AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

At long last, I'm back to the AP boards. Man I missed this place. There's probably a lot of newer folks who joined the community on these new boards (which I haven't entirely adjusted to) that don't know me, but I'm from the original AP board crew.

To whom it may concern, here's an update

My life got really crazy for the past few months and I've been all over the place.

I spent this past summer studying at Cambridge University in the UK which was LOADS of fun. I frikkin loved it over there.

This past semester I had the heaviest workload ever at school. That left me with like no time for internet forums :(. I graduate this coming semester and only have a couple of classes left so I'll be around much more.

I also got to attend my first academic conference. The Society of Ethnomusicologists conference was held at my school this year so I get to hear a lot of talks on rock music history and discourse and general talks on the study of music in terms not limited to the notes on the page. There were 3 incredible presentations on Guitar Hero/Rockband and there was also a presentation on tonality as a force of colonialism in Africa.

Also, this past semester my mother was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Fortunately, it was detected early and was removed (though they also had to take her entire stomach with it). Now she's recovering (she's in basically the same boat as people who've had gastric bypass), and she's on chemo therapy and radiation. Unfortunately, her recovery treatments have caused her to lose her hair (she had beautiful locks down to her waist). But I'm happy that she's still with us and is (god willing) on track to make a strong recovery.

This coming semester, I'll be TA'ing a course at my school on the history of Rock and R&B and doing my thesis on black authenticity in rock discourse relating to Jimi Hendrix.

In any event, I'm back for real now. What's been happening around here since I've been gone (since the old boards were closed)? What's good in the hood as they say?

welcome back. :]
same old spectrum of petty flaming to love-ins. AP "the movement" was on MTV so there's been a slight uptick in an already steady stream of new folks around.
Welcome back, you didn't really miss anything that a couple of peeks through the posts on the new board wouldn't catch you up on. It's basically same stuff different day...

Sorry to hear about your mom too, I do hope that her condition improves.
Welcome back Dr.
Hey Doc! Good to see you back. I was wondering whatever happened to the UK trip. Sorry about your mom but I'm glad she's in recovery. Jump back in!
Peace to you Dr Know. Hope your mom is feeling better and healing well. Welcome back. Your thesis paper subject sounds awesome!!!!
Welcome back Dr.
I think a lot has happened since the new boards. I would follow the advise and just check the board's history.

Your research sounds very interesting. My younger sister is addicted to guitar hero. She had been talking about an online competition or something when I saw her over Xmas last year.
thought I'd post some pictures from over the summer
