= HOUSE OF LIES --- Don Cheadle's series about a crew of corporate marketers (I think) who use unscrupulous means to win accounts from businesses. Well-written & acted Don kills it of course and Kristen Bell and the cast are all great. The ep with the Havard recruits meeting the staff and heads was ill; Don was devious. Good backstories too.
= HELL ON WHEELS --- Series about the building of the first transcontinental train line in the US led by an ex-Confederate soldier and Common as brother working on rails also. Didn't see the entire marathon of the first season but what I saw was entertaining, Common kicks some ass and gets some ass in the show and exercise more dramatic muscle.
= CALIFORNICATION (season 5) --- Our decadent writer Hank Moody gets himself into escapades when he's hired by the RZA (here named classicly Samurai Apocalypse) to help him write his memoirs. RZA does a good job playing a different aspect of his personality, probably a Wu Forever Bobby Digital type. Megan Goode does well and looks stunning as RZA's girlfriend.
= HOLLYWOOD COMPLEX --- Interesting series showing on Fuse, sort of 90210 of now, about twenty-somethings living in an apartment complex angling to to break big in Hollywood. Glossy as it is they show a realistic side of the business and how deals are brokered through weird connections and circumstances. Anyone considering a mainstrem job in films or working in entertainment (Lyn baby) should check it out.
= NEWSROOM --- Series on HBO about the behind the scens drama of controversial newsman and the staff on his show. Created by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, The West Wing, A Few Good Men, Moneyball) this has all the fast-paced wordiness of his productions. But its still one of the best series I've seen in a while. Past the direct and indirect jabs made at consevative politicians and the Tea Party (using their own real on-camera statements), the show gets deep into the personal lives of the leading characters giving everybody a lot of background and dialogue to chew on. The last episode speaking on the illegal phone tapping done now in the government was hardcore, as was the one with the Black gay Temple University professor who was supposed to be supporting openly anti-gay & racist PA senator Rick Santorum.
= TOTALLY BIASED --- Comedy/Talk show starring W. Kamau Bell giving his personal spin current events, executive produced by Chris Rock. Sort of a Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher crossed with HBO's Chris Rock Show. It's pretty funny so far, I'm worried it won't last to long. What it has going for it is that it's weekly as opposed to nightly and that it's only a half hour long so they don't have to stretch to far wearing out material. Hopefully it will get stronger and more confrontational as it progresses.
You know, I hate the sister Tara's character more than Sookie.
She's still a corny, 2-dimensional weakling who now is not simply slave but now a vampire slave as she said on the show. Wow, what an advancement for women of color on TV. I only lay part of the blame on her, Hollywood roles are screwed up for sisters.

= SONS OF ANARCHY season 5 premiere --- Hmm we'll see. Okay but the Black characters? I don't know, see the SOA thread here for my predictions...
= BAD GIRLS CLUB / GIRLFRIEND CONFIDENTIAL --- I see the look on your face, ha. This happens when you're unemployed living with folks who have cable. Cute & built chicks (some more than others) living their lives in front of cameras 24-7. The Bad Girls try too hard and Eva & the Girl-Cons seem deluded. Mental cotton candy; looks better than it actually tastes with zero nutritional value and possibly harmful. I'd say "don't judge me" but it's not like I seriously care, bring back Flavor of Love!
= LOVE & HIP HOP: ATLANTA --- Hahahaaa! Aww man, now this is some different junk food, mental Capt'n Crunch in rice milk; entertaining while slightly educational on how not to act. If you ain't up this most classic of crazy corny reality shows, then you won't understand when I say "I'mma send yo azz back to da schtrip club..." ha. Stevie J, Benzino, Joseline, Rasheeda, K. Michelle (who can actually sing), Lil Scrappy, etc. Thank you Mona Scott.
= UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS: THE STORY OF JACK JOHNSON --- Had to devour some health food right? Heehahee. This PBS documentary by Burns details the life, fighting style and cultural significance of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson. In everyway he was his own man, from fighting how he wished to carousing with who he wished (mainly white women, often many at a time). This brother was waaay beyond gangsta, he attracted the love and hate of the public in ways Kanye, Morrissey, Muhammad Ali and Madonna couldn't in 3 lifetimes. Gold teeth, flyest gear, fast cars, massive cash, women and intellect that was too much for the early 1900's or anytime for that matter. I mean dude created & patented the Monkey Wrench while he was in jail! What?! Beyond renaissnce man...
Gotdamn! Nobody watches TV anymore? Y'all just too cooool for me, ha. Re-bumping here since last fall, pow!...
= SCANDAL --- First off, Shonda Rhimes baby get that money. Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and now Scandal. You winning! But being completely real, that over-the-damn-top, rapidfiredialoguewherenoonestopstotakeabreath gets mad annoying after awhile. Seems they're doing a caffinated knock-off Aaron Sorkin's (West Wing, The Social Network, The Newsroom) already caffinated hyper-dialogue. I assume this is what has the audience locked in & I can't complain too much being it's a verrry different and stronger presentation of a Black woman in power. I just ain't into it (yet?). Well forget me, SRMD (Shonda Rhimes Making Dollars) strictly business. I sure ain't hating.
I've been on a tear watching independantly-produced programs broadcast on YouTube and elseswhere. I swear these sharp intelligent & funny shows have been holding my attention stronger than regular broadcast TV shows. Most of you I'm sure are up on AP friends Misadventures Of An Awkward Black Girl. Let me list the others I've been checking:

...and there are many more. I am very happy that there are so many diverse shows and all these I listed just happen to have majority to totally to Black casts in interesting, non-stereotypical roles. Truly proves the content, talent and audience is out there for interestign work. And some are international like "Brothers" & "Venus" from the UK. Check 'em out, you won't be disappointed.

Permalink Reply by Rosenda on That documentary about Jack Johnson was FASCINATING AWESOME, XDM9. I'd not known anything about him when that film first aired out here on PBS a few years ago, but I found out my parents knew ALL about him. He was a big deal.
Lately on tv I really enjoyed:
NCIS ( the regular one, Ducky is great, Dinozzo is annoying, Gibbs is hot, Ducky's kinda hot too, the way people try to get away with murder etc is interesting, but the Los Angeles one with LLCJ is kinda boring so I don't watch it).

Channel 5 news in the morning, sometimes in the evening at 10PM
That university presentation on the UC channel that the lady gave about the history of the kosher food production industry and current changes was so interseting I watched it twice.
I also got to see the UC channel presentation in two parts that was the panel group about the history of UCLA'S Ethnic Studies program, how it got started, and all the people and professors involved over the past five decades. It was so cool to hear my sister speak in the panel and I had no idea how she'd ended up on Oral History because she'd been feeding interviewee suggestions already for 10 years to their dept, and their boss eventually hired her because of that, I think. It was also cool to see the youngest and longest running chancellor, Charles Young, up there talking about the progression and expansion and beginning of the program. I had no idea before that he literally was the first person to give any okays for them to start and he fought hard for them to all be created. Studies from the Black, Latino, Asian, Jewish, Native American, etc etc etc students who were not allowed to have a curriculum and programs of their own before the 60's. Man, it was COOL to see how that all came to be. It's HUGE HUGE information.
= HEMLOCK GROVE --- The new Netflix original series. Very slow start but getting better, the sister on there is hardcore. But her alone can't make me suggest this one. More werewolf/changeling beast stories. As much as I can't stand much about True Blood, I respect that they keep the pace moving with pulpy melodrama & sex. Hemlock is TB on a plasma drought, their ain't enough action in it's hemglobin to keep you awake throughout. Halfway through the season & we'll see how much better it gets.

-UK show called Peep Show. My friend turned me on to this show when we watched a few episodes on DVD. If you haven't heard of it, check it out. You will piss yourself laughing while saying at the same time "I can't believe they just did that". One of the quotable lines: Mark to Jeremy, "I only asked her to be a hooker. You'd think I was asking her to go into telesales or something". Classic.
-True Blood. I haven't seen it in a long time since the season 5 finale when Sookie was getting ready to run for her life. The last season was okay but my only complaint that they could have done a lot more with Christopher Meloni's character instead of abruptly killing him off. Tara as a vampire is a lot more interesting than her usual role as victim/token-black-sidekick-to-lead-character. Definitely like the idea of pairing Tara with Pam (who gets the greatest lines on the show).
