AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Ugh, I've been fighting with my poor scalp for the longest time. It keeps flaking and getting itchy even. I have permed hair (tho I have thought about wearing it natural but that's someday, not today) and use Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioner for permed and colored hair and before that I would use the neutralizing shampoo that would come with the perm kits (There was quite a bounty wracked up).

Doing some research, I am starting to suspect that the culprit is my shampoo. I oil my hair with Mega Care Olive Oil and I drink water (tho I am starting to drink more). What would you suggest to help me out?

You might be allergic to the shampoo you are using. Pantene Pro-V Shampo contain Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate which are generally safe but are known to cause eye and skin irritation, Why they decide to still use it in their products, i dont know, But try peppermint oil.. put a few drops in some water and spray it on your scalp.. peppermint oil is has analgesic qualities to heal scalp inflammation..
Hope that helps!!
And right before I was about to head out to the store, thank you! I will keep this in mind. Anyone else got anything?
I came back from the store and got Cream of Nature shampoo for Dry and flaky scalp. Hopefully that'll work.

EDIT: Just seen reviews on it. Apparently it seems I would do better for my hair just setting it on fire. V_V

Burt Bees makes shampoos? I've had my hair permed since I was a kid too.

My scalp did not improve until I stopped getting perms and relaxers.

Weeeeeeeeell....I was afraid I was gonna get that. v.v I live with my mom who thinks that going natural will destroy my hair (odd thinker she is) and we already have enough of an unspoken riff so I've been holding that off for the longest while so going natural may not be my friend right now until I head to Japan for the JET program.
Maybe switch to or search out shampoo w/o SLS or ALS (Whole Foods or similar stores have shampoo bases w/o SLS or ALS)? Maybe switch from washing with shampoo to washing with conditioner and then shampoo'ing at the end of the month? Maybe a scentless, gentle shampoo- you might have to hit the drug store and get some medicated shampoo. When I had scalp problems before I stopped perming (the exact same as yours) I turned to Sulfur 8 hair grease and washed bi-weekly with. ..something medicated, can't remember the name. Peppermint EO in water spritz will definitely help.

How often do you wash? If you're washing too frequently since permed hair/scalp is very fragile that could be causing it. Or if you don't do it frequently enough that could cause itching and flaking.

I know how you feel- I resented being told what to do with my hair especially in an intra-hateful way by someone who's only speaking about what they don't know (how to take care of their actual hair) and every time I'd bring it up my family would go, "oh, she's just rebelling" and dismiss it as if I'm supposed to love, like, enjoy being told what to do down to my hair. Right. 3 or 4 years later I proved them all wrong and they always talk about how thick my hair is. She just doesn't want to turn over the reigns and let you control you. Destination, Japan!

Edit: I am soooo allergic to Cream of Nature's stuff. All of their stuff makes me break out.
oooh. im in japan right now. fukui prefecture...
does your mom do your hair for you? is there any sort of way to i g n o r e her?

Yea dry flaky scalp has been ancient memory for me since going natural. Before I went natural I gave up conventional beauty products and switched to the more plant-based chemicals low man-synthesized chemical stuff and I saw major improvements to the condition of my scalp.
Have you tried this shampoo called Nizoral? It's a little expensive but i've found that it helps with Itchy, dry, and flaky scalps. It might also be a vitamin deficiency. You should find a good dermatologist that knows how to treat "Black Hair". I say that cause i've had my run-ins with white dermatologists who didn't know what works for black skin. My dermatologist is awesome! She's knows my skin inside and out. Everything she's suggested to me worked! Also I too was given perms since a young age. I used to be super addicted to them! It's kinda hard giving it up but at some point you'll find that it needs to be done. I know it's hard to do the things you want to do when you're still living with your parent, they have a huge influence on you. I didn't stop getting perms until i moved out and went to college. But afterward when i went to completely natural I started to notice that I was getting less problems with my scalp and it just felt overall more healthy. But anyways I suggest to check out the Nizoral shampoo, do some research on the links between itchy scalp and vitamin deficiencies,...cause you might just need some vitamins..... and find yourself a good, black dermatologist.

I hope this helps! :D
Oh, thanks for the help everyone! Keep them coming!

Mille d. Sade, I was thinkin about that, getting medicated shampoo. I want that to be my last stand tho since getting medicated kinda makes me go "Noooooo, I don't have dandruff. Only my sister got it and not me" (It's a mental thing >.>) I'll try looking for a non SLS/ALS shampoo, take back this Creme of Nature stuff. It has red clover and aloe in it, it has peppermint in it too but if I remember right, clover can make stuff go numb and it still uses SLS. Haven't tried it but the reviews horrify me. I would have to try this co-washing but I already wash my hair pretty few as it stands, every 2-3 weeks. I'm active so I would wash practically weekly in the summer tho. Yeah, it does suck dealing with family. If anything, should I go natural my mom is prolly gonna go, "It's cuz you been hanging with those White people!" (Her reasoning for a lot of the different things I do.) I also kinda worry I won't be able to wear my hairfalls anymore.

A. Matsimela, Oooh, doing what? I wanna go to Kanazawa for JET. My mom perms it for me but there's no way to ignore her mouth.

Obsidian, could you recommend some labels?

Wendy Turner, hmmm, dermatologists sound like money and lots of it. I have looked up Nizoral but I'm not sure if it sells in normal stores like Rite Aid. I think it does and I just wiped it from memory. I'm extremely healthy and I apparently keep up with my vitamins and water (I found out the hard way) since I worry of having an imbalance of anything.
