AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Hi.  I'm working on a documentary about black women in rock.  If you fit the bill or know of a black woman who performs rock, hit me up.  You can view the trailer on my profile or go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKr7ESILHQQ

cool. It looks good, from what I saw. You have some great footage. I'm so jealous you got to meet Cindy Blackman.
anyway,... I went to your website, and I noticed that you haven't reached your goal yet (as far as financing your project).
If equipment is the main expense, then I gotta tell ya,... you don't need that much money.
Really and truly, you shouldn't need to spend no more than $3,000. Tops.
Pardon if I come across as just a lightweight (considering my assumption that you've been perfecting your craft for years).
Computer-wise
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/mac_mini?mco=...
Its a Mac-mini. A small "computer". Its a dual-core processor with over 320 GB, you can hook up a keyboard, mouse, monitor, and fire-wire to it. Don't worry too much about the price on the site, I'm sure you can buy it for just $500 (somewhere else). It definitely has more than enough storage space, even if you're gonna edit two films. Any desktop that has more than that is really just more of a luxury.

Camcorders.
I'm not sure what exactly you want to purchase, but I can tell you right now,.... if you're hoping to buy a Sony 24p or Canon XX-L (or anything like that), you'd be wasting your money.
Unless you buy a High-Definition professional camcorder, all cams are really the same.
Its all digital.
To achieve the "film-look"/"film grain effect", all you have to do is get a regular cam, (make sure it has the capability to lower its shutter speed). Lower the shutter-speed to 1/15th. But anything lower than that, and your playback will look very jumpy.

I hope any of this was helpful.
Thanks. I just began my the Indiegogo campaign barely a week ago. So I am no where near my goal as yet. I agree that docs can be far less expensive to shoot. And if this were a project I could shoot in a few days, in one city/location, and I already owned all of the cam and lighting equipment I needed, and could edit it myself, I would agree. No matter which way you cut it, there are hard costs involved in producing a film that is sea worthy for film and television distribution, 3k is not going to do the job as there are so many other considerations and expenses beyond those you have listed - not to mention travel, insurance, post-production, marketing and distribution costs. It's an amazing journey full of lessons. I'm not among the most experienced. So I stay open to the process and to any comments. I'll keep you posted as the project continues to unfold. Thanks.
Grrrl......have you seen the Black Music Month ad on BET featuring the very beautiful talented singing Tamar Kali?
I just saw it yesterday and it's so wonderful to see her. Congratulations on your film project!!
No I haven't. Interesting, as BET has never had an interest in black women in rock. I love your pic. Kung Fu Hustle is one of my favorite films.

Didn't Jada Pinkett Smith have a rock or "Metal" band at some point? Does Wicked Wisdom count?
Definitely!

Nice vid!
Maybe you can interview Jada Pinkett Smith and her thrash band too. I didn't know she had one until I saw her on Letterman once.
My bad! I didn't even see that JPS was mentioned. :(
