AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Hi everyone,

So I wrote a post over at my blogazine called 'Overcoming Insecurity' sharing my story on low self-confidence during my teen years. I'm sure you all have gone through it at some point in your life. How did you overcome your battle with insecurity?

Well for me alot of factors came into play, but one of them is looking life for what it truly is.
There are many factors to life but to be simple you have the unawakened and the Conscious,
the insecure is usually unawakened and their main insecurity might be with material excess or cosmetic issues...

I think everyone has a different way in dealing and coping with insecurity. Some may turn to sports, exercise, and better eating habits. Others may need therapy from a professional.

Are you still a model? Do you find that other people in the Fashion industry feel that way. Models usually seem pretty confident to me.

I was never a model lol. And yes, plenty people in the fashion industry are insecure including models....remember, models have so much pressure on them to look a certain way and that is very emotionally scarring! So no matter how pretty they are to us, they still deal with low confidence at times. Imagine youre a size 2 and someone calls you fat! crazyness...

Interesting that you only replied to that one :P lol

I don't get it. Are they so isolated by the modeling community they don't know why they are models? Surely the look at the designers make-up artists, buyers and set directors and know that they are more beautiful than them. I always wondered if a lot of models were dumb or have very limited education. Maybe that has some impact on their thinking too.

Also what do you have to be insecure about? You look to be thin, not so dark, and have long hair. I do not detect any skin blemishes on you. I can't tell for sure but judging by your apparent height you look to be filled out in all the right places. Have you ever seen Donatella Versace or Lady Gaga? They have loads of security and they are quite fucked up.

@kifaru no no I am not insecure now that story refers to my teenage years and my struggle with it for a long time lol. And btw, just cuz I look a certain way doesn't mean I wouldn't have issues.

@Chris I apologize! Tis true it usually has a lot to do with material and cosmetic things. Look at the world we live in (in America) people are so caught up in $$, the clothes on your back, the car you own, and what 'grade of hair' you have it is impossible to avoid. But what we can do is stop comparing ourselves and look deep within....once I did that a whooooole lot changed from me.

"Also what do you have to be insecure about? You look to be thin, not so dark, and have long hair. I do not detect any skin blemishes on you."

lol@ this sentence.  even the thin, light-skinned, longer hair having ladies who may or may not be deemed model worthy (if XYZ are attained and maintained--weight mainly) can and probably do have very deeply rooted insecurities--most especially if their self-worth is tied up in their looks.  i find that if men go after you at an early age and treat you different just because you become a bit more femme or are deemed pretty it tends to skew values and self-perception.

un-welcome sexualized attention from my youth days definitely did the opposite of giving me any kind of confidence...especially since i scorned what was superficial even as a kid.  i wore baggy clothes, shunned make up, and had a ... spotty hygiene regime w/ the exception of brushing my teeth. lol.

feeling secure in yourself and your ability to form and maintain relationships has little to do w/ outward appearances.  also from my perspective if your family life or life in general is based on superficiality your grounding in 'truth' and 'reality' is totally messed up and will require a lot of therapy and mental/relearning/re-parenting work...  not having solid ground to stand on in terms of your relationship with yourself = massive insecurity in all facets of life.

Thank you for this. I find it rather sad that people fail to realize that ANYONE can feel the grips of insecurity and just because they look a certain way isn't going to be an instant cure all. :|

I think it's a little deeper than that Bro. I've known several models (low level mind you) and they were all EXTREMELY insecure. They didn't seem like it on the surface but everything they did, including the modeling was rooted in seeking approval from others. Everything they did was about getting that nod from outsiders as if they had no real sense of themselves. It can be really sad to see a person who is so blind to the beauty inside themselves that they become obsessed with the external. I'm only speaking to the subject of models of course because lord knows there are plenty of people out here with and abundance or insecurities that have no ties to the modeling industry. LOL!!
