Wow, great question.  There are a few of us who did venture out of our expected roles and pursued careers as Rock/Pop/Folk musicians.

Here are few from my generation:

Grace Jones

Odetta (Folk musician)

Tina Turner (Performed R&B) but hit the rock charts

Tracy Chapman (Folk Rock)

When I was growing up, it was publisized that Donna Summer actually wanted to do rock, but her managers encouraged her to stay in Disco and R&B.  She was a Led Zepplin fan and was totally inspired by them.

I hope that helps.  I am in my 40's so, I don't know much about today's music although I do listen to some modern folk / indie tunes.
