AFROPUNK

... the other Black experience

I'm sure around here there is a place where we all can just post either poems or a commentary on other's poems. But just in case there isn't, This is a thread where we all can share poems, lyrics or anything we have. Commentary is very welcome.

To start, I want to share two of my most recent poems I wrote. One is about the pressures of feeling normal vs. embracing your geekiness, and the other is my disappointment on how poets don't get as much attention as your average singer does.

Advance or Deteriorate

Here's the million dollar question:
Should I stay grounded on earth?
Should I still keep relating?
Or should I reach a higher plane
And continue growing?
Because it seems in this lifetime
You can't have it both ways anymore
And that's what infuriates me

Peer pressure works like this:
You can become as smart as a whip,
As intelligent as a teacher
As brainy as Stephen Hawking,
But who are you going to relate to?
Not many people are on your level
Not everyone knows where you are
Or what you are talking about
So trying to study or bring yourself to the highest of levels
Seems like a recipe for loneliness, isolation, depression and alienation
Because although, you aren't a face in the crowd,
You'll be the brains of the crowd

And this is why I'm no smarter than you,
I somewhat want to relate to you,
I don't want to make you feel
Lower than you probably already do.
I want to feel like I'm still people
And not some kind of vacuum
I want to feel like intelligence
Isn't a recipe for loneliness, Isolation, depression or alienation

I want to at least feel like
What I do will be common
and since knowing your matrices
Or everything about words
Doesn't really feel common,
What is the point?

Why Poets Won't Get a World Tour

As a poet, I sometimes wish people loved poetry as much as they loved music

After all, the only true difference
Is you don't need instruments
You don't have to sing
You don't have to rap
You don't have to dance
Just open your mouth
And let it flow

Poetry, very much like music,
Is much better when it is real, when it sounds true,
When it is trying to really say something
After all, aren't song lyrics supposed to be poetry?

I think I know why people hate it so
You see, there isn't anything wrong
With letting poetry articulate how you feel
But at some point in your life,
You have to realize there is more to write
Than about love, misery and heartbeak
I'm not saying don't do it
I'm just saying if you want to tackle a common topic
It helps to at least be imaginative

After all, the best part about poetry
Is that you don't always have to
Just say how you feel all the time
Offer some new perspective
Expose people to a new world or thought
Offer your points of view
Blow people's minds however possible
Make them relate and make them learn
You don't have to rhyme it with anything
Because at the end of the day,
Nobody wants to care for your broken heart
But they will, if you make them care
Make them see why they should care
About any single thing that comes out of your mouth

I dream that poets get to tour all the time
Raise their voices in front of a thousand microphones
They get to go from city to city
Pick their choice in releasing books or CD
Let their delivery do the talking
Prove that poetry is as important as music
Get people interested in the art of it

You don't need guitars, bass or drums
Not even autotune
Just use your voice, your words, your authenticity
And watch how many people wish to see you

I wish people loved poetry
As much as they loved music
