I just think the fixation on Jimi is a little lopsided. Totally not what a black rocker should aspire to be. Not a good mold and I'm not just talking about the dying young either. Just not my kind of champion.

Permalink Reply by Wheredawhitewomenat on June 3, 2009 at 11:47am Jimi was no saint. But then, neither am i. Neither are you. Neither is anybody. Jimi may have aspired towards many things in his life, but i seriously doubt being able to claim that his shit smelled like roses was one of them.
But as far as the question being asked with this thread is concerned......this story has been circulating around for many years. i always heard that his manager was a dirty motherfucker who was about to get fired, and he knew that Jimi would be worth more dead than alive, so he did the dirty deed listed above with the barbs and wine. The other story is that the ambulance attendant was simply incompetent and had Jimi laying on his back while he was choling on his vomit, but i never bought that one.
Well, when i talk about Jimi not being a saint, i'm certainly not trying to excuse any of the messed up shit he did while he was still with us, any more than i excuse any of the messed up shit that cats like Ike Turner, Al Green, James Brown, Miles Davis, Bob Marley, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Marvin Gaye, Rick James, Arthur Lee, Michael Jackson and Billy Preston did and have done to women (and in Michael and Billy's cases, to children.)
i personally stopped putting people (especially musicians) on pedestals a very, very, very, very long time ago. In my mind, i don't paint rosey and idealistic portraits of absolutely anybody, dead, living or in between, i just know that if we were to determine whose contributions (musical or otherwise) we're gonna value and recognize based solely on the purity of their thoughts, words and deeds, then we would value and recognize absolutely nobody. And that's a fact.
Truly, it is only a matter of degrees of foulness one has done, and the extent to which one's foul deeds are known of, spoken of, and documented. Everybody has done some shit. Everybody. And if you think you haven't, you are either in denial, or you just ain't done it yet.
Bob Marley beat and cheat on Rita and sexually assualted her repeatedly, Fela Kuti infected more than a few of his 50 wives with the same HIV he eventually died from, Arthur Lee was an all around dopefiend who i heard all kinds of crazy stories about (from pimping his girlfriends to knocking women up and abandoning them), and Billy Preston was charged with being in possession of child pornography not long before he died a few years back.
So what do you do when you learn shit like this......especially when they are dead already? Burn all their records that you own? Stop playing their songs when you DJ? Stop humming their rhythms and melodies when they come to your head? Go out of your way to discredit them whenever their accomplishments are praised? Go out of your way to contradict any truths that they spoke? Credit other people for blazing the trails that they blazed? Simply start declaring that their music really sucked and that what they created was really nothing all that special?
Not a pretty picture, but not that cut and dried either......at least not to me. Does that make ME a bad person, or an apologist for their misdeeds?
