AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

So what was the last few shows you went to? Big small any kind of music. I wanna hear about it.

Yesterday my sis and niece and nephew invited me along with them to 2009 UCLA Reggae Jazz Festival, the first day is "Jam Day" now.

I really had an awesome time (there were tons of young and some older black folks and you know what a lot of "afropunk-esque" type of brothers and sisters).
Especially Ayo, Leela James, De La Soul and yes the amazing one herself, Erykah Badu.

Before that......I jammed hard and danced all night til I was in pain and out of breath at Hepcat show on my birthday last year!!!! Ya'll must see them live at least once if you into funky rhythm dance all night old school ska. Excellent music, excellent songs, excellent peformance.

That month before I went to the Blackest of The Black show. See my page for a ore complete description...........funny thing about that name is I doubt I saw more than a few Black people there but yes I know the black is for Black Metal. Ha ha. It was still a lot of fun and loud. I think I'd go next time just to see what other bands open for Danzig. And this time I finally got to see what Dimmu Borgir is all about. Quite fun show and GD and his bad attitude self really sounded good onstage with his band.

And the next show I'm going to in June is Raphael Saadiq, Femi Kuti, and Santogold. Whee!!

Haven't been to a concert in a year. Really lame, I know.
(it was Saul Williams, Dragons of Zynth and Tamar Kali opened up)

THIS YEAR, I hope to be @ Rock The Bells.
I'm not sure of the entire line-up, but I know Nas and De La Soul will be there.

Santogold: ya know whats funny is that back when she was in the band Stiffed, I saw the performace, but I thought her music sucked. I kept telling someone, "her voice sucks!"
Really bad, I know.
the last concert i went to was a while ago. it was santogold and mates of state opened up for her. santogold was awesome. i think you'll really like her show and her dancers.

i wish i could afford to go to more concerts.
The last concert I attended was one that I played:

It was probably the best show I've ever played in my life.
The last show I went to was Children of Bodom, Black Dahlia Murder, and Between the Buried and Me at the Wiltern. It was back at the beginning of the massive dow plunges in 2008. The bands all played really well.

The urge to go to show after show is waning for a lot of reasons:
Money. It's not flowing like it used to be.
DVDs. Seems like everyone that I would want to see releases a concert DVD after the tour. It's usually 5 hours of great multicam footage+a documentary for the price of parking+gas.
Back in the day Spoilage. Seen way too many really good shows for way less than today's going rate at smaller venues.
Less bands I am really stoked to go see.

I would like to go see No Doubt this summer, but I can wait for the DVD and save 60 bucks.
The last concert I went to was the Green Day show at Central park last Friday.
Dude, that exact comment came up yesterday with me and my niece about No Doubt. Exactly.
Hey Sean, great pictures. Gotta ask Chris/Blkskwidd if he's seen y'all live already!

Just saw Ursula Rucker & King Brit at Chop Suey in Seattle.
Nice intimate set. Just the 2 of them with a DJ in the back.
I just saw NIN and Jane's Addiction a couple of weeks ago. Going to see Peaches on June 11.
Have Heart, Polar Bear Club, and Trapped Under Ice at the end of April

ABC No RIO Last Sat before last, I think. I saw a lot of ambient noise/shoegaze-ish/drone/noise projects, like Blood of a Zombie. It was awesome. The music was very contemplative, and allowed you to think clearly and meditate to it while you were listening to it. It's re-inspired me to make music, which I WILL do sometime soon!
