I think it all depends on what type of music they prefer to already listen too. If all they listen to is mostly hip hop or funk then I would suggest starting with/ easing them in with bands like Rage Against the Machine or Red Hot Chili peppers. If they are more musically inclined then I'd throw them in deep with good punk like the Misfits or Bad Brains. But you can't go wrong with any classic rock ( Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Led Zep) and work your way up too modern stuff (Black Sabbath -Wolfmother).
My favorites (probably because im from the west coast) are any fuzz/ surf rock bands;
(Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Nebula)
Rock/Rap hybrids(Done correctly);
(Rage Against the Machine, Street Sweeper Social Club, One Day As alA Lion)
And the obvious classics;
(Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols,
The Animals, Motörhead, Thin Lizzy,etc).

No I hadn't seen this thanks for the link!

Wow!

IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS TO HOLD US BACK by PUBLIC ENEMY is one of greatest rock albums ever, in my opinion, and Chuck D, one of the greatest frontmen. Though the album is undeniably hip hop, its foundation and delivery is all rock. Their musicianship and showmanship carried legacies from our historical greats, as well as providing a real blueprint for what a hip hop "band" could look like. (Side note; in 2008, PE performed with THE ROOTS as their backing band at The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. That was the amalgam of all the best Black music, ever).

Big up Craig, I was at that show and they tore it up!  Full crew with Flav & Griff, awesome.

MUST LISTEN TO: the money store album by death grips

when skies wash ashore by straightline stitch

EVERY Orange 9mm album

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand sevendust------------>every album

For this album, I may have to direct you a bit to the library of the college I go to. Heh! Otherwise, most of the music I recommend would probably not be pure rock music. It'll be more like trip-hop, experimental, hip-hop, etc.
