AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

Sometimes us AP's tend to dig beyond popular culture to find those eccentric people we feel we can relate to, but many times they are in front our face all along and didn't even realize it. Exhibit A....

All these years and I am now noticing the NBA freak of them all, Dennis Rodman was a true Afropunk with his colorful hair, tattoos, and piercings on the court in addition to his outlandish sports covers.

Who else can you think of?

How about brother Dave Chapelle?

I agree! His style is so eclectic! Even as he's started to cross into the mainstream he hasn't changed his style, and I hope he never does.

Agreed:

In the event that Zoe is not yet yet 18, I denounce and reject my previous statement.

Tricky

Maxim Reality from The Prodigy

Del the Funkee Homosapien

Del is a total blerd. Outside of the fact that his alter ego is a cyborg from the year 3030,  he's also been known to record songs with animated primates. A lover of various *ahem* "plants and fungi", he's also a hardcore gamer, a gadget geek and connoisseur of underground japanese culture. In other words, no different than many of the dudes on this site right now. Plus he managed to record a pretty decent song with Dinosaur JR. Yep. Definetely afropunk.

Goldie, mad style (i still remember when him and Tricky were fighting over Bjork lol)

YES malik. the whole PF-allstars squad deserves AP status. i agree 1000%

...still punk fuckin rock after all these years

(check out his doo wop picture, though :)

unpopular opinion time:

does anybody think that some of the ppl listed here are NOT punk (from the perspective of a dignified, human-centered, individualistic rebellion in the post-industrial world) & just have a quirky stylist from time to time? :)

i'm just saying...

No I believe all these people are 'punk' in some way whether they dress different or aren't afraid of speaking their mind. I'm sure someone wouldn't think Kanye is afropunk but he has done alot as far as pushing a new style for rappers who if it weren't for him wouldn't dare wear certain things and of course speaks his mind....so hey whatev.
