I've noticed for a while that very few women smoke marijuana in comparison to those that use alcohol and other drugs. While some of the women I know use it socially, the presence of any who regularly smoke weed is scant. I'm not saying that this a problem or anything, I'm just wondering, why?

This may also explain why most "Stoner Movies" are centered around men getting marijuana, food and/or "chicks, man".

Well?

I read in this book about Rastafari women by Obiagele Lake that traditionally women weren't allowed to smoke with the men. It's just how their culture was. I read the book a long time ago, but I remember it mentioning Rastas being very sexist sometimes, and some of the women did smoke or wanted to. It's like they were subordinate or something, that's actually the title of the book, "Subordination in the midst of liberation theology".

As far as american culture goes, I'm not so sure. Personally I think marijuana is gross, and makes your breath smell like ass, so I don't smoke it that much. Only when I go hang out with this other afropunk guy who smokes all the time. I have like two puffs and I'm cool.

I think to take it a step further, maybe now people don't smoke because they don't want a dirty UA and are looking for jobs. That is definitely a deterrent.
There are plenty of female weed heads out there. All the ones I know are quite fucked up.

Alcohol makes you barf and that can't smell too good either, : P

I can see employment as a reason people wouldn't want to snoke, but I'm curious about women, specifically. Its not like we're the only people looking for jobs.

To Les:
Yea, I started that movie, kinda funny but a little depressing...especially when she says "...economics didn't work out so good..." lol.

I see a lot of talk/movies/tv/etc that touch on functional male potheads but womena are hardly depecited as functional drug users (unless that drug is alcohol, ciggarettes, etc).
Definitely agree with that, I was just trying to say that they both have cons than can each be solved/avoided easily (mints!)

Interesting what you said about the female stoner you know, maybe I'm just not around enough people because I've seen..like..two around my way.

Pill poppers, diet pill addicts, baseheads, and so on in film and books...dunno if i'd exactly call them 'functional'...same with the male space cadets.

IRL i know functional ppl who take "drugs".

I remember reading that same book. Turned me off on Rastafarianism. I don't need the same old shit in another title.
yeah the book was awesome though. but it def turned me off on rasta. i have this reggae song on my i-tunes that's by a woman and she's talking about wanting to get high and she's telling the men to let her smoke with them. i'll see if i can figure out who sings it. the cd is called "holding up half the sky: women in reggae" and the song is called "one draw".

so yeah it's an issue jenny. maybe there aren't a lot of women smokers.

Of course, I'm using the term "functional" very loosely; more like "they can get up and do w/e they want to do". In movies/books/etc you only hear of unmotivated slackers or women in "trouble". I brought this up b/c I've been picking up on a lot of sexism amongst stoners and in "stoner culture" and it's always annoyed the hell out of me; so recently I figured "I'll just find some ladies who smoke and see what they go through " and behold...their are (practically) none.

I've been asking around lately and alot of the women that don't smoke (that I know) either just never tried it, tried it and didn't like it or have this "Reefer Madness" attitude about it (most were of the second kind). I'm not sure if this is true for most (since I only asked a handful of people).

To CPZ:
That book sounds interesting! I never learned that Rastfari Women couldn't smoke with men; but the homophobia put me off :(

in seattle we have HEMPFEST and i'm sure there are a ton of female smokers there. i never went to it but i'm sure it's coming up. you should do a documentary or something on it. that'd be awesome.

there is sexism everywhere. i'm sure the stoner culture has it too.

Yea, I guess one reason I'm interested in "stoner sexism" (other than the obvious) is because it's just so...annoying. I know a lot of stoners that claim to be culturally aware; and we can sit and rap on race, the economy, politics, etc but let the subject of "sexism" or "feminism" come up and all the sudden its all "dude, it's not that bad". Reminds me of a time that I said something about rastafarianism (and Damien Marley) being prrrrrrrrrrrrretty homophobic and it was like I slapped the guy in the face.
Hmmm...That's a good question. I'm not sure why that is. Maybe because, like you said, the whole "stoner culture" is centered around men. The idea of a woman indulding in drugs and alcohol the same way as a man is, to most, "unthinkable", I would gather. I think it also has something to do with the idea of women being, or the idea that we should be, more "Genteel". Eh...Maybe. Sounds like a longshot now that I read that back to myself. That would explain why it isn't shown on tv *much. But is that reality? Certainly *not.

I myself don't mind weed. I haven't smoked it in more than like eight months, though. More so because I don't know anyone that has access to getting it, and I would rather not get involved with a dealer. Plus, I don't like the idea of not knowing where my weed has been(I hear chemicals are now being put into weed, unbeknowst to smokers).
