AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

As of lately , the internet and indy music channels have been overrun by OF ( or more elaborately known as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All ). They rap about every thing from rape , murder to dancing with the devil and killing cops. I knew about them before they got popular because I skate, just wanted to know if yall cared ....

I went through the OFWGKTA craze in 2010, then by Feb. of last year, (when Tyler & Hodgy performed on Jimmy Fallon) I was getting exhuasted of them.

Right now........  their schtick has worn itself out (for me).        I think the Odd Future tape (from '08) has Tyler's best production.

I wouldn't say OF is "keepin it real", (btw, what does that even mean in the 21st century?).      Some of their shit comes across a bit too contrived.

Frank is cool, but I don't see a reason to dick-ride like all the hipster mags are.     I'm happy for his (& OF's overall) success, but I'm not overwhelmed.

Syd tha kid's project (The Internet) left me very disappointed.

One thing OF managed to do (in 2011) *if nothing else* was get people talking.

From what I've watched, Hodgy & Left Brain seem to have a knack for fightin muhfuckas at their shows.

Tyler's ADHD is outta control.

I'm kinda curious about how "Wolf" is gonna sound, but I ain't fiendin for it.

"Goblin" was such a draining album.     Its definitely not as good as "Bastard", but even still,... I've been off them for a lil minute.    The shit gets to be too much after a while.

The funny thing about Frank Ocean is that I always forget that he is even affiliated with Odd Future. I always kind of mentally just put him in his own little category. But most of the hype for him is pretty well deserved in my opinion. His album is really good. He's a pretty talented and eclectic songwriter as far a r & b is concerened. His album is like the only contemporary sounding r & b you might catch me bumping proudly save for a  songs here and there by certain other artists. I quite enjoyed what he and The Weeknd did for r & b in 2011.

I also agree..

I dunno to each his own I guess. All I can say is just really sit down and take an unbiased listen. You are right, he isn't the greatest singer but his approach to songwriting is what does it for me. When I hear his songs I can actually picture everything he's saying like I'm watching a film. Storytellin! That's it! He tells stories, in depth stories in most of his songs. I really never thought about it before. He kills the Hotel California track and he murders Coldplay on that Strawberry Swing shit. He took their music and did somthing really cool with it. I know Chris Martin has to be kickin himself right now. I think his content is definitely different. Novacaine what? Sheeeit!, I didn't have THAT much fun when I went to Coachella.

can someone explain to me the appeal of Frank?

I'm not on some "I don't believe you" shit, but its just that 1) his voice isn't the most melodic, 2) his content isn't all that much different from the rest of OF.

I'm not annoyed by Frank.     But, that in itself aint enough.

Oh, if this "rap" group is associated with any of that ICP/juggalo shit in even the most remote way, well Odd Future can go and fucking burn to death in a tour bus crash! They can all fucking burn to death in huge-ass fire and take many of their dumb fucking juggalo-friendly fans with 'em too - just like Great White!

ZERO-TOLERANCE for that shit.

Those guys can't rap, Their rhymes don't rhyme. These guys depend on a generation of people that don't understand the rules. Rap is art because it takes skill. These guys have little or known. Bravado alone is not hip hop. These clowns probably don't even know what a b-boy is.

What's a "b-boy"?

I don't know man, Tyler actually isn't that bad. And neither is Earl Sweatshirt who's only claim to fame is pretty much a youtube freestyle. The other guys are average at best. There's definetely worse rappers out there. Yonkers is kinda hard. When I first heard that joint it reminded me of some Wu shit.Tyler did his thing on Sandwitches too. The joint they did on Fallon. I think if he took the game seriously which he obviously dosen't, he could be considered good. I don't think people like Nas and Pusha T would be messin with Tyler if they didn't see a spark in him. And Darkness, I don't think Odd Future is in any associated with ICP. I sorta undastand how people make the comparison but um.. no. ICP is just...not my cup of tea. Wiggers annoy me. Purposely ignorant wiggers making a mockery of hip-hop culture just for fuck's sake annoy me more. I feel like they should be wearing blackface instead of white makeup. Juggalos or jiggaboos?

A "B-Boy" is basically a break dancer.

Or if you're an old head a catch all phrase for someone that's "Down for The Culture".

*Everything after these two sentences is not aimed at the person I quoted*

Anyways OF is dope.

They write their own stuff, they produce their own stuff, they film their own stuff.

Tyler ? ill rapper, nice concepts, shoots his videos (or writes the treatments) kid is ill.

Earl ? DOPE RAPPER, you don't have to like him but he's factually sound in the skill of rapping.

He isn't off beat, all of his stuff rhymes where it should (heavy eminem inspiration), plus he's clever.

That's just two people out of the entire collective. They aren't ALL RAPPERS.

Frank Ocean is an ill singer/song writer that's pretty damn dope.

Future Jet Age of Tomorrow does instrumental Albums that seem to be influenced that whole techno sound.

The Internets has a big Pop sound to them.

And there are more people in the collective I could bring up but it's best to educate yourself so you don't come off as a hater when you say "I get bored of them like all rap herp derp".

Said it on here before, but many people have done the same thing, only better. Check Out Brotha Lynch Hung's "Loaded" or some of his other albums or some of the early Andre Nickatina stuff. I don't trip because I'm out of their demographic though. I think most of their fans are teens and people in their 20s who were too young to hear the first go round of "horrorcore". Like Mos Def said: "You might dig on the Rolling Stones/But they didn't come up with that ish on their own."

What does "his stuff rhymes where it should" mean? All the lines are supposed to rhyme. It's one thing to take poetic license it's another when your vocabulary and skill are so limited you can't come up with a rhyme.

Nas  and Pusha T deal with them cats because their careers are over and they are trying to regain relevance. I'm gonna take it way back. Those Odd Future cats are Sucker Emcees!! All swag and no talent means I'll be banging Tyler, Frank, and Earl's moms in 18 months for a knock off Coach bags when them cat's are broke and have faded into the crowd dipshits they came from.
