... the other Black experience

For those of you who dont know what squatters rights is it is basically the idea of, and in some places, legally assertaining someone else's property(a home or domain) by simply residing in it long enough and adding effects to the joint (this is the most simple i can explain the idea or law). Please chime in on the this, im very conflicted...

I believe its stealing. One of your basic rights as a human being and an American is the right to pursue happiness. For the majority of us in this world that would mean a home of some sort. If I go and pay for a home and/or property and someone sets up a tent and plants a garden on it, does not give them the right to now claim any portion of my property. At the same time, I should probably take steps to remove them as soon as they show up, but I still don't believe that there should be a such thing as squatters rights. I also believe that it is laws such as these that create conflict that could easily be avoided. Further, it seems to me that over the past few years that there has been a real sharp turn towards rewarding those that do not work and punishing those that do. For instance, I purchased my first home in 2007 about four months before the big economic fallout that we had. (I honestly didn't see it coming), because I make a certain amount of money, my bank would not allow me to refinance my mortgage. The main reason that I lost so much money on my home is because I lived in a fairly new development and many of the people that moved into the area, got home loans that they could not pay and should not have gotten approval for in the first place. (This is the reason the government had to bail out so many banks after the fallout.) Many people simply abandoned their homes and after the bank took control of those homes, they sold them for much less than what they were worth thereby reducing significantly the value of my home. I still can't refinance and after moving out of the state I had to short sale the house. I have to deal with this because I am a responsible tax paying citizen while those who should not have received home loans in the first place are getting more and more benefits it seems. Squatters rights is just another benefit at the expense of those who really are working.

I totally see your perspective and I thank you for it...It gives me new insight (as I have not experienced such troubles) and information for me to ponder on. You see, I have lived as a homeless person when I was younger, and very serious about the crust punk lifestyle. I would squat in places for a day or two but then move on and most of these places were abandoned. Despite doing what I had to do I've always intended to be a good person, So this is something, now that I live in a home, I want to sort out in my mind.

The idea of property is especially bullshit when land/buildings/what-not is rotting away when someone can USE it.

I don't think it's plain stealing.  I think using fallow land a property owner can't decide what to do with or is waiting for the right chump to pay millions of dollars for it -- for an edible garden or working farm to feed the surrounding community is the smartest thing to do.

Also if you want to make the argument that squatting is bad for the economy or property values look into the research on "slums".  The more densely concentrated a group of ppl the more the produce by way of ideas and economic interactions.  Slums are amazingly resilient and economic powerhouses b/c when ppl get together shit happens.

Also I don't get how punk and stealing are mutually exclusive... not saying these two ideas are joined at the hip, more just pointing out that they're not really related.

I was referring to to opposing ends, i.e good and bad...and you made some very valid points as well, especially from my perspective when I was out on the streets. Thank you for commenting, keep it coming.

I'm glad you have a home now brother. A basic human want is to have a place to call their own.

I see what you're saying here and I don't believe that punk and stealing are synonymous. But I don't think someone should be forced to do something with their property simply because they aren't using it. Its your property, if you don't want to do anything with it, you don't have to. If someone else wants to turn it into farm land, they can either buy it, or work some deal with you to use it as such.
