AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

Has anyone else noticed how downright racist and biased hipsters can be? They are rapidly taking over brooklyn ny I even saw a ton at afropunk last summer. They see a minority and either cross the street or walk fast. When they get on the train they wont sit next to you....they build cafes next to bodegas and treat the original residents a lil diff. I always get an uneasy elitist vibe from them. The train by my house is now full of snotty starbucks holding, deer hoof listening people who raid the corner store for tofu chips and petition to shut down hiphop venues in the neighborhood. The fuck? Its so annoying. Anyone else notice this

HA!

Oh, its the same way in Chicago. Trustfund babies moving into the slums of the city just to bug their parents. They dress like they make minimum wage, then they pull out the latest iPhone. Severe fail.

I will say this though:

I have never encountered any racist hipsters over here. Or if I had, I was completely oblivious to it.

I hate how they invaded Logan Square and Pilsen. Them moving there has jacked the rent up :/ Fuckin' loved that area. The graffiti  was always my inspiration in my sketches.

One of the reasons for my distaste for 'hipsters' is how they adhere themselves to issues and causes not because they are right but because its the fashionable thing to do, as if they are expecting to get their asses kicked for having their picture being taken doing one good cause.

The entire mindset is condesending to me because they treat this shit like its a pet to them. Living in old neighborhoods, going to thift stores, and other things because its cool. For a lot of us, we had to do this shit because it was the only thing we could do at the time and it pisses me off to no end that these assholes act as if they created this lifestyle and because they're living it, it therefor makes it right and in.

Fuck them; the hipster attitude has seeped too far into many venues and has made everything bland.

I also find it ironic that most hipster shit is expensive as hell. If the entire point of being a hipster was to embrace things that are old or WHATEVER the hell they say, why the fuck are they marketing things to such an exclusive crowd?

Don't answer that, I already did myself. @_@

Same thing is happening where I live in West Oakland, California.  For those that don't know Oakland is where all the black people in the Bay Area of northern California live but there are some yuppie/hipster areas but now they want it all. Oakland is the scary city San Franciscans won't dare venture across the bridge for but now it's 'cool' too live in the ghetto.  They choose to live in a low-income nieghborhood take housing from people that actually can't afford to live else where.  Yet they never converse with the primarily black neighbors, stay huddled in their fenced houses yet claim their West Oakland neighborhood with pride to other white people.  They always travel in groups and totally avoid the original residents.

I told someone once how I didn't like the drug dealers and junkies that hang out on my block and their response was:  Well the white people are moving into that area so it won't be so bad.  My jaw nearly hit the floor.  WTF!  I don't want rich white people gentrifying my neighborhood, I simply don't want the bad element.  White people sell and do drugs too.

Once I made a t-shirt that said: Gentrification Sucks (on the front) This means you! (on the back) You have no idea how many hipsters came up to me and told me they 'loved' my shirt.  I don't think I can roll my eyes far back enough.

OMG yes!

My mother and I were discussing how a lot of areas that are sometimes deemed to be in low income areas have been taken up by new developers to be turned into 'fashionable and hip' apparetments that a lot of people who do need housing in the area will never be able to afford. Hell, I can't even afford it and I live in a slightly older neighborhood that is some distance away from the downtown/metropolitian area.

Its sick if you ask me because of the reasoning behind all of this; there is so much talk about how areas like this need to be revitilized but it never seems to be done in the intrest of the people who are already there and need the help. With each new plan for appartments, I don't see that much being done for the houses that aren't that many yards away from them. The entire thing sticks out like a sore thumb; we have the low income families on one side but then we have these other hipsters right behind them who's only real contribution to the neighborhood is how much they spend at the bars on Saturday nights.

At times I am split in my thinking of how these plans are being done; on one side, I think there is a lot of personal responsiblity that needs to be taken to cleaning up neighborhoods. We can't always wait for someone else to do it for us. On the other hand, its just so sicken how divided these 'clean ups' and hipster areas can be. They aren't cleaning up to make the entire neighborhood better; they're doing it to make their little areas nice and pristine for THEMSELVES. As I stated in my first post, these are vanity causes because they're doing it just to make a false impression. If they were as 'down' as they are on improving people, embracing frugal lifestyles, and other things, they wouldn't just save this conveniences for themselves but everyone they share the neighborhood with. That means actually supporting local shops instead of replacing them with uber-expensive outlets that are just fronts, actually supporting community areas and clean up, not just little corners where they hang out at, and most importantly stop hiding behind their attitudes and pretending that they still aren't racist.

You see that is what is bothering me. It doesn't help that the original residents don't make an effort to speak up and take part in neighborhood meetings. There will only be a change if we make an attempt to, but most are just breezing by and complaining but doing nothing. On top of that we are feeding the fact that we aren't worth having a voice by keeping our streets filthy, supporting dirty bodegas, and giving money to every cheap ass 99 cent store with owners who don't care about the community. Someone else steps in and makes improvements while we just watch.

Regardless however, these hipster people should get to know the residents and stop acting like they own the place. We both live in this city together now. It's crazy cuz my train line goes straight through the hood...first a mainly west indian neighborhood where I live...then african american...then hispanic...then manhattan. Now it's like straight hipsters all the way till you get to my part of town....eventually they will get there but I pray they don't. Just six stops away from the other suddenly 'cool' hoods to live in.

I second Christina my fashionable friend, hipster holocaust.

It's the only way.

Or -

start dressing like hipsters ourselves and "gentrify their scene" with some COLOR!

i think it just might be the area cuz alot of hipsters in the south are straight. the scene is pretty mixed out here especially in my small town. i think it's because we all wanna see our downtown thrive and shit. most of the hipsters i run into out here if they're making music are mixing genres so to hear shuttin down hip hop venues is jus weird to me. at most the hipsters here jus hate sucky hip hop which we all know exists.
Hipsters are all up and through Austin. They take over EVERYTHING. The east side of Austin are totally being gentrified and now the poor folks that live east can't afford to live east. They have also taken over clubs. There is one bar that was predominantly a queer hang out and the hipsters with their musty armpits, ugly shoes, dirty tshirts, high-waisted daisy dukes and mammel toe (camel toe for guys) have totally taken over.

i just think people are annoying in general. no matter what label they conform to.

Does anyone else agree that racism/self race hate was 'created' to keep people from unifying and to keep some "higher authority" (some government branch) as a mediator?
I absolutely agree with you. But i don't think that it was really created, because some people are either affraid or haughty about what they do not know. However it is USED to divide.
