AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

when i think of hot topic, i think, mass produced & overpriced. Void of creativity and filled to the brim with advertisements, i hate to say it but Hot Topic is NOT punk, nor is it goth, or even emo at this point. I use to love hot topic when i was younger, it was the closest thing to punk i had ever seen up close. The creepy $20.00 velour posters and light up skull lamps made me feel like i was right at home. I use to love to look at all the pretty nail polish with glittery names like "bruise purple" and "toxic green". And the shoes! I LIVED for those black and white checkered Vans!!! However now the store has lost all its glory, and im sitting in a store with a  bunch of aeropostle wearing ghetto bitches who are looking for a studded rainbow belt and a baby tee with hello kitty on it thinking " Was hot topic always this poser-ish or has something changed?" Hot topic has always been lame. The punk movement is not something you can make up in factory filled with hungry children from foreign countries! Its not something that can be sold to any rich, fat, american child who thinks that because they have a piercing and a couple of black tee shirts on them with jack skellington or the joker from batman on them that they are punk. Isn't a part of being punk about doing your own thing? About being your own person? About going against the media! I mean friggin HELLO KITTY? Hot topic is turning people into mindless media slaves and taking their money too!!! That crappy ass store is friggin expensive as HeLL!! And the music gets more and more boring and mainstream-y. Panic at the Disco? Britney Spears is Harder than that shit! Hot topic has turned a genuine movement into the best source of advertising i have seen since commercials. Think about it.

Jack Skellington shirts = higher purchases of The Nightmare before Christmas

Little arm bands with that "Fred" guy from Youtube = higher views on fred's channels

Posters of Green Day = higher Green Day album sales

Its perfect. You become a walking advertisement and they never have to pay you for it!

Bottom Line is this: Hot topic is LAME! Some greedy executive is laughing his rich ass off while he charges you an arm and a leg for a bunch of cheap lame t shirts with disney characters, mouthless kittens, and snarky comments on them. Millions of kids right now are clutching their twilight books (RETARDS), wearing their their favorite Green day tee shirt and watching "The corpse Bride" for the 11th time this week. and i just think that is really sad.

Hot Topic has always been corporate owned and about the dollar first and foremost. It's pretty much always been the opposite of punk..lol.
I used to really dig Hot Topic as a kid. And I honestly don't feel like it has changed all that much--it has always been commercial. At the time, It was the only place where I could find black pleather pants, care bears, sailor moon action figures, Kangol hats, temporary hair streaks, and bad ass sterling silver jewelry all in one place--a young girl's paradise. And for that, it will always hold a special place in my heart. I remember wanting to be as "free" as the cool kids that worked there. After a few years the novelty of it wore off and I wouldn't be caught dead there.

You used to love the store, but now you don't. The kids that go there now are probably just like you were at the time you were stoked on it. It was the same store all the time. It's even traded on the Nasdaq.

It's best to treat people the way you want to be treated. Every person, no matter how cool they think they are, was a kid who heard about that one band or style of music and was curious at one time. Beyond that, people can choose to shop or not shop there. I'm waaay out of their demographic anyway.

When Marylin Manson was in his Antichrist Superstar phase they had tons of NICE capes that would have made even Blacula take notice. When he came out with that gray album (mechanical animals?) and changed his style, I went down there to see if they had any capes on blowout/closeout. The people that worked there looked at me like I was crazy and denied ever carrying the capes in question.
Hmmm, now that main photo actually looks like it came straight out of Aero.

hot topic is pretty lame imo. cheap clothes that fall apart in no time. trash and vaudeville in NYC is awesome but they are expensive! been around since 70s i believe. a band tee or jeans will not come cheap my friend. we are talkin nearly 100 for pants. but its a cool ass store tho. if you never been peep below..
space jams you mean the purple eights? my sister bought those. i have the play offs i payed $80 my feet are small lol...i dont even wear them but they are cute! lol.

yeah but behind that crap, they're still selling tripps and things like that. I don't know what they're getting at by going after that Neo-Hippie and Hipster image, don't hipsters but from the thrift store or either a high priced Urban Outfitters.
I don't see why people get down on those guys, it's no more worse than a hip-hopper going to a DTLR and buying a $200 dollar pair of useless Air Jordans, my sister went and got a pair of those Space Jams, and she damn near never wears the things. My shoes usually range anywhere from $20 to $50, I'm not dropping what can basically buy me a Wii, and a game to go with it, on a pair of shoes.
my parents never allowed me to wear jordans or any expensive kicks in hs. when i got to college i bought em for the hell of it to see what i was missing...yet never wore em. i like to look at it tho lol. i dont really wear sneakers anyway except one pair of yellow lace up vans or my sisters dirty old converse once in a while. im a girly girl i like boots n shoesies hehe.

yeah, what ever they call em, lol. I haven't had a pair of Jordans since I was sixteen, I didn't wear them either.
I like their stuff as a kid and as a slightly older kid. Not going to be uppity about it anymore. I was totally on the "it's for posers!" bandwagon a few years ago abut eh, you like what you like- kids aren't born with the innate knowledge of why to hate anything that is a coorp or how it isn't punk and most don't care, they just want to express themselves. I like star shaped earrings and their incense. I also found a really cute ruffle micro mini for $5 on the clearance rack. And I saw this neat Tripp commander's jacket for like $18 (usually like $55).
Don't worry i know full and well that the clothing you wear doesn't mean anything about you. i actually don't even dress punk at all. i shop at Macy's. and i, at first glance don't look anything like a stereotypical punk. but i do love the music. And i agree with the ideas that go along with it. Everyone likes Hot topic in their youth. I know i did. But when they start getting all snobby with that punker-than-thou shit because im not dressed like i'm a punk, i feel the need to point these things out.

Yeah for some kids who may really be into punk, maybe just starters, places like hot topic is the only place for the them to go, but just like I said in another thread, consumerism is consumerism, if you aren't making by yourself complete scratch, then shut up. It doesn't matter if it comes from hot topic or you're local thrift store, you're still using the DOLLAR and thats all that matters to make you a consumer, you're probably not an impulse consumer, but you're a consumer.
I mean, if the look is what makes you punk anyway, the stereotypical punk. it's the attitude, not the way you dress. I mean yeah, you have your fair share of "fakers" or "posers" AvrilXBlink 182 style punks walking in there. but is it really trying to be punk or goth anymore? I read somewhere that they are actually moving out of the punk, goth, emo territory on dark colors and read, into the more plain Alt realm, where they sell more neutral color shit, and it's more understandable since the whole emo thing is dead/dying, and the whole dance and Indie thing is looking to be the 2010s trend of choice(at least for the early half).

I wouldn't call my self punk, even though I love the ideology and thats why I'm here, pretty much a pussy, but I rather not be a hippy(because in my eyes they never got shit done).

I rather someone attack this American Eagle, Hollister, Aero bullshit that's going on, instead of hot topic which is probably the most unique and interesting thing in the mall always standing besides a Spencers. You're still seen as a weirdo for walking into a hot topic by the "normal" people.

This is the site as currently is.
Hahaha I only recently noticed the ghetto kids in hot topic thing about a year ago. I've always loathed that store, but didn't really get into clothes til fairly recently. I'm a slave to Urban Outfitters and American apparal, and get called hipster alot. Otherwise its the thrift stores and online shopping for me. I wouldn't be caught dead in HT.
What the fuck planet are you living on? It's been the "Goth Gap" since its inception.
Meh, i treat it as any other store; i go in there and if i like it i buy it. I was all about it when i was 17 like 'ZOMGZ IT'S SOOO0O0O000 DIFFRNT!!!!11' but then, yes, i realized the posertude of its ways. So I stopped going. Then about two years ago i thought 'wait, why the fuck am i letting a bunch of poser queers keep me from doin somethin/goin somewhere i might like?' So there's that. Most of their stuff is way juvenile, though, and what worked when i was 17 does not work now that i'm 26.
