AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

With the falling of the Music Industry as we knew it... I've seen the brains of the Indie Artist and I've a lot just give up... what do you think are good reasons for a act to stay indie, go major or when should they (if ever) throw in the towel..?

Just make good music to be honest, fuck the labels shit, either way you got to eat and bills to pay.

What do you mean when you say you have "seen the brains"?

I think it is just tougher than ever to make a living solely by playing music. Maybe now is the time to look at playing music as your passion and find another way to support yourself.

The big problem I see with a major now is going in the hole with the record company. This was going on even before file sharing. At least if you record on your own dime and own everything this won't happen.

If you do music for fame and fortune...that's the wrong reason to do it.

You might as well apply for a job at Wal-Mart if you try to sign with major now.  The only difference is that Wal-Mart actually pays you, majors put you in debt as as CE said.  Nothing wrong with Wal-Mart, just don't expect to become regional manager in a year because you stock clothes well or become a WM stockholder because you're a good cashier.  Same as expecting a major label to make you a rich & famous star.

If you want to be involved in music for money, go independant.  Because you have to love your product enough to push it hard and you can sell it with no middleman.  Now fame & fortune?  Independant still might be the way until a major gets to you because majors still want artists who have developed a following already.  No one will bestow fame (and a little fortune) on you unless you're one of those Clive Davis-racially-ambiguous-to-reach-all-demographics type female singers (i.e: Alicia Keys, that blonde UK chick, Marsha Ambrosious, etc.).

Personally I think it's OK to do music for fame & fortune.  It's just that it won't likely give your music heart enough to last or hold real fans.  It probably won't give you much longevity but it's your choice.  Lady Gaga the "Fame Monster" is an example of that.  I don't really dig her stuff but somebody does.  She has a serious machine behind her and at least she's honest about what she's doing.  I'm doubtful of her lasting power but it's all good, it doesn't bother me.

If you love the art and the music you are doing, you'll do it regardless of commercial success.  When you stop being inspired to create then the towel will probably throw itself in.

You have to really believe in and love your music. I think that doing so from the deepest part of you will not bring that much fame and fortune as opposed to making music and having an image that most consumers like because they are familiar with it. There are a gang of  people who are very talented but hardly original because they follow a certain formula to be successful.

I thought INDIE was independent. from writing the song to the distribution.

oh well

the evolution of "emo" is a sad tale as well.

As someone who's on the verge of launching a record label, I say go for labels that care for the music and the artists. To the majors, you are only a number, something to make money off. They don't care about your vision or your music. Moreover, indies tend to be more innovative
who cares
to keep control of there music record companies take away control of your music
