... the other Black experience

At least once a month I hear about one of these dogs attacking and seriously injuring a child or some other dog.

What's the deal? I always hear people talking about "the owner not the breed", but I don't think I would ever have one. I've been attacked by dogs before and have seen dogs attack others. Luckily none of those involved a pit or I suspect the outcome would have been much worse.

Do you own one? Are you that classic "good" pit bull owner that they cut to after they show where a kid got mauled on the local news? If it's all media spin, who gains by demonizing the breed?

One of my wife’s friends was trying to start his own kennel a few years back, before Hurricane Katrina derailed his plans. He ended up giving the dog to her instead, and relocating. She was some kind of “blue strain” pit bull; I don’t know a lot about dog eugenics, but guys in the neighborhood would always gush and ask if we’d be interested in breeding her.

The only reason I hesitate to stereotype a certain kind of person who keeps pits for breeding and/or fighting (without the resources or the knowledge to treat the animals properly), because I myself wound up being profiled while walking her one night. Set off a chain of events with the same shitstain-cop on numerous occasions, and I stopped wearing white tees for our walks. I digress.

She was supposed to be the “front door” dog, according to my wife’s friend. But she was practically harmless. But she was also a fucking headache. I’d come home and she’d be on the couch; she’d immediately get down and hide before I could even yell. She took every attempt to steal food whenever no one was looking – we lost half-eaten pizzas because of her.

There was this older gent further down the block who would sit outside all day, and shake his cane and cuss all about (he took meds of some kind). They called him “Chief”, and he hated the dog with a passion. He threatened us (me and the dog) numerous times, “nigger!” this and “Nigger!” that, as soon as we’d come his way around the block. One day he got annoyed with me laughing or smiling at him, so he got out of his chair and charged the dog. He wound up tangled in the leash, trying frantically to smash my fingers with his cane while I tried to retrieve the leash. The dog just sat down beside him and licked her privates while I untangled the two of them. She wouldn’t touch him, though.

I’d shorten the leash around kids, but a lot of them would step up and pet her, against my advice. Never had a bad incident, though.

But yeah, I’m not sure if pits can be “taught” to be smarter. I always considered her a “dumb” one. We eventually had to give her up.
Someone had one of those "blue" puppies in the office park last week. It was very cute. I just think of all the positive things a dog can bring to a person's life and how that would be completely destroyed if the dog seriously injured someone.
I owned a Pit-Blue Heeler mix. Great dog, the only time he tried to attack was when this crack head walked up. Apparantly my dog didn't like the smell, but the kid jumped the fence intime to avoid getting bit.
Actually, all of it is spin (News media get ratings, politicians and pundits rant on television and receive press etc etc.)

Any breed of dog (that isn't closely related to wolves) can be potentially aggressive if not trained properly. See vid at bottom of the screen.

This breed isn't for everyone. It has high prey drive (after all it is a terrier), and needs quite a bit of exercise. Typically, kids buy these dogs and after a few months they get bored with them and tie them up in a back yard. The dog remains unsocialized and untrained (which is bad for just about every any breed of dog) and once they get loose lookout. But if you were to do this to a German Shepherd, or Akita or any working breed you'd get the same result.

I've had a Pitbull for the last 9 yrs and when he gets bored he gets destructive. Not aggressive, he just tears up the house. I just take him for a run, or let him get on a treadmill until he's exhausted.

Professional obedience training is a must (Heel, sit, stay, come all that stuff.)

If you're active or your family is active this is actually an awesome breed of dog. They're especially fond of children. Example : "Pete the Pup" from the little rascals.

My advice to anyone thinking of buying a pit (or any other dog). Always buy from a reputable breeder, train, and exercise.

^This is natural aggression.
^^Totally true. All my father and brother have ever had are pits (and the occasional boxer, bird dog, doberman, german shepard and great dane). I think a huge part of it is how most black people take care of their dogs. Tie em up and let them rot in the back. It's almost like we are trained not to treat our animals too well lest we start getting "crazy white people" comments when we get too close to our animals.

Oh boy, that Caucasian mountain dog is scarier than any pit I've ever seen, especially angry- it's like a bear. Most of it is spin, some of it is spin inside the culture (corner boys breeding them to look hard, etc.,). Pits and rottweilers are the blacks of the dog world. Plagued by many factors that lead people to see them in a certain negative light. I guess Dobermans are the Tejanos.
Pit bulls are fine, i live with one. There's not a damned thing wrong with these, or any other dogs. What you have are fucked-up, often criminal owners & a sleazy, sensationalist media.

Now if someone had said that about your favorite people you would be up in arms. There are plenty of latinos around my way with these mean assed dogs. I think it's a class thing.
You mean Jews? Explain?

Dogs have classes too and pits are the negroes.

Did someone say jews?

You seem to bristle at sweeping generalizations about Jewish people, but make similar generalizations about Black people.

By class I mean that the type of knucklehead dog ownership that people have talked about crosses racial lines seems related to thugster types, which come in all colors.
Have you ever noticed I've never disproved any of the generalizations? Most of it is "why can't black people do this and this and this" or what amounts to being jealous that another ethnic group has had far more 'success'. All silly, racist (ironic) nonsense from the separatist crowd that is remarkably insecure and blind to the real meaning of the phrase "melting pot". They've been ignoring it for so long they think absorption = assimilation.

This thread is a generalization about pits. If you can't see that the pits rep comes from spin (you never hear about good pits, only the bad ones) based on who tends to own them (poor people), I can't help you. And if you can't seperate out Jew talk from talk about how blacks tend to treat their pets (and children- whoopings are the same principle.). ...you're on AP, this site is full of accounts on how being black and the expectations of being black (culture) have affected our lives.
My "generalization" comes from living in big head pit on a long heavy chain culture. It's true, it's not pretty but it's true.

You finding it offensive or the fact that I defend jews does not take away my right to say it or make my point any less valid.

^^^^
This thread is a discussion about pit bulls. That long chain culture you are talking about is not exclusive to Black folks.

I'm not offended. It's Just an observation. Defend or don't defend whoever you want.
