Permalink Reply by kifaru on May 11, 2011 at 9:41pm Mr Sowell I one of the top 3 Libertarian intellectuals in the U.S. For the most part his views are in line with what once was what was called "conservatism". This conservatism, is different from what goes by that name now. I admire him for making rational arguments in defense of his ideology even though I disagree with some of his attitudes or his black and white views on some subjects. The backbone of his ideology, self reliance, leads him to argue for same solutions that were the means for the rise of the upwardly mobile class of black people '60s. Prior to the the civil rights victim culture that has become so entrenched in the black community since the late '60s blacks were achieving in ways that lead to better outcomes overall for our communities and Mr Sowell advocates for a return to those morals and ideas that promoted those outcomes.
Mr Sowell provides for me a different opinion than the one that is promoted by the media. I was actually suprised that there was a man so well regarded in academia who I had never heard about until a 2 years ago. That leads me to believe that if black people are still being spoon fed by white media. We get spoon fed Cornell West because he is "cool" but we do not see Sowell and Walter E Williams.

Thoas Sowell is an intellectual hack whom I never took seriously and I have heard his spiel since the 1980's and was not impressed with either him or Walter Williams or any other so-called Black Conservative theorist. I have never been impressed with Cornell West that much or any of the so- called pop- star intellectuals on television parading their bonafides either because like Sowell they take complex questions and come up with simplistic conclusions. Most Black Conservatives remind me of Hip- Hop artists and some Black Feminists that like to talk a lot of shit in the media about Black People not doing anything but playing a victim or any other pathology they like to pontificate on but don't want to do the hard work of building an independent grass- roots political base and watching it grow in their own communities.
But if something happens to them they will run to the WHITE MAN about Black People or liberals not respecting their ideas when they have no ideas of their own and don't even engage the African- American community on any level expect to blast it in their books writings and in front of white conservative groups. That pretty much explains Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Shelby Steele and many modern Black Conservative intellectuals. When the top Black Conservative intellectual falls asleep in Supreme Court and does not ask questions( The dishonorable Clarence Thomas) hearings I can't take your people seriously.
Permalink Reply by kifaru on May 12, 2011 at 6:06am What argument has Sowell made that makes him a hack in your opinion? This man is far removed from the ranting illogicality of Glen Beck even if he did appear on his show. Unlike some in the conservative movement who pander to whatever right leaning group that they seek support from and whose views vacillate from whichever position is popular or politically expedient at the time, Sowells positions come from his logical consideration of problems often with an economists take on the solution. It is hard to argue with his position on legalizing drugs, a position that I might add that flies in the face of the current "conservative" establishments view. You certainly can not argue with his position that diversity for diversity's sake has not solved the problems of the African American community or at least those who most need solutions to their problems.
Sowell's positions eschew the naked racialism of many authors. He has not, as you put it, had to run to the WHITE MAN, because his positions are not racially based nor beholden to any ideology that depends on race as its cornerstone. Likewise Mr Sowell does not have a problem with lambasting the people whose position is non position i.e. stating that you do not value this or that person's position without stating any specifics about that positions such as how you dismissed Mr Sowell's, Mr Williams', and Mr Steele's ideas. For example, if as you say " they have no ideas of their own and don't even engage the African- American community on any level" (my emphasis) why is it you or I have read their works? We are both obviously black or at least I am, and by extension members of our respective black communities. Taking all that into account would mean we have been engaged at some level by their works if we took time to read them.

Permalink Reply by The Deacon on May 12, 2011 at 2:03pm I don't know much about Thomas Sowell. I read some things by Cornell West years ago; but I can't even remember what it was about. I'll read just about anything; it does not need to be perfect but it must be an honest attempt to explain our situation. How can we have a honest discussion about the exploited black community, poverty, mis education and under education without colonialism taking center stage? We're acting like Fanon & Nkrumah, who were involved in revolution and not just appearing on talk shows, didn't lay the ground work for progressive theories. Have we forgotten Malcolm X, who would be turning in his grave just about now listening to this rubbish by Sowell.
@Kifaru, don't ask me what I disagree with, I just explained it at the top. We can't have an honest discussion about our plight without colonialism taking center stage. These so called intellectuals can talk about everything else, but not a mention of the CIA flooding the black community with Nicaraguan dope. See the 60 minute piece form the 90's. Or the continued underfunding of schools in the black community. Only thing I blame the black community for is not being outraged enough to challenge the different government agencies for control of our affairs.

So, You are admitting that you don't know what you are talking about. Firstly, what has he written that makes you think that he does not know the history of colonialism? What makes you think that your ideas are at odds with Mr Sowell's? What we're discussing is Sowell not the post colonial effects of colonialism on Africa or people of African descent. You have got to do better deacon. You seem to be making the same kind of arguments that Palin and her ilk make; little substance amd no relevance to the subject at hand. Do better or at least try to move the discussion forward. Don't be a crab in the barrel. Try discussing not and not give ranting sermons about things that are not relevant to the topic at hand.
Deacon? Deacon of what? I guess you practicing the slave masters religion 'cuz there ain't no Deacons in Afacan* religion. Just kidding. Just breaking your balls a little bit.
