... the other Black experience

You think this is possible? Maybe some of my AP'ers with medical training can chime in on this.

Jimi Hendrix was murdered by his manager, according to a new book by a former roadie. James "Tappy" Wright alleges that Hendix's manager, Michael Jeffrey, once drunkenly confessed to killing the guitarist by stuffing pills into his mouth and washing them down with several bottles of red wine.

Jeffrey -- who stood to collect $2 million as a beneficiary on Hendrix's life insurance policy -- feared Hendrix was planning to fire him in favor of a new handler, according to a report about the book, titled 'Rock Roadie', as reported in Mail on Sunday. Wright claims Jeffrey -- who died in a plane crash in 1973 -- told him in 1971 that Hendrix was "worth more to him dead than alive."

Hendrix died in September 1970. An ambulance crew found the 27-year-old musician's body at London's Samarkand Hotel, in the room of an acquaintance named Monika Dannemann. His cause of death was listed as barbiturate intoxication and inhalation of vomit.

Wright writes that Jeffrey confessed, "I was in London the night of Jimi's death and together with some old friends ... we went round to Monika's hotel room, got a handful of pills and stuffed them into his mouth ... then poured a few bottles of red wine deep into his windpipe ... That son of a bitch was going to leave me. If I lost him, I'd lose everything."

Let me just say that I LOVE the twist that this post took. Very reminiscent of old AP :).
Yup, someone grab a shovel it's time to start shoveling shit!
...and that's why you don't catch me rockn no Von Dutch geah.

Exactly. Miles Davis is my favorite musician. But he was a pimp, heroin addict, abused his wives, neglected his talent, and wasn't beyond some pretty racist rants in his auto-biography. Kenneth Howard aka Von Dutch built some of the nicest custom motorcycles ever - raving neo-nazi. I could go on, but like you said El, the talent has to be seperated from the person often to be appreciated.

So what do you do when you learn shit like this......especially when they are dead already? Burn all their records that you own? Stop playing their songs when you DJ? Stop humming their rhythms and melodies when they come to your head? Go out of your way to discredit them whenever their accomplishments are praised? Go out of your way to contradict any truths that they spoke? Credit other people for blazing the trails that they blazed? Simply start declaring that their music really sucked and that what they created was really nothing all that special?

Not a pretty picture, but not that cut and dried either......at least not to me. Does that make ME a bad person, or an apologist for their misdeeds?
You make a decision what is heavier to YOU. Is their transgression heavier than their talent/ music/ contribution to the art world? Is causing people pain excusable if you are talented? Does it matter AFTER you have become a fan more than it does if you are a brand new fan? Does this filter of the evil they have visited on others suddenly change the sweetness of the pitch of their tune? Only YOU can decide for yourself.

I tell you what, it will be a fantastic day when BRILLIANT no longer = disturbed and driven by evil.

yeah, now THIS is more like it.
Old AP steelo, indeed.

One thing though,... I had no clue about Bob Marley beating his wife.
And yes, it would be SO nice to have artistic brilliance without the disturbing details.
Any of yall remember Gary Glitter?
He's known for that '70s chant rock song with the gazoo (that gets used at every ball-game), and the other song I love- "c'mon, COMMME ON! c'mon, COMMME ON!"
He got convicted of pedophilia.

Michael Jackson?
That's a debate that will never fully get solved.
I, personally, feel he did NOT molest any of those boys.

I want to believe that Michael Jackson did not molest those boys, but, when there's smoke...
I find it very difficult to enjoy his music.
Bob Marley? Well...Rita is doing very well for herself, seeing that she's benefiting from his estate. Not that it excuses anything. Maybe I'm being a hypocrite. Maybe Marley's music is that good.
As far as Hendrix beating up on women, I find that hard to beleive, women loved that guy and of all the shit that popped up over the years about Hendrix, this is the first time I heard about him beating women or throwing phones at them(weren't they attached to walls back then). I call bullshit on that rumor.
As far as his death, I heard that he owed a few bucks to the mob. Money he used to build his studio.
Just sayin'.
I'll say it's more for boys than it is for girls. It's definitely exclusive- he's a hero for boys in that childhood boyish way- "I wanna grow up and be like Jimi" part of the reason a lot of black alts identify with him is because he was a black male. Never been that into Jimi. Probably because I can't identify with the male-ness of certain things when I am not a male or am not the kind of female who will fall into the role I need to in order to fit into a very male dominated world. To be defined by men, see what I'm saying?

This whole niche where Jimi fits in as a hero has got nothing for someone like me- it's all of the boys.

Too much patriarchal-ness for me- that whole masculine world where women are regulated to background roles- it's 99% of everything. Jimi didn't blaze a trail for me. For men he did. And that's cool. I'm just tired of hearing a lot of dead musicians being touted as idols when all they did (in the end) was get on drugs, use women and die young. Not my kind of idol.

Beating and other forms of abuse against women are so damn common it's no surprise that all these men we/people idolize have done it. It's just something that exists, that men do. It's no shocker that Bob raped Rita when she didn't want to have sex- I always took him for that kind of old fashioned type of dude that thinks what the man says/wants goes. Sam with Bad Brains- that kind of old fashioned mentalities involved in Ras empower men and empower women in a flimsy way that definitely won't last.

It's no surprise that Jimi did all that stuff- that's the "in" thing for male rock stars to abuse women. It's cool, it's glorified even. The war against women is also A LOT more domestic than you might think- really, really common in every day life in varying degrees of pigheadedness. It's almost complete suffering.

Anyone who's surprised is kidding themselves.

Nope, can't say they will. What's your beef with Jimi?

Will black alts ever stop talking about Jimi?.. . .probably not.

I just think the fixation on Jimi is a little lopsided. Totally not what a black rocker should aspire to be. Not a good mold and I'm not just talking about the dying young either. Just not my kind of champion.

Are you saying that Black rocker want to grow up and beat women just like Jimi? That's what they aspire to be? Maybe Black rockers admire his talent. Ever think of that? The dude was supremely talented, was his music was groundbreaking. Maybe that's what Black rockers are aspiring to be.
This is the first time I heard of Hendrix abusing women.
No. Just that the idolization of Jimi is purely for the boys. :P
And the idolization of dead rockers is silly when they pissed their potential away. :P

Ever think of THAT?

And it's ridiculous to try and deny a rock star/musician/anyone really abused women- it's REALLY common and almost reward in masculine groupie fucking culture- which is precisely what Jimi represents to me. That kind of legendary status is just for boys, not for girls.
