AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

when i think of hot topic, i think, mass produced & overpriced. Void of creativity and filled to the brim with advertisements, i hate to say it but Hot Topic is NOT punk, nor is it goth, or even emo at this point. I use to love hot topic when i was younger, it was the closest thing to punk i had ever seen up close. The creepy $20.00 velour posters and light up skull lamps made me feel like i was right at home. I use to love to look at all the pretty nail polish with glittery names like "bruise purple" and "toxic green". And the shoes! I LIVED for those black and white checkered Vans!!! However now the store has lost all its glory, and im sitting in a store with a  bunch of aeropostle wearing ghetto bitches who are looking for a studded rainbow belt and a baby tee with hello kitty on it thinking " Was hot topic always this poser-ish or has something changed?" Hot topic has always been lame. The punk movement is not something you can make up in factory filled with hungry children from foreign countries! Its not something that can be sold to any rich, fat, american child who thinks that because they have a piercing and a couple of black tee shirts on them with jack skellington or the joker from batman on them that they are punk. Isn't a part of being punk about doing your own thing? About being your own person? About going against the media! I mean friggin HELLO KITTY? Hot topic is turning people into mindless media slaves and taking their money too!!! That crappy ass store is friggin expensive as HeLL!! And the music gets more and more boring and mainstream-y. Panic at the Disco? Britney Spears is Harder than that shit! Hot topic has turned a genuine movement into the best source of advertising i have seen since commercials. Think about it.

Jack Skellington shirts = higher purchases of The Nightmare before Christmas

Little arm bands with that "Fred" guy from Youtube = higher views on fred's channels

Posters of Green Day = higher Green Day album sales

Its perfect. You become a walking advertisement and they never have to pay you for it!

Bottom Line is this: Hot topic is LAME! Some greedy executive is laughing his rich ass off while he charges you an arm and a leg for a bunch of cheap lame t shirts with disney characters, mouthless kittens, and snarky comments on them. Millions of kids right now are clutching their twilight books (RETARDS), wearing their their favorite Green day tee shirt and watching "The corpse Bride" for the 11th time this week. and i just think that is really sad.

I rocked Jordans from the time I was a baby till I was 13. Very expensive shoes. I remember a lot of waiting outside Footaction or Footlocker, getting a ticket number with a shoe size on it and being escorted to the store by an employee so I could peacefully buy my shoes without a riot breaking out. Ahh the good ol' days. Haha I still have a few pairs of Jordans that fit me from my younger days but I suspect I'll save them for my kids cause by then they'll be retros like the ones now. I don't see my style as being punk, metal, or whatever. I wear what I like. Have I shopped at hottopic? Of course. The $40 Kiss tee I'm wearing is from there. My daily ensemble is comprised of band tee, skinny jeans, and some sandals. Every now and then I might throw on a pair of high top nikes. I love fashion and I love having style. You don't have to be covered in black, tattoos, and piercings to be punk or whatever, but stay true to yourself and wear what u like. Just don't do it for the sake of being like everyone else.

This is the site as currently is.
yeah but behind that crap, they're still selling tripps and things like that. I don't know what they're getting at by going after that Neo-Hippie and Hipster image, don't hipsters but from the thrift store or either a high priced Urban Outfitters.
I don't see why people get down on those guys, it's no more worse than a hip-hopper going to a DTLR and buying a $200 dollar pair of useless Air Jordans, my sister went and got a pair of those Space Jams, and she damn near never wears the things. My shoes usually range anywhere from $20 to $50, I'm not dropping what can basically buy me a Wii, and a game to go with it, on a pair of shoes.
yeah, what ever they call em, lol. I haven't had a pair of Jordans since I was sixteen, I didn't wear them either.
I used to go there when there was only one that I knew of in the tri state area (somewhere in jersey) and all they sold was Transformers and G.I. Joe shit. Actually, they had all kinds of 80s cartoon shit. I thought it'd become an anime store or something.
That was in. . . . .1998? Around that time.

They had one in the mall down here, and it closed at the end of the year.

:)

I don't have that much of an opinion on that store.
The majority of kids that shop there seem pretty lame, but fig, it's the mall.

hot topic cannot be serious.
WTF is going on with their band tee section???????

It's a business. If I run a business and can help feed my family with Justin Bieber or Twilight gear, it's a go. Again, It's traded on the NASDAQ!
punk is dead as we now it anyway. todays music is crap. hot topic is a chain store but yes they do support indie designers and a lot of of people market to hot topic because they have stores all over the world. Sadly for some people hot topic is the only store where they can buy 'goth/punk" stuff besides online. No true punk would pay 50 dollars for a pair of anything unless its supposed to last a long time maybe lol. I don't care much for labels anymore because once its on mtv and in hot topic is on the mainstream radar and the true message is left in the dust. Punk died before it even fully started. I like goth because its timeless but that true goth thing is dying with the generation that started it. Hot topic ha not been an alternative store for a long time neither has torrid they just saw a market and had the money to pull it off and moved on to the next thing they are a corporation btw. Mass production makes everything into a trend but the reality is we all have to make a living. As technology progresses and society progresses things will keep getting worse lol.
this is what i have to say about hot topic. its hella easy to judge hot topic if you have other options. to clarify, not alot of plus size sections carry dark colored clothing, or better yet dark colored clothing worth wearing. they don't make/carry stud belts that are both made of leather and cruelty free.
i can't be like "hottopic sucks, i'll just get my similar style gear somewhere else". in a perfect world, a size 20 would be able to do that. yet this size 20 can't fit H&M, American apparel, and many other alternatives to hot topic.
for a plus size person like me, hottopic is great at times because they are expanding their "extended sizes" section. when torrid has failed me once again in terms of graphic tees, only keeping in stock the twilight shirts, then i turn to hottopic. when i want a man's hoodie that gets over my boobs, doesn't stop short, but not too baggy, then hottopic clearance is my place.
granted, i don't appreciate the bieber mania. but if bieber mania means they have more capital to invest in plus size shirts, belts, hell maybe even shoes, then great.
I agree that Hot Topic like any other business is out to get our money...or whoever is willing to give it up, I being one of those people. I'm kinda like if I like something I see, I like something I see. So I'll buy it...but not if that shit is high price and like $10 for a damn bracket. I know how to budget my money. ^_^ I do think alot of the stuff in there is high priced....but the Hot Topic I go to does seem to have sales on things like t-shirts that they sell for half-price.....good deals on t-shirts i must say. But I've noticed just like in Spencers I see alot more black kids or adults come into the store.....it's gettin kinda...like urban mainstreamy.....but I don't know....I dont really hang around alot of folks how are into the alternative stlyes.......
jimmy, he's the older gentlemen with the extremely low riding pants, right? lol.
You mean to tell mean folks still buy shit at NotGothic?
