... the other Black experience

I'm so tired of people using the Bible to condemn me to Hell, the bible has been used to justify the enslavement of African Americans, wars, hate crimes against homosexuals, and many other horrendous acts.

The same bible from which we base our beliefs, values, and ideas, is the same book that was used to oppress and degrade women. I dont understand how any woman, feminist, or lesbian can read the bible and proudly call themselve a Christian.

Many people have been raised in the Church for years, and would never consider turning their backs on their religion, however, how many of you have actually read the book, on which you base your entire lives. We use the bible as a moral guide of what is right or wrong, basing our decisions and activities on words that have been supposedly given by God, but written by man?

I have made some very bold statements above. But I will cite examples from the Bible to justify my point. This blog emphasis wil be on the sexism portrayed throughout the Bible.

The Bible is the most misogynistic book in existance. Isn't it alittle bit odd, that the entire bible was written by all MEN? Isn't it odd that God sent his son? Why not his daughter? Why would Adam come first, isn't the woman who gives birth, aren't women the creators and bearers of life, why did Adam not come from Eve, and God being the supreme creator, why do we not refer to him as a She, for giving birth to all life. Although God's sex is not to be question becaus we all no that God is all sexes, there fore being no sex at all, however the bible constantly refer to God as a male, using male pronouns, and to his Son. Why would an all loving God show favor to men, by having a son, why not a son and a daughter?

Paul writes in 1 Corithians:

"7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, for asmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man."

This scripture needs no further translation or interpertation. It clearly states that men are at a position high above men being made of God image, while women were made of man. Therefore creating an patriarchy.

But lets go back to the beginning. Genesis blames the downfall of all mankind on Eve, not Adam, portraying her as a temptress, who seduced innocent, pure Addam into eating the apple. Then she along with the entire female sex is cursed to have pain during childbirth, painful periods, and to forever be submissive to men.

I'm sure you all have read the story, Adam immediately, blames Eve for what has happen, like an coward, stating:

Genesis 3-12:

"The man said, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

It seems almost as if Adam wants to blame God, "the woman YOU put here with me."

Then God continutes to curse Eve. Genesis 3:16:

To the woman he said,
"I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you."

Notice that at the end God deems that man will RULE over all women. This is the precedent for which the rest of the bible is written.

The bible is used to suppress female sexaulity. Women are either one sexual extreme or the other, the Virgin Mary vs.. the Jezebel. Women in the bible are consider to be either a virgin or a whore. While the men of the Bible are polygamist, King Solomon having 300 wives, God's chosen one, Abraham had both a wife and a concubine. A concubine is a woman that a man may have without the commitment of marriage, like a mistress. When Abraham's wife was unable to birth a child, he had sex with his concubine. This act could be considered rape, also adultery. However Abraham, was still blessed. Women who dishonored their families, or cheated on their husbands were stoned to death had to prove their innocence by bringing proof of their virginity, offering their bloody bedsheets to the elders of the community.

Dueteronomy 22:

"If a man takes a wife and, after lying with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, "I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity," 15 then the girl's father and mother shall bring proof that she was a virgin to the town elders at the gate. 16 The girl's father will say to the elders, "I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, 'I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.' But here is the proof of my daughter's virginity." Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver [b] and give them to the girl's father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives"

It's 2010, can people still be that stupid? I mean, this bible thumping stuff is so 70's and 80's.
Hi, I've replied to other threads of this kind and I guess as a Christian on afropunk I'd like to do so again. First I'd like to say that I'm truly sorry and upset that you have experienced sexism and other mistreatment by Christians and those claiming to be Christians. These acts are clearly not what the Bible endorses and I venture to show you that. In the verses directly following those you quoted in Corinthians it says:"1 Corinthians 11:11 (New International Version)

11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. it also says:1 Corinthians 11:12 (New International Version)

12For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.

Regarding divorce Jesus said:Matthew 19:8
Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. also:Matthew 19:9
I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."
There you have it. Now with regards to the justification of slavery : the bible does not justify race based slavery but indentured servitude and it contains very specific parameters for that.
Whites have used the bible to justify slavery in the past were actually using people's high regard for the bible coupled with there very low biblical literacy ( like you're doing) . Many if not all abolitionist were Christians and sited the Bible as their source. Not to mention Nat Turner who was a slave and a pastor who using the bible, led a slave rebellion. Further still if one were to research the history of African American music she would find that much of it is based upon the Spiritual, a folk song style that used the Christian message and biblical themes to subversively attack slavery .
wow so true!
yeah what they failed to mention was that when jesus came one of the things he did was make it so that many of God's crazier laws became null. jesus was like itunes upgrade 7.0 to God's ipod.
I wouldn't call them crazy but I would say that the law was a system that was to symbolically point to Christ's coming and also reveal that Gods holiness is unatainable through human effort. It even says in The Law that to love God with all your heart and soul and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself is the fulfillment of. The Law.

I don't condemn anyone. Failing to recognize ones own sinfullness and Christs paying the price for that sinfullness with his life is what condemns people.A person isn't righteous on their own merit because we all sin and fall short of God's standard. Jesus came to pay the price for that by dying on the cross. Therefore if you believe Jesus and turn from your sin you are forgiven and become a new creation in Christ. He enables you to live a life that loves people and follows His way.

Everyone has their way. but no one has a right to condemn anyone else. its not nice and it hurts feelings. let folk live. a righteous person is a righteous person no matter what they believe.
What I'm saying, as someone who knows that morality is empirical, is that christianity is true and it's ways apply to everyone , Christ makes no distinction between colour, race, sex, or economic standing. He's willing to except you and save you based upon his work on the cross and grace alone.Again I find it necessary to say that no one is righteous. Only Christ is and those who accept him have been made righteous by faith. This is hard truth. If you believe in it or not has no bearing on the truthfulness if the Gospel. I would also say that Jesus commands us and enables us to love our neighbors and our enemies. This love is nit compulsive, meaning that a forced conversion is no conversion at all.

my bad that wasnt targeted at you. however those rules only apply to a person who is a Christian. and if thats not something a person believes they dont share ur mindset and i think alot of people forget that and at that point religion serves as a tool to divide people instead of us recognizing our common humanity.

I have been struggling with this for far too long. Bible thumping is very real in 2010. I'm from a highly religious family. My mother can't talk about anything without bringing the conversation back to Christianity. I mean we are talking about what she's cooking for dinner and somehow the conversation goes into church and Christianity. So much so I no longer enjoy talking to her. I've been trying to reprogram myself against what has been taught to me since I was in the womb. It is hard but I just don't want to serve a God that condemns people for loving each other or their race or gender. Some Christians are taught to FEAR God...(that is how I grew up to believe) and everything that you do will have the consequence of hell. I think there is...matter of fact I KNOW there is a God and a heaven and hell...I just think that some people use the Bible as a control mechanism.
I'm a Christian, and unfortunately there are many who use the bible, this being a predominately run Judeo Christian Society, and have used it to condemn, and harshly judge others. It's extremely easy to quote phrases from the bible to use in conjunction with proving your point, regardless of what that point should be. Thumb a few phrases that, regardless of where your taking it from, King james or New testamont, paste them together, and you've got your're definitive arguement. Whites are superior to rule, women should remain in servitude and be beaten if out of line. yada yada ...

These people don't care whether or not they're spreading gods word, or understanding his discipline for worship, they just like everyone else want control. The bible is just as easy, as tuning scientific data to support your research, taking a philospher like nitzsche and taking his writings to create a government he'd oppose in his name. It doesn't matter ... That's why it's crucial , for true followers, to continuously study the bible until it becomes rhoutine. The meanings always change, they are in part written based from the accounts of others, and interpretations upon those. Sometimes the message is written directly, other times you have to read between the lines...

The church, and religious faith, have played in integral part of black peoples lives in this country, following down the line of generations. I think it's sad that many people forget that black churches originally served as a place to keeping families and communities together. Many have sponsered black youth of their congregations to attend now historic black colleges, to pursue higher education. In my own family, I'm descended from educated black women, beginging with the first who was sent to study nursing, the place of the black church as been a fundamental historical tradition that I think should be accounted for, and never forgotten. Despite it's early mandate on slaves, it's history has much to do with inspiring blacks to fight, without hate, all in the name of peace was well as promoting family and well being..

As to the bible, you don't have to accept it, but keeping in open mind should go both ways, that perhaps you are just as susceptible to bias, that might skew your views on it. There's a positive side I feel you've neglected to mention.
I agree with you on this too. I think that problem is that the vast majority of theologians have yet to realize the true good in the book and keep on proselytizing others rather than using the material to transcend their own suffering. Until most Christian churches use their material to help people transcend their own devilish motivations (including the leaders themselves), they're going to run into disagreement. But so far most heads of faiths keep interpreting the word to be belief in some man-god and are'nt willing to revolutionize their theology into something actually Earth-god ordained. For now its gonna stay in an obviously man-made state and do more harm than help... like oil spills, CFCs or non-biodegradable plastics. They don't believe in Heaven. If they did, they wouldn't tolerate so much Hell (destruction of the earths creations) on earth and protect the weak, discriminated, sickly, lost and oppressed rather than leaving us to be destroyed by their rabid poseur sheep who are merely following the crowd in order to get bread crumbs.

The only thing valuable that I walk away from Christianity with -- and that of any religion -- is the idea of self-sacrifice like Jesus, Muhammad, Moses and Buddha have done. But many of their flock are so drugged up on video games, machissmo, purity and substances to EVER do what they should be doing. Then they question us folks who actually do handle "the word" intelligently. WTF?
