AFROPUNK

... the other Black experience

I just Quit my Job yesterday...

Not exactly the best thing to do in a recession but thankfully it was my Job #2 soo it just cuts into my savings.

Yesterday at around 5:30 my Manager asked me if I planned on " Combing or knotting" my hair.

I told him " No, this is how it grows"

He said "So you don't plan on combing or knotting it then?"

I said " Its how it grows ...No"

So he said " You have to wear a cap ...your hair is UNACCEPTABLE like that"

in my mind I was just gonna finish my shift and dip the fuck out for good since I had literally just came in

It wasn't until he actually brought me a cap to replace my visor that I couldn't take it and Quit on the spot

As a women with a few punk roots I've had every color under the sun at many establishments thanks to extensions.

Now that I just wanna see what GOD wants to grow... I have to go through that kind of treatment.

12-20-12 is officially the day I saw real racism ....not just hating me because I'm black (since he was black) but hating the only other feature of pride, besides my color, that is uniquely African and proving what people have been suspecting since the invention of the perm. You can't truly be black and proud in America ...

You can't simply let this happen beautiful people...If you're still treating your hair or adding in any extensions/weaving then stop...please just do yourself a favor and stop. Love you for you because you come from a race of lost people and the things that we see as normal just aren't

You quit!!!! You were supposed to sue.

That's what's up. I'm glad you told him where to shove that job. And this comin from a black man? That's a damn shame. It sucks that here we are in the 21st century and wearing our hair in it's natural form is still seen as a revolutionary act(!) amongst our own damn people no less let alone white folks. Some of them love OUR hair more than we do! It's 2012! This is utter insanity.  I don't have anything against sistas that perm and whatnot but I see the pattern. Most black woman do go natural but that's after they are forced to do it after years of damaging their hair. Why are we still putting ourselves through this? Most brothers gotta have their hair clipped low to appear "presentable" in certain jobs. And then you a have blonde straight haired Nicki Minaj running around with this "barbie" movement calling other black women nappy headed hoes and tellin them they need to get a perm. I really wouldn't care about her but the fact that she has a large fanbase of impressionable young black girls that hang on her every word makes me sick to me stomach. Then this skin bleaching crap is outta contol in africa and the carribean. It's disheartning. Will we EVER love ourselves?

GET EM girl!...Joshua10:24

To Kifaru and Logun - Its really not about the money...if it was i would have just stayed and did what they asked. Its about the fact that it even came up as a issue.

@ Polarvibez - Its a hard as world out here just to love you...You can't even grow without learning to love you as you and there's still 80 yr old women getting perms like its going out of business. Black people fund the billion dollar "Hair shops" just so they can imitate. Black men are made to look like slaves and therefore act like slaves with low cuts. Is it by chance that when you go into a prison system or military system the first thing you have to do is cut off all of your hair. NATURAL shouldn't even be the minority option that it is....our hair just grows ...JUST grows into dreads.

ندرى ليتل  - Its nothing but the truth ...right now there's a giant foot on our necks and it needs to change

You should have just got fired. If you can prove you were singled out due to ethnicity that is a law suit which many a person have won in the past.

@Syzhorra Shand Unlike others above I am not recommending a lawsuit for monetary reasons. I am recommending it because it is the right thing to do so that the next girl doesn't have to put up with the same shit.

Things only change when appropriate pressure is applied. Lawsuits provide that pressure.

I can't believe it's 2012 and people are still on dumb shit like this when there is SO MUCH MORE to focus on. It could possibly be justified it if it were an instance of you working around food, but the suggestion of "combing or knotting" pretty much throws that out of the window.

I agree with Jordana, you should have let him fire you or ask to see where it states you must comb/knot/perm/finger wave/s curl/soul glo/straight iron/tire iron your hair before coming into work and then tag him for harassment. Hindsight though, what can we do.

Glad I work for myself though, if I make dick moves I can just kick my own ass. ..I still want Frederick Douglass' hair D:

Kudos to you!! That is beyond disappointing coming from a brother.

maybe file a harassment complaint?  at least the guy will be reprimanded.
