AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

Some people consider video games to be an unproductive hobby...

Some people are fine with casual gaming and/or frequent gaming in strict moderation...

To some, an interest in gaming may be considered a mark of immaturity, i.e., a (wo)man-child syndrome of sorts.

To some, video games in general are considered social commentary.

(I hate icebreakers...)

My question is this: do you think there's an age limit on video gaming?  And if so, at what age should older gamers hang up their joysticks?

I've been wondering about that since BattleRaper and Rapeman hit US shores. Most North American and British guys seemed offended or way too creeped out by both of those games, tho. Slightly different in other countries. Italy and france enjoyed them.

BattleRaper went to far even for Japan so BattleRaper II was a little toned down but not much.

I think boys and immature men always find ways to act out the fantasies handed to them by really really sexist media. You just don't hear too much about it but it happens in schools and stuff all the time. Usually the girls won't tell anyone. And if anyone else does know they'll just throw the "boys will be boys" blanket over it.

O.o

I didn't know that any of those had made it to the States. Never thought they would -- naivete.
Maybe it was just a fandub I saw. Idk, a guy played the CDRom some years back and posted it on his blog.

I'll have to find out for sure once I get home. From the sentiments I've on a couple gaming boards, I don't think it was published for a U.S. release, but it could've very well been a legit import copy...

So, it looks like BattleRaper was only published for release in Japan, although I'm sure imports/homebrews can be easily had, 'cause it's 2010.

Rapeman is apparently based on a manga series called "The Rapeman"; I'm guessing you probably know more of the backstory than I do. Looks like none of the games from that series have been released in the U.S. either, although it appears to be popular enough that it's probably not hard to come by any of them. There was a band named after Rapeman, also...

Kinda difficult to keep this thread going once the rape genre shows up in the discussion...
lol. Rape is awkward.
NO AGE LIMIT!
Everyone that made games mainstream is in their 60s and still playing if not making.

Eh, y'know me always got a link for something even if it's a few weeks late:
http://imamp.colum.edu/3gsummit/ < girls, gaming, and gender.
obv rapeman didn't have girls (as humans) in mind when it was developed.

Also, I wish my nerves weren't fried but even as a kid i couldn't play those scary games like the scary parts of super mario brothers without freaking out so i stuck w/ tetris or katamari damacy (<3) or that game where you're pushing a water droplette along as a tiny being of some sort. lol--apparently i play on other ppls' consoles... and obv this was like 6 years ago now. ah... and duh that spongebob waiting tables iphone game is a ...game. that's cool. so the pressure doesn't freak me out just violence and threat of death. :\
Ah, links are definitely welcome, and this one in particular is definitely of interest to me. Will comment on that later.

… Was thinking I might see how my daughter takes to Katamari Damacy; she’s intimidated by the thought of competitive gaming, but seems to enjoy strategy-based stuff (which pleases me immensely). She doesn’t seem to mind the violence, but she’d rather watch somebody else shoot, kill, or die, apparently. I’m often wary of exposing her to the trendy hallmarks of my (gaming) generation. Putting certain tropes and stereotypes into context, for example, proves to be a little difficult on the rare occasion she’s up long enough to watch me play anything.

My sister used to hate playing violent games. Or she wouldn’t play if it wasn’t possible to play/win as a team. For the most part, I figured that the “beat up everybody – save the girl” premise probably wasn’t enough to garner her interest in certain games, which was perfectly understandable to me. Certain genres are oversaturated with skeletal storylines that seem like afterthoughts on the part of the game designers. I feel like my intelligence has been insulted if the gameplay is shitty, too.

The threat of death makes some zany things possible. I’ll spare you my war stories, though, lol.

I’ve gotta look around for this water droplet game you mentioned.
