AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Little did we know about the 60's and 70's- musical gems!

I've recently been on a kick listening to lesser known musical acts from the 60's and 70's.
I'm sharing some of my finds and if you have anything to add let me know ^-^

Here's a quick playlist with these lovely artists!

Ofege - 70's Nigerian band

This Heat- 70's prog rock (I've listened to this quite a bit. Rips your ears off. Kick Ass!)

Françoise Hardy- 60's French singer

Nico- 60's model and songwriter

Scott Walker- 30 Century Man

Lee Hazlewood- Psychedelic Cowboy

And last but not least is **Nick Drake**
his music makes me cry and his life story makes me cry even more. By far, my most beloved find.

CHEERS!

look up Bulent if you like nick drake ...and vashti bunyen.

french and spanish ye-ye... heck yeah. there are a lot of pretty cool french psych/freak beat/garage compilations that're floating around... From the top of my head Wizz/Psychorama is a great french psych comp, and Girls in the Garage is pretty awesome specifically their french girls comp vol. 4...

jacques dutronc is a "golden god" .. :P not quite, but he's really funny and supercool.
and of course there's serge gainsbourg...i only like/know a few of his songs and they can be hit or miss but when they hit they're genius. :]

god i had a huge collection of 60s/70s source and inspiration material for folks like Stereolab on my now dead and sad harddrives from a few years ago. :( sorry i can't help you out more... my collection was thanks to torrents and slsk tho, so i'm sure everything is still out there.

also nico, she's aight i like her, but velvet underground w/ moe tucker is pretty awesome especially songs like After Hours.

anyway, what I'm doing atm re: 60s/70s music...

what i'm trying to do a Search&Destr...Download on is Cartola's albums... made (more) famous via the movie City of God. The guy is too awesome, really. The vdos of him on youtube make me wish he was my grandfather and I knew him. haha. OHYEAH and brasilian tropicalia--specifically TOM ZE is still a favorite of mine--this album is the one you need to get: Se O Caso É Chorar.

god there's so much really great music from the 1960s and 1970s...

oh yeah and then there's roots reggae, ska, and so on. Prince Buster kind of chill awesomeness.
oh man, and then african soul/blues/funk...ha. too much.

and imo, unrelated to music, but american film in the 1970s was a high point, possibly The high point of american cinema period.
Nick Drake was pretty awsome! I wish I could post but I have rare gems from the 40s and 50s. :( That's a little too old school for you, huh?
thanks, but i got my fill off my usual places, ha. cartola is pretty well known now...when city of god first came out i remember i couldn't find anything.

One After Twelve said:
^ Rumor has it that if you do a torrent search using the Portuguese for "discography cartola" , you can get to the music pretty quickly. ;)
April March back many years ago did this cooool fun album "Paris In April" of her french ye-ye style music.
She also has a couple really nice slow tempo other sound on her albums "Chrominance Decoder" and "Triggers".
and the album "triggers", prolly for no reason at all, reminds me of kahimi karie. :]
Oh Velour, I love you for this post!!And what a coincidence,I LOVE NICK DRAKE!! His music helped me through some tough time in my life! And Lee Hazlewood is definitly dope!!
The Frupp , King Crimson, Moody Blues
