the student body, for administrators to improve safety and bolster diversity.
Geisel, who died in La Jolla in 1991, published more than five dozen children’s books, including “The Cat in the Hat,” “Green Eggs and Ham” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
UCSD’s Geisel Library is named after the author and his wife.

Here we go again. Is it just me or are the white folk collectively losing their mind publicly. Most minorities already know we haven't reached the promise land in terms of racial relations in this country. But I'm noticing more and more incidences. I guess its for the best, I'd rather outright racism then the veiled enlightened, pseudo progressive society we seem to be operating under. I just think its interesting that Obamas Prez and no everyone ones on a larger scale showing their true colors. This and other incidences undermine the theory that education will eradicate racism, these kids are the future. Seems to me that their being educated to continue the disenfranchisement of people of color. They dont want to change because the current system benefits them. The whole situation is ironic because Dr. Seuss himself had a couple of racist anti Asian cartoons too.

The pendulum is just starting to swing the other way. It's no big deal and besides black people are racist too. There are plenty of us who feel justified in saying and doing racist stuff and are mad when we are called on it. Some black folks will throw up the perpetual victim flag and scream they got a right to say racist stuff. What we got to do is make sure we are doing everything we can to build our communities and support each other in success and not abandon our community when we get some success.

Very true, Cindy. It seems like since Obama's election, a lot of white people are feeling like their genetically pristine worlds are crumbling, and they have to throw tantrums and lash out at us and Latinos. Even though they're in charge of most businesses, most media and nearly all branches of government on state levels, they feel disenfranchised. Seems like we're going to have a lot more to worry about than reading festivals being canceled.

I'm from San diego and yea the place is pretty racist. Go to the Southern Poverty Law Center website and you'll find a shitload of hate groups registered in San Diego County.
In my high school, there were tons of race riots during the 90s. Even when I went to college, I found that my own professors perpetuated it. My last semester, I was quite busy working for my Japanese language professor and missed an elective linguistics class. The professor of it--a fat white Jewish zionist of a guy--made a sly remark, "You didn't come to class the other day. I thought you might have been apart of that drug bust." I bit my tongue on that one. I apparently went to party school SDSU in which asian and white kids get drunk and go to class high all the fucking time. But I got accosted by my retard professor, when I was one of the most exemplary undergrads in his class. WTF. I switched the class to credit/ no credit, cause it was an interesting elective made pointless by a pointless professor.
San Diego is racist. We'd have to hold Afro-Punk in that city every year for ten years to change it. And don't get so caught up in your "craker" calling cause there are plenty of asians who are light enough too. YCSD is mostly asian-american and they take a shitload of responsibility for that garbage too. asian kids will be your friend, egg you on into negro behavior and then sell you out. white kids ust wont talk to you. but to both, youre not african anything to them--youre just your skin color.
(p.s. there are exceptions, but theyre NOT very proactive in correcting theyre racist peers)

How about on the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor...Black kids dress up as Priests, Boy scout troop leaders (In white face of course) and other sexual deviants while pretending to snort various prescription pills???

Its interesting that people of color always have to 'relax' dont take things personally when this is blatant hypocrisy. We including all people of color could not have a party like that and not see the inside of a jail cell. They publicized it, had the party, and got away scot free. Could my black ass have a anti white people party, advertise it on Facebook, and skip on home. History shows anytime black people have congregated period, it does not matter what the occasion was we got a beat down or were arrested. Black Panther Movement, Nation of Islam Movement, Non Violent Protesting, Sit ins, Jena 6, Move 9, little kids cant go to the fuckin pool with out there being a rucus. But he should chill, why is he all upset, "nigga relax", why? so the white folk can be in their comfort zone 24/7. I wanna be in my comfort zone too, their putting nooses on doors. First you do that, you get away with, then you start hanging people. And they'll get away with that too. This is not some back in the day phenomenon, they still do it today. The KKK is able to walk around and I've never seen a media expose on them or any FBI intensive investigation. Has anyone ever heard of COINTEL PRO. you're right about san diego, felipe, cause when i was in college i was told by folks i trust that the KKK was still active in the city of oceanside at the time. so the first time i went to san diego with just friends in the late 80s, i was scared shitless when we drove through oceanside.
