so make this quick. my brother mentioned how "you know how you can't touch a black womans hair." i don't know how we came to that statement but i said " i don't fuck with chics like that i'd rather an afropunk type of chic." he then says to me that black woman who don't wear weaves and wigs are the one who grew up with white folks so nobody was around to teach them about that stuff. i was like; nah nigga you buggin you been in DE to long. in hindsight i think he was offended because his wife is a weave monster. i mean personally i think weaves and wigs look pretty foolish on many woman and that the whole obsession with straight hair is likely white envy and self hatred at worst. what would my natural sisters have said to my ignorant brother?

Permalink Reply by DuskTilDawn on January 7, 2012 at 11:55am Sometimes it's really not as deep as all that, I like to wear wigs because sometimes i like to change it up a bit, long hair one day, curly and short the next. To me it's like deciding what shirt you are going to put on. Also if you get your hair braided down, weaves can be an excellent way to give your real hair a rest and time to grow. I recently just shaved all my hair off because I wanted to do something different, but if I feel like having hair down my back tomorrow I will and personally don't give a shit if someone thinks I'm doing it because I want to be white (fucking ridiculous). I am a member of Afro-Punk and was featured on Who's on top in the community, so you saying you want an AFRO-Punk type of chic, without respecting all of the different types is YOU putting women in a mold that YOU think they should be in...educate yourself....
That's just my opinion...
Permalink Reply by DuskTilDawn on January 7, 2012 at 11:56am I completely agree with this. Who are you to tell someone else THEIR reasons for wanting to do whatever the fuck they want to do , stop judging and worry about your own damn self lol ....

Permalink Reply by kifaru on January 7, 2012 at 8:51pm Weaves look fucked up to me. Anybody who denies that black people's perception of what is "acceptable" or "beautiful" is colored by living in a society where the dominant culture is white, European and straight haired is delusional or hasn't really studied the subject. What is considered nappy hair is not deemed as beautiful by this society in general. That can not be denied. That said fuck with who you want to fuck with leave the rest alone.

Permalink Reply by STeLLaMaRi on January 8, 2012 at 10:07pm "You know how you can't touch a black woman's hair." Lol Correction: You can't go around yanking and petting on Weaves and Wigs. In regards to touching natural hair if you don't know a woman "like that" asking permission first wouldn't hurt.
I do think that conforming to the largely Euro-centric American beauty standard is one of the many reasons why for the longest time a lot of black people did/do everything in their power to disguise the kinkier textures of their hair. However, I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Do I look at a woman rocking a straight style and automatically think she's a self hater ? No I do not. Same goes for weaves and wigs. It's only when a person refuses to even consider wearing their natural hair that that the Alert goes off in my head, but I will never outright condemn or label somebody over hair. Would I prefer all black women love and rock their natural hair ? Hell Yeah, but I aint mad if they wanna try a different look every now and again.
Permalink Reply by LilMissyBlack on January 8, 2012 at 10:47pm This topic again. I love weaves and wigs because they allow me to be the chameleon that I want to be. I have "good hair" by most standards and constantly get shit from people because I wear weaves. I am very limited with my own natural hair.
With my weaves, I can have blue, pink, purple or grey hair. I can have long to my butt, or a pixie cut. I can have straight hair or curly hair. I can have afro-kinky textures of hair that my natural naps will not allow. My love for hair weaves has nothing to do with conforming to European standards of beauty. I do it because I like being able to try new looks and different textures of hair without doing damage or actually cutting my hair off.
Besides, I look more "afro-punk" with my weaves than I do with my own hair. I have a very standard shoulder length bob that is quite mainstream. However, by use of extensions, I can have the crazy colored hair that seems to be required of this community.
weave, been giving black women headlice since forever
Permalink Reply by Rochelle on January 13, 2012 at 4:42pm Even though I prefer my natural hair over having a weave/perm/wig, I agree with most of the other posters here. It's really not good to judge someone as "self-hating" when all they want to do is explore some other styles.
Some of the comments here about standards of beauty are interesting, too. Women with straight hair might dominate ads, but I am always having people of all ages and races compliment me on my twists (they've been looking a whole lot better lately than they do in my pictures on here, btw ^_-). I still have to deal with the occasional ignorant comment or two, but I find that people don't generally have a problem with me wearing my hair in a natural style (job interviews aside). In conclusion, don't look down on women who aren't natural, and, if anyone wants encouragement that our society is getting over the whole "natural is bad" thing, it is out there. I live in a medium sized, conservative southern city, by the way.
