AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Has anyone seen the movie "Medicine for Melancholy" ?

It's a very good indie movie, you can watch it online. It's very relevant for this Afro-Punk site.

If anyone has watched the movie i would like to hear what you have to say about it.

Love this film. I actually wrote a couple of pieces on it. First one here:

I saw it. I liked it.
I thought it was a cool art film. A friend of mine hipped me to it not too long ago. It shows an interesting perspective on cross cultural dating, the infamous one night stand, love, etc. Cool flick. I definitely recommend it. It's short, sexy, hip and an all around smart film. Check it out if you haven't.
The short "Tall Enough" was beautiful, JahLuv. Thank you for sharing that.

I have yet to see Medicine for Melancholy. I heard it's cool. I love the setting being in SanFrancisco. I looooove the bay. I wonder to what extent the movie captures the history of Black folks in the city. I also wonder how much love is given to AfroPunk/BlackRock musicians in the movie.

I thought it was good. The only that bothered me was the music. AP/Black rock music is poorly represented.
I know of it, still haven't had a chance to check it out yet. :(
Tall Enough is beautiful. I'm going to check out Medicine for Melancholy right now.
Weird I just watched it like 2 hours ago. (freaky) I liked it. Dude was like a combo Mars Blackmon and Gil Scott Heron. I sort of wanted it to delve deeper, I wanted it to be grittier, show some teeth, but it never really went there. Homegirl was just pretty and plain, and wore checkered vans (oooh how punk!) like who wouldn't be attracted to her? I was sort of bothered by the consistant presence of being out of ones head. The idea that they would be so blotto they wouldn't remember anything, and that they got together so quick the night before they didn't even exchange names? Considering how much they had to drink the night before they looked pretty put together in the morning. She didn't have a purse, but her hair and makeup was perfect after screwing and being drunk? Clearly written by a man. LOL

Also when they were under the influence is when the conversations about race would start? What are you trying to say? That we can't feel that when were sober?

The lack of AP influence is pretty consistant with the SF scene. Now, had they been in the east bay, Oakland perhaps, the flavor would have changed dramatically.

I liked dude, homegirl played to too tight. I would have liked to seen more of what she was experiencing in her life. She sort of made this statement that 'because were black were supposed to be together?!' Well some could say that's the whole joke, how because we are so few in the scene, we do tend to ignore eachother, and deny our connection. That girl KNEW she liked him, KNEW she wanted him. WHY make a dumbass statement like that? Almost like there is some shame in being attracted to /falling in love with someone who looks like you.

The Jarmusch ending made me agro.
I came back to the thread JUST to view the short "Tall Enough" for the 6th time! There's something about seeing a Black woman being loved and showing love. I just won't ever get tired of it. Women of African descent are rarely seen as loving and worthy of true love in our popular media. It has taken a toll on so many of us. I would argue, especially for Black men.
I finishing it as we speak. I really am enjoying it. And I wish there were more films of this caliber. Or at least that I know of.
