AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

So, maybe this has been done already, but I'd like to know how and what people think and feel about today's fashion and apparel- guys and gals. Where it is/been/going, that type of thing. Personally I feel that it is relatively important to at least have some sense of individual style; like I don't immediately go with one look, I just try to mix it up a little bit. Thoughts and opinions would be great.

Everyone should just dress like this...

I fullheartedly concur. KanYe (pretty sure that's him) is the king/future of today's fashion!
Well, almost... IMO
Actually they all look pretty good and fun, except the dude who is second from the left.

He is just doing a bit too much in the direction of the Village People or Queen Mary weekend performer with those animal print pants.

I like all the other elements of his outfit, truly, but he should have put on some plain striped pants instead, would work better.

Man, that guy who is second from the right, I LOVE his hat!!!!! EXCELLENT!

I like this look too. Sharp and fun. You could play with it, the different elements (jacket, shoes/boots/socks, colors).

I have no concern with what's in trend and what's not. I know what I like, and every other idiot my age can continue looking like a trend obsessed asshole, spending ridiculous amounts of money every time a new trend is released. I don't like bright colors, pants or patterns...and won't wear anything that isn't flattering (So no American Apparel) for me. I wear whatever I want and haven't paid full price for an item of clothing in years. Goodwill/ inner city thrift stores/ surplus stores/ outlets/ fabric stores= my clothing source. My uniform is pretty much dark high waist skirts paired with slinky tank tops or a cut up band shirt, and a long dark cardigan.
You're right JL. When I attended my niece's high school graduation a few years ago, I was surprised that nearly every single one of the graduating class (and this is a Catholic girl's school) was wearing HUGE platform shoes of various styles, that were exactly like many of us who graduated at my public school in 1980.

Is the fashion copy gap running about 10-15 years?

Fashion these days I think is kind of sad. People have really lost their creativity! The best thing about style is making it your own. I don't think enough people do that. On my campus all the girls look exactly same. They all have huge bags, bright color everything, the same hair style, and the same shoes. The same thing goes for the guys they all have their pants low and their fitted hats, and their nice sneakers. I'm not against any of it (minus the low pants) but it would just be nice to see people change it up and really express who they are through their attire. There are a few people that have their own style whether people like it or not! I LOVE THAT! but for the most part its just a bunch of clones.
I think the thing to remember is that every and anyone can have the latest fashion its only a matter of money (in some cases lack of), but only individuals have STYLE!
Well if you're torn about clothes, then...

wow. my friend was telling me about this pic a few weeks ago. i thought she was exaggerating. it was everything that i would hoped and more. i'm finished with the one in the leopard pants!

anyway, i'm in school now studying fashion design. however, my personal look is less than polish and i'm still in a sort of transitional phase. i am trying to change my current look (jeans, timbs, six year old chucks, thermals, band tshirts) and meld my current influences together in a way that won't look clownish. I'm super influenced by the the punk/drag queen/50's bad girl/hood chick/glam rocker/glamazon/stripper. It's tad worrisome because none of those looks are subtle, tasteful, or subdued and I've unfortanately inherited my mother's penchat for the tacky and fabulous. I'll probably wind up looking like Hedwig or Kanye's homeboy in the leopard.
